Book Captain of the Steppe

Download or read book Captain of the Steppe written by Oleg Pavlov and published by Goodman Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was easy to fall into Karabas, as easy as falling down a hole, but it was hard, to put it bluntly, to get out again. Never mind the zeks, even the soldiers were exiled ...' Deep in the desolate steppe, Captain Khabarov waits out his service at a camp where the news arrives in bundles of last year's papers and rations turn up rotting in their trucks. The captain hopes for nothing more from life than a meagre pension and a state-owned flat. Until, one Spring, he decides to plant a field of potatoes to feed his half-starved men ...This blackly comic novel shows the unsettling consequences of thinking for yourself under the Soviet system. Oleg Pavlov's first novel, published when he was only 24, Captain of the Steppe was immediately praised for its chilling but humane and hilarious depiction of the Soviet Empire's last years. The first in a trilogy, this novel already confirms Pavlov as a worthy successor to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

Jake Striker felt he needed to return to Mongolia to tell his in-laws how their daughter died. His wife, Chandaa, was killed by a drunk driver who ran a red light. The 911 Porsche was broadsided and his wife died instantly at an intersection in Beverly Hills. She had been with him when he finally located the mysterious Chang Jai Lamasery, high on Mt. Bayaskhulangtu. They had been searching for a child that was born at the exact instant the ancient Chang Lai Lama died. The Lamas believed the child was the reincarnation of their revered Grand Lama and were returning him to his rightful home. The parents of the child saw it as kidnapping. Chandaa’s parents live far out on the rolling steppes, where only personal communication is possible. Jake is tall, six feet, three inches, handsome with light brown hair and storm gray eyes. He had originally been hired by the parents to locate their child. Now he is back in Mongolia, comforting grieving in-laws. Chanda’s sister, Mei, a stunningly beautiful Mongolian woman, with Chinese ancestors, is with Jake in her parent’s ger when Lama Namsray arrives and tells Jake that the Grand Regent is in need of his services. Contacting the Grand Regent will require an arduous trek by horseback up into the sacred mountains, where only a privileged few are permitted. A steppe soldier is traveling with Lama Namsray, to protect him; armed with an AK47. Jake is a policeman turned lawyer and has the ear of the Grand Regent. One of the young men who was born in the mysterious valley has gone rogue and become a drug dealer and murderer in Southern California. He needs to be stopped and the Grand Regent is about to give Jake the assignment. Mei, who is twenty-five, with almond eyes and raven hair that hangs to her waist, informs Jake and Lama Namsray that she is going with them. The Lama tells her that will be impossible, outsiders are not allowed into the secret Lamasery. She informs him, “I’m going.” Lama Namsray, the second most powerful lama in the sacred dzong, explains that the Grand Regent would never permit it. Mei says, “I know about the gold mine, I know about the child Grand Lama and I know about the secret entrance into the valley. I’m going.” Jake sides with Mei and she accompanies him on the dangerous journey into the mountains. She also accompanies him to Southern California where they do battle with the drug lord and his thugs. Events become so dangerous they have to call upon the ancient Order of the Tu Tung. A mysterious Lamasery, a handsome lawyer, a beautiful Mongolian woman and a clandestine order of assassins, wrapped tightly together with dragon-emblazoned fabric from the Great Silk Road.

The sparkling humor of the five “Tales of Belkin” contrasts with a dark fable of gambling and obsessive greed in “The Queen of Spades” and the masterful historical novella, “The Captain’s Daughter,” a story of love and betrayal set during a rebellion in the time of Catherine the Great. Book excerpt: Set during the Pugachov rebellion against Catherine the Great, The Captain's Daughter was Pushkin's only completed novel and remains one of his most popular works. The inexperienced and impetuous young nobleman Pyotr Grinyev is sent on military service to a remote fortress, where he falls in love with Masha, Captain Mironov's daughter - but then the ruthless Cossack Pugachov lays siege to the stronghold, setting in motion a tragic train of events. This volume also contains another work by Pushkin on the same theme, A History of Pugachov, which presents an impartial, meticulously researched history of the revolt, but was regarded in aristocratic circles as subversive on its publication. Together, these two works provide a fascinating insight into the character of the peasant who tried to overthrow an empress, written with the clarity and insight of Russia's greatest poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, Khlit the Cossack, the "wolf of the steppes." Journey with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes. Match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults. Rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains, skill, and a little luck. This four-volume set collects for the first time the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, an informative introduction by a popular author, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction. In this third volume, the wily old Cossack Khlit may have aged but he's lost none of his guile. He shepherds his dashing grandson Kirdy into one adventure after another, finally uniting with his allies Ayub and Demid in the climactic story White Falcon--out of print since the 1920s. Here too are the exploits of Ayub and Demid, risking all to safeguard the perilous Russian border from marauding Turks, Tatars, and even bloodthirsty Russian nobles.

Download or read book The Steppe written by Henry Biernacki and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through this timeless novel, Henry Biernacki carves images of the steppe (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan), an area often overlooked by travelers. Once Emperio changed his habitual routine, in Paris, of importing art, for one of exploration, he began to alter his life rather than accept destiny. Emperios appreciative outlook to experiences, without definite outcomes, arises in the novel, and his passion shapes his future. The descriptions become tangible, and the reader feels the sways of the train, touches of the wind, relishes each shared meal, and finally absorbs the steppe. Biernacki reveals the importance of the swiftly fading moments and those enduring lifetimes. The essence of traveling is not so much discovering the newness of a culture; moreover, and far superior, the discovery becomes a deeper side of the individual, who takes the step to learn.

Book excerpt: This classic of Russian literature plunges readers into a fascinating moment in military history as it follows an unforgettable cast of characters during the Pugachev Rebellion. “Time has done nothing to dull the excitement of the story.” —The New York Times Alexander Pushkin’s short novel is set during the reign of Catherine the Great, when the Cossacks rose up in rebellion against the Russian empress. Presented as the memoir of Pyotr Grinyov, a nobleman, The Captain’s Daughter tells how, as a feckless youth and fledgling officer, Grinyov was sent from St. Petersburg to serve in faraway southern Russia. Traveling to take up this new post, Grinyov loses his shirt gambling and then loses his way in a terrible snowstorm, only to be guided to safety by a mysterious peasant. With impulsive gratitude Grinyov hands over his fur coat to his savior, never mind the cold. Soon after he arrives at Fort Belogorsk, Grinyov falls in love with Masha, the beautiful young daughter of his captain. Then Pugachev, leader of the Cossack rebellion, surrounds the fort. Resistance, he has made it clear, will be met with death. At once a fairy tale and a thrilling historical novel, this singularly Russian work of the imagination is also a timeless, universal, and very winning story of how love and duty can summon pluck and luck to confront calamity.
