Book Captain of the Crew Classic Reprint

Download or read book Captain of the Crew Classic Reprint written by Ralph Henry Barbour and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain of the Crew In this, as in the two preceding volumes of the series - The half-back and For the Honor of the School - eu at tempt is made to show that athletics rightly indulged in is beneficial to the average boy and is an aid rather than a detriment to study. In it, too, as in the previous books, a plea is made for honesty and simplicity in sports. There is a tendency in this country to-day to give too great an importance to athletics - to take it much too seriously and it is this tendency that should be guarded against, especially among school and college youths. When ath letica ceases to be a pleasure and becomes a pursuit it should no longer have a place in school or college life. Book The Voyages of Captain Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Voyages of Captain Scott Classic Reprint written by Charles Turley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voyages of Captain Scott On the night of my original meeting with Scott he was but lately home from his first adventure into the Antarctic and my chief recollection of the occasion is that having found the entrancing man I was unable to leave him. In vain he escorted me through the streets of London to my home, for when he had said good-night I then escorted him to his, and so it went on I know not for how long through the small hours. Our talk was largely a comparison of the life of action (which he pooh-poohed) with the loathly life of those who sit at home (which I scorned); but I also remember that he assured me he was of Scots extraction. As the subject never seems to have been resumed between us, I afterwards wondered whether I had drawn this from him with a promise that, if his reply was satisfactory, I would let him go to bed. However, the family traditions (they are nothing more) do bring him from across the border. According to them his great-great-grandfather was the Scott of Brownhead whose estates were sequestered after the '45. His dwelling was razed to the ground and he fled with his wife, to whom after some grim privations a son was born in a fisherman's hut on September 14,1975. Book The Adventures of Captain Horn Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Adventures of Captain Horn Classic Reprint written by Frank Richard Stockton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Captain Horn The sea had become almost quiet, and there was time enough to do everything orderly and properly, and in less than three hours after the vessel had been struck, the two boats, containing all the crew and the passengers, besides a goodly quantity of provisions and water, and such valuables, clothing, rugs, and wraps as room could be found for, were pulling away from the wreck. The Captain, who, with his passengers, was in the larger boat, was aware that he was OH the coast of Peru, but that was all he certainly knew of his position. The storm had struck the ship in the morning before he had taken his daily observation, and his room, which was on deck, had been carried away and in it every nautical instrument on board. He did not believe that the storm had taken him far out of his course, but of this he could not be sure; all that he knew with certainty was that to the eastward lay the land, and eastward, therefore, they pulled, a little compass attached to the Captain's watch guard being their only guide. For the rest of that day and that night and the next day and the next night, the two boats moved eastward, the people on board suffering but little inconvenience, except from the labor of continuous rowing, at which everybody, excepting the two ladies, took part, even Ralph Markham being willing to show how much of a man he could be with an car in his hand. Book Adventures of Captain Kettle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Adventures of Captain Kettle Classic Reprint written by Cutcliffe Hyne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of Captain Kettle But Captain Kettle took the situation differently. The sight Of the torpedo-catcher stiffened all the doubt and limpness out of his composition; his eye brightened and his lips grew stiff; the scheming to escape acted on him like a tonic; and when an hour later the Sultan of Borneo was steaming merrily down Channel at top speed through the same im penetrable fog, the little skipper whistled dance music on the upper bridge, and caught the notion for a most pleasing sonnet. That evening the crew came aft in a state Of mild mutiny, and Kettle attended to their needs with gusto. He prefaced his remarks by a slight exhibition of marksmanship. He cut away the vane which showed dimly on the fore-topmast truck with a single bullet, and then, after dexterously reloading his revolver, lounged over the white rail of the upper bridge with the weapon in his hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Margaret: A Romance She had been a week In coming from the P001 to the Start. In the week her crew had settled down from their last drunkenness. The smuts had been washed from the fife-rails; the ropes upon the pins had lost the London grime from the lay of the strands. Now, as the sun rose behind the combes, flooding the land with light, smiting the water with gold, the boy, standingfar aft, ran up her colours, and the boatswain', in his blue boat cloak, bending forward slightly, blowing his smouldering match, fired the sunrise gun, raising his linstock In salute. The sleepers stirred among their blankets; one or two, fully wakened, raised themselves upon their elbows. A block creaked as the peak lantern was hauled down. Then with a shrill wail the pipe sounded the long double call, slowly heightening to piercing sharpness, which bids all hands arise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Captains Room, Etc, Vol. 1 of 3 Perhaps the most eventful day in the story of which I have to tell, was that on which the veil of doubt and misery which had hung before the eyes of Lal Rydquist for three long years was partly lifted. It was so eventful, that I venture to relate what happened on that day first of all, even though it tells half the story at the very beginning. That we need not care much to consider, because, although it is the story of a great calamity long dreaded and happily averted, it is a story of sorrow borne bravely, of faith, loyalty, and courage. A story such as one loves to tell, because, in the world of fiction, at least, virtue should always triumph, and true hearts be rewarded. This book was released on 2006-02-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Paper Back Cover) Captain Otway Burns and his ship Snap Dragon explores the legends, facts, and misguided information of Captain Otway Burns' life. As a native son of southeastern North Carolina he was a merchant sea Captain, highly successful War of 1812 Privateer, noted businessman, and an inventive ship builder. Later in life Burns was a strong state legislator, but like most of his life, his service to his state and country was controversial. Myth and fact have merged since Captain Burns' death in 1850. Using fragments of information along with long forgotten documents, compiled with material gained from newly located direct descendents, this book attempts to capture a more accurate description of Captain Burns and his adventurous life. If you enjoy good stories of Tall Ship Naval battles, or are intrigued with local legends, this book is for you.
