Download or read book Capitalizing on New Needs and New Opportunities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-02-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses a topic of recognized policy concern. To capture the benefits of substantial U.S. investments in biomedical R&D, parallel investments in a wide range of seemingly unrelated disciplines are also required. This report summarizes a major conference that reviewed our nation's R&D support for biotechnology and information technologies. The volume includes newly commissioned research and makes recommendations and findings concerning the important relationship between information technologies and biotechnology. It emphasizes the fall off in R&D investments needed to sustain the growth of the U.S. economy and to capitalize on the growing investment in biomedicine. It also encourages greater support for inter-disciplinary training to support new areas such as bioinformatics and urges more emphasis on and support for multi-disciplinary research centers.

This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States is currently capitalizing on its investment in science and technology effectively, there remains much room for improvement. This volume identifies the ingredients for success in capitalizing on such investments to produce national benefits, assesses current U.S. performance, and identifies future challenges. The book cites specific examples and examines several cross-cutting issues. It explores the possibility that the national research portfolio is losing diversity as a result of less long-term research in critical fields such as networking and materials. It also examines the implications of imbalances in the supply of and demand for science and engineering talent in emerging interdisciplinary fields such as bioinformatics.

Download or read book Experience capitalization from theory to practice written by CTA and published by CTA. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the project’s last activities was to organise a meeting with those who took an active role as facilitators, and who helped guide the series of capitalization processes which the project supported in different parts of the world. This was planned to complement the online discussions that had been going on between them – and together discuss the conditions, requirements or the factors underpinning an effective facilitation process. The meeting helpedvalidate many of the issues identified during the preparation, implementation and evaluation of the different capitalization processes in which manypersons were involved. It also helped identify what is needed now to support the processes already initiated and to be completed, or to start new initiatives. The narratives included in this publication served as inputs for the discussions at the meeting. Written by those who were actively and directly involved in the different steps of the project, they show the main issues they faced during the training workshops and also in the field, and the main lessons they drew as participants, facilitators or as experience capitalization “champions”. Although based on concrete cases, the fears, observations or ideas included in each one of these articles will be easily recognised by those playing a similar role. They are therefore a good complement to the facilitator’s guidebook recently published by CTA.

Download or read book Facilitating experience capitalization written by Eggens, Laura and published by CTA. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since April 2016, CTA implemented the “Capitalizing on Experiences for Greater Impact in Rural Development” project – working together with FAO and IICA, and with the financial support of IFAD. During these three years, this project worked with many organizations in different parts of the world. Its purpose was to empower these organizations with the tools and the skills needed to identify practices which can be brought to scale, to describe and analyze them in detail, and to share the lessons they teach. More specifically, this project aimed to facilitate the adoption of an experience capitalization process in rural development initiatives. This guidebook is meant to help facilitators. It builds on the many interesting resources which are already available, but it builds more specifically on the experience accumulated by the project, and on the lessons and insights drawn by all those who were involved in it – both as facilitators and as participants. It is their work which has shown what works and what can be presented as a recommendation that others can follow and adapt.

Download or read book International Handbook on Industrial Policy written by Patrizio Bianchi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and much-needed Handbook reconsiders an old topic from a fresh perspective, raising a number of new, interesting and worthwhile issues in the wake of ten years of globalization. This comprehensive analysis illustrates that old-style industrial policies whereby the government directly intervened in markets, and was often the producer itself, are no longer relevant. Structural changes occurring in economies - summarized in the term 'globalization' - are triggering the definition and implementation of new industrial policies. The contributors, leading experts in their field, unite to evaluate this shift of over a decade ago. Employing various empirical and methodological approaches with a strong theoretical underpinning, this world-wide study of the state-of-the-art of industrial policy issues is an invaluable reference tool. It has been enthusiastically received by a wide-ranging audience including scholars, researchers and policy makers with an interest in industrial economics and policy, business studies and policies for growth, competitiveness and development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cases captured in this booklet show the steps taken in many of these projects and organisations to support and ensure the adoption of an experience capitalization approach. Working together with their colleagues, those who joined the CTA workshops have become active “champions”: organising their own training sessions, they shared information in different ways, and have shown how others can benefit from the capitalization process. They have helped to create the conditions for experience capitalization to be more widely adopted by their organisations. As a result, there are many new capitalization processes going on, and many more will be taking place in the future – effectively underpinning more accountable and efficient projects in the future and greater progress in rural development.
Download or read book The Capitalization of Knowledge written by Riccardo Viale and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an authoritative confirmation of the critical role that knowledge plays in economic transformation. It is an indispensable roadmap for new research programmes and a guidepost for policy makers around the world. Calestous Juma, Harvard Kennedy School, US How to use and capitalize knowledge for the benefit of society has become even more urgent in the present financial and economic crisis. This book embraces the tensions inherent in the complex governance of research and innovation. It argues for strategies appropriate to the behaviour of complex adaptive systems in an evolutionary mode, thereby highlighting in a timely manner the necessary fit between organizational forms and the epistemological structure of knowledge in the overall context of a fertile investment climate. Helga Nowotny, European Research Council, WWTF Vienna Science and Technology Fund, Austria In the 21st century, economic and social development depends increasingly on knowledge rather than labour and capital. This book examines how knowledge is exploited through the development of innovations that yield economic and other benefits. The authors, who include leading figures from the field of innovation studies, look in particular at the growing links between universities, government and industry and the evolving triple helix relationship as they attempt to develop more effective means for capitalizing on knowledge. The book will be of considerable interest to policy-makers and to senior managers in industry and universities as well as to innovation scholars. Ben Martin, University of Sussex, UK In recent years, university industry government interactions have come to the forefront as a method of promoting economic growth in increasingly knowledge-based societies. This ground-breaking new volume evaluates the capacity of the triple helix model to represent the recent evolution of local and national systems of innovation. It analyses both the success of the triple helix as a descriptive and empirical model within internationally competitive technology regions as well as its potential as a prescriptive hypothesis for regional or national systems that wish to expand their innovation processes and industrial development. In addition, it examines the legal, economic, administrative, political and cognitive dimensions employed to configure and study, in practical terms, the series of phenomena contained in the triple helix category. This book will have widespread appeal amongst students and scholars of economics, sociology and business administration who specialise in entrepreneurship and innovation. Policy-makers involved in innovation, industrial development and education as well as private firms and institutional agencies will also find the volume of interest.
