Book excerpt: This volume is the first general social and economic history of the Western Cape of South Africa. Until recently, this region had been largely neglected by historians because it does not occupy a central place in the national political economy. Wilmot G. James and Mary Simons argue that a great deal about modern South Africa has been shaped by the distinctive society and economy of the Western Cape. Its history also reveals striking parallels and contrasts with other regions of the African continent. The Western Cape is the only region of South Africa to have experienced slavery. In this sense, the Western Cape has historical traditions more akin to colonial slave societies of the Americas than to those of the rest of Africa. Moreover, in contrast to the rest of South Africa, a proletariat emerged in the Western Cape early in its history, at the start of the eighteenth century. There developed a much more stable and enduring system of class and labor relations. In the twentieth century, these became closely enmeshed with race and status. Racial paternalism and the close correlation between class, caste, and color have their historical roots in the Western Cape. The book is arranged thematically and explores the social and economic consequences of slavery and emancipation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Issues of economy and labor, such as economic underdevelopment in the Western Cape, the labor market, and trade-union organization in the twentieth century are examined. The authors also treat the role of the state in shaping Western Cape society. Class, Caste, and Color is not only a groundbreaking work in the study of South Africa, but provides an agenda for future researchers. It will be essential reading for historians, economists, and Africa area specialists.

Book excerpt: "The City of Cape Town is heading for disaster and is already in deep crisis if one cares to look close enough. The recent proliferation of public construction, public squares and public housing along the N2 towards the airport is little more than a mirage compared with the direction of more underlying trends. Cape Town's grim future is born out of the confluence of the globalised economic and ecological collapse that is fast becoming the defining feature of the twenty-first century. It is manifested most starkly in the dire situation that faces the majority of the city's residents, who are excluded from the formal economy and must rely on substandard public services and their own makeshift shelters. The scenario is serious enough to draw everyone's attention but should be set against the broader issues of long-term economic resilience and environmental sustainability to achieve a low-carbon society - so we have our work cut out for us. The purpose of this volume is to demystify these challenges and present readers with a creative portfolio of thinking, practice and strong vision to show that we can find alternatives - and, moreover, that these alternatives are already emerging in (marginal) sections of the state, civil society and the business sectors."--Introduction.

Book Regional Metamorphism of Ore Deposits and Genetic Implications

Download or read book Regional Metamorphism of Ore Deposits and Genetic Implications written by Paul G. Spry and published by VSP. This book was released on 1990-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unifying theme to the papers in this volume is that they deal with economic accumulations of sulfide minerals which, together with their host rocks, have been affected to varying degrees by regional metamorphism. The principle sulfide deposit types discussed are stratabound ZnCuPbAgBa deposits in regionally metamorphosed terranes which occur in a diverse variety of host lithologies. In addition other interesting deposit types are discussed and examples are presented from various parts of the world. The topics treated in this volume are: the interaction of sulfide minerals with their host rocks during regional metamorphism; the quantitative interpretation of P-T-time histories of regional metamorphism in which both sulfide and silicate phase relations must be considered together in order to meaningfully interpret the metamorphic history; the question of how to identify progenitors of rocks modified by tectonic and metamorphic processes and the implications of these studies; developing future exploration strategies for massive sulfide deposits in meatmorphic terranes.
