Book Capstone Concept for Joint Operations Version 2 0

Download or read book Capstone Concept for Joint Operations Version 2 0 written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Capstone Concept for Joint Operations (CCJO) is the overarching concept of the family of joint concepts that guides the development of future joint capabilities. Its purpose is to lead force development and employment primarily by providing a broad description of how the future joint force will operate. Service concepts and subordinate joint operating, functional, and integrating concepts will expand on the CCJO solution. Interagency and multinational partners may use it to assess potential integration requirements and opportunities. The CCJO broadly describes how future joint forces are expected to operate across the range of military operations in 2012-2025 in support of strategic objectives. It applies to operations around the globe conducted unilaterally or in conjunction with multinational military partners and other government and nongovernment agencies. It envisions military operations conducted within a national strategy that incorporates all instruments of national power. This concept is applicable to combatant commands, the Military Services, Defense agencies, and the Joint Staff for concept development and experimentation. The CCJO briefly describes the environment and military problem expected to exist in 2012-2025 (from just outside the future years defense program to 20 years in the future). It proposes a solution to meet challenges across the range of military operations and describes key characteristics of the future joint force. This concept concludes by presenting risks and implications associated with this concept.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Capstone Concept for Joint Operations describes in broad terms my vision for how the joint force circa 2016-2028 will operate in response to a wide variety of security challenges. It proposes that future joint force commanders will combine and subsequently adapt some combination of four basic categories of military activity -- combat, security, engagement, and relief and reconstruction -- in accordance with the unique requirements of each operational situation. The concept is informed by current strategic guidance, but because it looks to the future, it is intended to be adaptable, as it must be, to changes in that guidance.

Book excerpt: The fundamental purpose of military power is to deter or wage war in support of national policy. In these capacities, military power is a coercive instrument, designed to achieve by force or the threat of force what other means cannot. While it may be employed in more benign ways for a variety of important purposes across a wide range of situations, these other uses should not be allowed to imperil its ultimate ability to wage war.

Book Assessing the Adequacy of Coverage of Joint Command and Control in the Capstone Concept for Joint Operations

Download or read book Assessing the Adequacy of Coverage of Joint Command and Control in the Capstone Concept for Joint Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Staff, J7 Joint Experimentation, Transformation, and Concepts Division asked the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) Joint Advanced Warfighting Program (JAWP) to evaluate how adequately the Capstone Concept for Joint Operations (CCJO) covers joint command and control (JC2). The CCJO heads the family of joint operations concepts (JOpsC) that describe how joint forces are expected to operate across the range of military operations in 2012-2025. Its purpose is to lead force development and employment primarily by providing a broad description of how the future joint force will operate. The IDA study team first evaluated the CCJO itself relative to JC2. The team then reviewed current doctrine, operations, planning, and activities with JC2 content -- the Universal Joint Task List (UJTL), Multi-Service Force Deployment (MSFD) Scenarios, wargames, and experiments -- for possible insight that might inform the next revision of the CCJO. These sources proved generally unhelpful. The study team then examined advanced theoretical work, especially the OSD Command and Control Research Program (CCRP), for insight. This proved very useful and provided a theoretical framework of possible future JC2. Next the team reviewed concepts subordinate to the CCJO that have JC2 content, particularly the C2 functional and integrating concepts. Both were consistent with the CCRP framework and were conceptually ahead of the CCJO. Finally, the team examined selected Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency C2 work and activities at JFCOM. Both reinforced the correctness of the direction reflected in the CCRP and the subordinate JC2 concepts. In answering four specific sponsor-directed questions related to doctrinal command structures, capability gaps, treatment of C2 in the CCJO, and subordinate C2 concepts, the study team reached four conclusions indicating that greater clarity regarding future JC2 is needed in the CCJO.

