Robinson demuestra cómo la movilidad de capital le ha permitido a éste reorganizar los procesos productivos a lo ancho del mundo de acuerdo con una amplia gama de consideraciones que permiten la maximización de las oportunidades para la ganancia. Como resultado, los sistemas productivos anteriormente nacionales han sido fragmentados e integrados externamente en nuevos circuitos globalizados de acumulación. Al mismo tiempo esta descentralización y fragmentación de la producción da lugar a la concentración y la centralización del mando y control de la economía global en manos de capital transnacional. Esta nueva organización de la economía mundial encuentra su contraparte en el surgimiento de redes de un estado transnacional que permite a la élite transnacional coordinar y extender su radio de acción e imponer nuevas relaciones de dominación sobre las clases populares. La hegemonía en el siglo XXI no será ejercida por un Estado-nación determinado sino por esta nueva clase dominante global por medio de la maquinaria del estado transnacional. Pero el nuevo sistema de capitalismo global está impregnado de contradicciones explosivas entre ellas, la creciente brecha entre los ricos y los pobres y el deterioro ecológico. El futuro será testigo de continuos conflictos y disputas por el control entre el nuevo grupo dominante transnacional y las filas cada vez más numerosas de los desposeídos y marginados.
