Book excerpt: Capital Market Reform in Asia is a compilation of selected papers that captures the essence of the issues and challenges that contributed to capital market reform in the Asian region. The central theme of this volume is to chart the progress of capital market development in Asia after the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, to understand the complex process of capital market deepening in emerging market economies, and to acknowledge that in the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2007-2009, robust Asian capital markets are crucial for mobilizing domestic savings for investments in Asia, both nationally and regionally. The book provides new insights into several important themes in capital market reforms in asia and is written by Asian financial policymakers, practitioners, scholars and experts invited by the organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI).

Book Asian Capital Market Development and Integration

Download or read book Asian Capital Market Development and Integration written by Asian Development Bank and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fiscal crisis in Europe continues to cast a shadow on the global economic outlook, and the securities issued by the United States and European nations are losing their status as traditional safe assets and reserve value. As a result, investors and governments are looking to diversify their investment portfolio with emerging markets, particularly Asian bonds. Such renewed interest has led to excessive capital inflows, making the region increasingly vulnerable to external shocks. However, on the other hand, it leads to abundant liquidity in the capital markets, which reduces financing costs and expands investment opportunities. This book analyses this dilemma and proposes that development of local bond markets and achieving greater market depth and interconnectedness is the best bet to prevent the reoccurrence of a currency crisis like 1997. It thus, assesses the progress achieved thus far in capital market integration in Asia, and compares it with its global peers. The study also assesses the degree to which volatility in equity and bond market returns, driven by financial turmoil originating at both the regional and global levels, spills over into emerging Asia domestic equity and bond markets. The results of this analysis indicate that such spill-over significantly impacts both domestic equity and bond markets in the region. This finding suggests that on-going regional capital market integration initiatives should take into account the risk of contagion that regional financial integration presents, and introduce measures for mitigating such risk as a means of ensuring financial stability in the region.

This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Asian Development Bank Institute Although emerging economies as a group performed well during the global recession, weathering the recession better than advanced economies, there were sharp differences among them and across regions. The emerging economies of Asia had the most favorable outcomes, surviving the ravages of the global financial crisis with relatively modest declines in growth rates in most cases. China and India maintained strong growth during the crisis and played an important role in facilitating global economic recovery. In this informative volume, the second in a series on emerging markets, editors Masahiro Kawai and Eswar Prasad and the contributors analyze the major domestic macroeconomic and financial policy issues that could limit the growth potential of Asian emerging markets, such as rising inflation and surging capital inflows, with the accompanying risks of asset and credit market bubbles and of rapid currency appreciation. The book examines strategies to promote financial stability, including reforms for financial market development and macroprudential supervision and regulation.

Book Financial Big Bang in Asia

Download or read book Financial Big Bang in Asia written by Masayoshi Tsurumi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. The east Asian economies enjoyed "miraculous" economic growth in the 1990s, and were expected to prosper into the 21st century. However, this was not to be, there was a financial crash in the summer of 1997. The crisis spread from Thailand to the ASEAN economies, and then by the autumn it had reached the northeast Asian economies. Discussions on the causes of the crisis cover a wide variety of possible culprits: hedge funds, foreign exchange policy, dependence on foreign capital, bubble economies, corporate governance, underdeveloped financial markets, and so on. This book focuses on the Asian financial crisi from the long-term perspective of development of financial reform in Asia. The purpose of this book is to analyze and assess the financial crisis in the different Asian economies by comparing them from the point of view of long-run financial system reform, and to consider the future prospects of financial reform in Asia.

Book Implications of the Global Financial Crisis for Financial Reform and Regulation in Asia

Download or read book Implications of the Global Financial Crisis for Financial Reform and Regulation in Asia written by Masahiro Kawai and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Filled with fresh observations from the global financial crisis, this book provides a blueprint for making Asia's financial systems safe. With contributions from experts in several countries, it is both comprehensive and rigorous. It will be invaluable to policy makers and students of finance everywhere, but its unique Asian perspective provides special insight into the systems that managed to ride out the global crisis but absent further reform might set the stage for another one. The book's analysis and recommendations deserve urgent policy attention.' Peter Petri, Brandeis University, US 'What are the lessons of the global financial crisis of 20072009 for Asia? This is a key issue for Asia today. On one hand, some observers argue that following the Asian financial crisis in 199798, most Asian developing countries built up strong mechanisms to guarantee financial stability. But the recent financial shocks across America and Europe show that even the best financial systems have key weaknesses. This book is a valuable guide for Asian financial policy-makers of the road ahead.' Peter McCawley, Australian National University In light of the experience of the global financial crisis, this book develops concrete recommendations for financial sector reform and regulation in Asian economies aimed at preventing the recurrence of systemic financial crises, improving the ability to manage and resolve crises, managing capital flows, and promoting the development of Asian bond markets. The focus of the book is on longer-term structural measures. It explores areas such as the scope for regional monitoring and cooperation; deepening and integration of Asian bond and money markets; liberalization/regulation of capital flows; issues related to macroprudential oversight, regulatory structure and cooperation; as well as role of state intervention in crisis resolution in the financial sector. The need for and impacts of regulations on innovative financial products and specific investor groups such as hedge funds; ways to reduce systemic risk of pro-cyclicality of regulation; and ways to improve the infrastructure and regulatory environment for local currency bond markets, are also examined in depth. The book will appeal to public and private finance experts, policy and decisions makers in governments and banks, think-tanks, and students in graduate courses related to financial and economic development.

Book The Regulation of International Financial Markets

Download or read book The Regulation of International Financial Markets written by Rainer Grote and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International financial relations have become increasingly important for the development of global and national economies. At present these relations are primarily governed by market forces, with little regulatory interference at the international level. In the light of numerous financial crises, this abstinence must be seriously questioned. Starting with an analysis of the regulatory problems at the international level, with only minimal powers entrusted to international organisations, this book develops various possibilities for reform. On the basis of an historical analysis, the book first adopts a comparative approach to national attempts to regulate international financial markets, then outlines the potential of relevant institutions and finally develops a policy perspective. It seeks to provide a framework for analysing options for the regulation of international financial markets from a public international law and comparative law perspective.
