Book Captain Christopher Newport

Download or read book Captain Christopher Newport written by Allen Bryant Nichols and published by Sea Venture LLC. This book was released on 2007 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this first full-length biography of Christopher Newport (1561-1617), Nichols portrays, in carefully research detail, the adventurous life on the high seas of the courageous sea captain who founded the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. As a young man, Newport sailed with Sir Francis Drake in the daring attack on the Spanish fleet at Cadiz and participated in England's defeat of the Spanish Armada. During the war with Spain, Newport seized fortunes of Spanish and Portuguese treasure in fierce sea battles in the West Indies as a privateer for Queen Elizabeth I. He led more attacks on Spanish shipping and settlements than any other English privateer. While leading his men aboard an enemy ship off the coast of Cuba, his right arm was 'strooken off', and Newport was referred to thereafter as, 'Christopher Newport of the one hand.' Admiral of Virginia, Newport led the fleet of colonists who established the first permanent English settlement in the New World. He chose the site for Jamestown, led the initial exploration for King James, and negotiated peacefully with Chief Powhatan's Indian tribes. Newport repeatedly rescued colonists from famine with four resupply voyages. When the 'Sea Venture' was shipwrecked on Bermuda during a hurricane, Newport organized 150 colonists to build two new vessels for their deliverance to Jamestown. In his later career, Newport led three long trading voyages to the Far East for the East India Company. He brought the first English ambassadors to Persia and India. His many voyages laid the foundations for the evolution of the British Empire. Captain Christopher Newport was an outstanding navigator, stern but compassionate sea captain, and legendary leader of men." -- Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: From Book's Foreword: It is our privilege to submit the Final Report of the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission, created by Act of Congress (Public Law 106-565) and signed into law by the President of the United States on December 23, 2000. Our report summarizes the extraordinary story of America's 400th Anniversary, an 18-month program of commemorative activities and events that afforded Americans the opportunity to honor their nation's beginning at Jamestown and reflect upon the vision and values that define the world's oldest republic. The anniversary program was a resounding success. We wish to express our appreciation to the President and the Congress, and ultimately the American People, for the vigorous support we received throughout the course and planning and executing the commemorative program. We are especially grateful for the singular honor of serving the Commission. The 400th anniversary commemoration produced stunning new discoveries, significant new scholarship, impressive new interpretive facilities, and illuminating new educational initiatives that will continue to enhance our understanding of the remarkably consequential convergence of man and nature in the Chesapeake region four centuries ago. Anniversary-related programs and activities increased public awareness of the foundational importance of the Jamestown settlement and Virginia colony of our nation's history.

The book charts the arrival of the first Americans through Alaska, millennia before the coming of the Norsemen, or of Cabot, Columbus and Raleigh. It tells of the sixteenth century incursions by the Spanish, French and English, their interaction with the American Indians, and describes the early settlements, their culture, activities and trade. The author traces the rise to dominance of the British settlers, and the establishment of the whole of east America within the British Empire. The book closes with an account of the war with the British and of Washington's final triumph.

Book England and the Discovery of America 1481 1620

Download or read book England and the Discovery of America 1481 1620 written by David B. Quinn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, England and the Discovery of America places the early explorations of the English in North America in the broad context of 15th and 16th century history. Marshalling evidence that cannot be pushed aside and sifting a mass of fascinating detail (including problems of cartography and the Vinland Map controversy), Professor Quinn presents circumstantial indications pointing to 1481 as the date or the discovery of America by Bristol voyagers – fishermen seeking new sources of cod, and merchant sailors with maps carrying promise of unexploited Atlantic islands. Whereas England did little to follow up her early lead, Quinn demonstrates that English initiatives from the 1580s onward, though slow, were of great importance. He brings to life the men involved in a variety of rash and heroic experiments in colonization and casts new light on their fates. He makes it clear that it was this very profusion of trial and error and trail again, as well as the conviction that settlement in temperate latitudes in North America could be effective if tenaciously enough sought, that enabled the English to strike and maintain routes in their new American world. This book will be of interest to students of English history, American history, colonial history and naval history.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of every major war and battle fought in the Americas, this revised edition of the award-winning Wars of the Americas offers up-to-date scholarship on the conflicts that have shaped a hemisphere. When it was first published in 1998, Wars of the Americas: A Chronology of Armed Conflict in the Western Hemisphere was the only major reference focused exclusively on warfare in all its forms in North, Central, and South America over the past five centuries. Now this acclaimed resource returns in a dramatically expanded new edition. For its second edition, Wars of the Americas has been doubled in size to two full volumes: the first covers all wars and major battles from the earliest Spanish conquests through the 18th-century colonial rivalries that gripped the hemisphere. The second volume covers covers the American Revolutionary War and all subsequent conflicts up to the present. In addition to exhaustive updating throughout and a deeper focus on the historical context of each conflict, the new edition includes new coverage of the present-day drug cartel wars, international terrorism, and the ever-evolving relationships between the United States and the nations of Latin America.