Book Military Statecraft and the Rise of Shaping in World Politics

Download or read book Military Statecraft and the Rise of Shaping in World Politics written by Kyle J. Wolfley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Andrew F. Krepinevich Writing Award A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title Selected for the Irregular Warfare Initiative’s Inaugural Reading List (2022) In today’s complex international environment, how do the United States, China, and Russia manage the return of great power competition as well as the persistent threat of violent non-state actors? This book explores "shaping": the use of military power to construct a more favorable environment by influencing the characteristics of other militaries, altering the relationships between them, or managing the behavior of allies. As opposed to traditional strategies of warfighting or coercion, shaping relies less on threats, demonstrations, and uses of violence and more on attraction, persuasion, and legitimacy. Because shaping relies more on soft power than on hard power, this approach contradicts the conventional wisdom of the purpose militaries serve. Kyle J. Wolfley explores the emergence of shaping in classical strategy and its increased frequency following the end of the Cold War when threats and allies became more ambiguous. He illustrates the four logics of shaping—attraction, socialization, delegation, and assurance—through five case studies of recent major military exercise programs led by the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, and Russia. Moreover, the author reveals through sentiment analysis and statistics of over one thousand multinational exercises from 1980 to 2016 how major powers reacted to a complex international environment by expanding the number and scope of shaping exercises. Illuminating an understudied but surprisingly common tool of military statecraft, this book offers a fresh understanding of military power in today's competitive international system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the United States is involved in two ongoing wars, faces a significant international terrorist threat, and is witnessing an escalation of international resistance to its leadership of the global world order. Looking out to 2025, many see the potential for a prolonged period of instability as a result of competing economic models, demographics, the rise of new international actors and the resurgence old ones, climate change, and the scarcity of resources. The range of stability challenges will stretch the capabilities of any military force structure and require innovative thinking on the part of policymakers and military professionals alike on the appropriate development and use of the military element of power. In this anthology, 16 students of the U.S. Army War College Class of 2008 offer their perspectives on the use of military power across the spectrum of conflict in the 21st century, short of or following general war, and provide insights into the necessary force structure, policy, strategy, and doctrinal approaches for future success. Beyond a focus on operations short of general war, these writings share in common a worthwhile idea or set of ideas that can materially contribute to how the U.S. military can best conduct full spectrum operations. Collectively, these essays reveal the innovative thinking and diversity and depth of thought of the U.S. and foreign military and civilian agency personnel that comprise each student body at the U.S. Army War College as they prepare themselves to become senior leaders and fulfill their roles in their militaries or agencies. This resource offers 16 students of the U.S. Army War College Class of 2008 perspectives and forecasts for the use of military power through year 2025. Scholars and policymakers, alike, may find these essays beneficial for long-term strategy planning. Book Toward a Risk Management Defense Strategy

Download or read book Toward a Risk Management Defense Strategy written by Nathan Freier and published by Strategic Studies Institute. This book was released on 2009 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers key considerations for DoD as it works through the on-going defense review. The author outlines eight principles for a risk management defense strategy. He argues that these principles provide "measures of merit" for evaluating the new administration's defense choices. This monograph builds on two previous works-- Known unknowns: unconventional "strategic shocks" in defense strategy development and The new balance: limited armed stabilization and the future of U.S. landpower. Combined, these three works offer key insights on the most appropriate DoD responses to increasingly "unconventional" defense and national security conditions. This work in particular provides DoD leaders food for thought, as they balance mounting defense demands and declining defense resources.

Book Understanding Naval Warfare

Download or read book Understanding Naval Warfare written by Ian Speller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new and updated edition of Understanding Naval Warfare offers the reader an accessible introduction to the study of modern naval warfare, providing a thorough grounding in the vocabulary, concepts, issues, and debates, set within the context of relevant history. Navies operate in an environment that most people do not understand and that many avoid. They are equipped with a bewildering range of ships, craft and other vessels and types of equipment, the purpose of which is often unclear. Writings on naval warfare are usually replete with references to esoteric concepts explained in specialist language than can serve as a barrier to understanding. The objective of this book, therefore, is to cut through the obscure and the arcane to offer a clear, coherent and accessible guide to the key features of naval warfare which will equip the reader with the knowledge and understanding necessary for a sophisticated engagement with the subject. This second edition is divided into two key parts. The first focuses on concepts of naval warfare and introduces readers to the ideas associated with the theory and practice of naval operations. It also includes a new chapter in which the history of the last century of naval warfare is explored in order to illustrate the key concepts. The second part focuses on the conduct of war at sea and on peacetime roles for contemporary navies. This latter section concludes with a chapter that looks ahead to the likely future of naval warfare. This textbook will be essential reading for students of naval warfare, sea power and maritime security, and highly recommended for those studying military history, strategic studies and security studies in general.

Book AirLandBattle21

Download or read book AirLandBattle21 written by Ellwood P. Hinman IV and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changed strategic landscape of the 21st century has driven a shift to more flexible, adaptable capabilities across the spectrum of conflict. Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have demonstrated the validity of team warfare between air and land forces during open hostilities with an enemy. The time has come for innovative counter-air and counter-land concepts focused on medium- to large-scale conventional combat operations that will merge air and ground forces even more effectively into a single potent fighting force. Such is the focus of AirLandBattle21. A basic assumption in this study is that, during major combat operations, a relevant number of Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) will conduct distributed operations in a non-linear, non-contiguous and geographically separated fashion. The study introduces a flexible counter-air framework that allows for the most efficient use of limited air assets and advocates only the necessary levels of air control in different areas across the theatre. The study also offers alternative views of strategic attack and explores the critical role tactical airlift will play in employing and sustaining the brigade combat team.
