Book Capacity Characterization of a MIMO OFDM Wireless Channel with BLAST Implementation

Download or read book Capacity Characterization of a MIMO OFDM Wireless Channel with BLAST Implementation written by Jaimal Soni and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the data rates and performance of current telecommunications technologies reach their limits, MIMO offers promising results allowing for higher spectral efficiencies (or capacities) through the use of multiple element antennas (MEAs). Conventional testing methods, however, cannot be used for multi-antenna systems due to the co-dependence of antenna and RF effects, and baseband hardware and software design. This dissertation specifies a novel MIMO-OFDM, BLAST-based testing design using a hybrid FPGA/DSP development platform from Lyrtech. The design allows for rapid implementation and a consistent indication of the channel impulse response. In addition, a multipath environment is further created to mimic a realistic high scattering scenario. A study of MIMO system capacity is performed along with measurements of an actual over-the-air (OTA) channel. Observations about capacity and the effect of MEA antenna separations are then drawn and conclusions made as to the overall ability to effectively test MIMO systems. The platform used is the result of efforts from several individuals within UW's CST group. My contributions and research are documented in this dissertation.

Download or read book Implementation and Analysis of OFDM and CDMA Based MIMO V BLAST for MUD Using ZF and MMSE written by Kishor G. Maradia and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of future wireless communication is to provide high quality wireless multimedia services so that data with high rate can be transmitted reliably. Recent information on theoretic research has shown that Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems can achieve enormous spectral efficiency. The use of multiple antennas allows an independent channel to be created in the space and is the most interesting and promising wireless research area. The use of multiple antennas at both ends of a wireless link holds the potential to drastically improve the spectral efficiency and link reliability in future wireless communications systems. It seems to be a promising candidate for the next generation. In this paper, two techniques for the next 4G system -- OFDM and CDMA -- are compared with respect to their error performance in multiuser environment. The studies of both transmission techniques are performed for MIMO architecture. This paper provides a comparison of OFDM and CDMA-based MIMO technique.

This book will target professionals & researchers working in the fields of Wireless Communications and Networking, Resource Allocation and Transmissions. Advanced-level students in electrical engineering and computer science will also find this book useful as a secondary textbook.

Book MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications

Download or read book MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications written by George Tsoulos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For broadband communications, it was frequency division multiplexing. For optical communications, it was wavelength division multiplexing. Then, for all types of networks it was code division. Breakthroughs in transmission speed were made possible by these developments, heralding next-generation networks of increasing capability in each case. The basic idea is the same: more channels equals higher throughput. For wireless communications, it is space-time coding using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology. Providing a complete treatment of MIMO under a single cover, MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications assembles coverage on all aspects of MIMO technology along with up-to-date information on key related issues. Contributors from leading academic and industrial institutions around the world share their expertise and lend the book a global perspective. They lead you gradually from basic to more advanced concepts, from propagation modeling and performance analysis to space-time codes, various systems, implementation options and limitations, practical system development considerations, field trials, and network planning issues. Linking theoretical analysis to practical issues, the book does not limit itself to any specific standardization or research/industrial initiatives. MIMO is the catalyst for the next revolution in wireless systems, and MIMO System Technology for Wireless Communications lays a thorough and complete foundation on which to build the next and future generations of wireless networks.

Book Signal Processing Channel Estimation and Link Adaptation in MIMO OFDM Systems

Download or read book Signal Processing Channel Estimation and Link Adaptation in MIMO OFDM Systems written by Jianjun Ran and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2008-07-24 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging wireless communication systems, such as cellular communications systems and wireless net-works, are changing the life style nowadays dramatically. The prospect of modern wireless communication systems is very attractive by declaring the ability of ubiquitous access to information with high-quality and high-speed service. The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique is one promising candidate for the $4^{th}$ generation wireless systems, due to its merits of high flexibility and low equalization complexity for wideband wireless communication applications. To further enhance the communication system capacity and reliability, multiple antenna techniques can be integrated into OFDM systems. As a preliminary step, the physical characteristics of wideband radio channels and the channel modeling issue are addressed. The channel capacity with multiple antennas is presented by considering both cases of ideal and practical estimated channel state information (CSI) in the system. The fundamentals of the OFDM transmission technique are introduced. With the OFDM transmission structu-re the frequency-selective wideband radio channel is decomposed into a set of parallel subcarriers, and each subcarrier can be treated as a flat-fading narrowband channel. Several Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) technologies are discussed, in the scope of subcarrier-based MIMO encoding and decoding within the MIMO-OFDM transceiver structure, i.\ e.\ integrate the MIMO signal processing algorithms into a wideband OFDM system, where each OFDM subcarrier is regarded individually as a narrowband flat-fading subsystem with the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Inverse Discrete Fou-rier Transform (IDFT). The simulation results and analysis are presented under various radio channel condi-tions with ideal CSI. For practical reasons, channel estimation is necessary for coherent-detection MIMO-OFDM systems. The Pilot-based Channel Estimation (PBCE) schemes are implemented to evaluate the system performance with the realistically estimated CSI. With estimated CSI for MIMO encoding/decoding and data symbol detection, the system performance is reasonably degraded. The system performance results with estimated CSI are presented, and the impact of channel estimation errors is analyzed. In order to ensure a reliable and flexible data transmission in MIMO-OFDM systems, the indicator-based link adaptation procedure is employed to optimize the system throughput by selecting a proper Transmission Mode (TM) according to the instantaneous channel conditions. The Transmission Mode Selection (TMS) procedure with two-dimensional (2D) indicators is developed. A set of indicator candidates and their appro-ximation functions are proposed. With the indicator simulation results and the proposed TMS procedure for MIMO-OFDM systems, the average system throughput results are illustrated for both the conventional link adaptation method and the proposed 2D indicator-based TMS approach. Finally, the general system performance results of MIMO-OFDM systems are summarized. Arguments and suggestions are further made on how to design a MIMO-OFDM system in various wideband wireless com-munication applications.

Download or read book Analysis of OFDM MIMO written by Jing Xiao and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a block transmission technique. In the baseband, complex-valued data symbols modulate a large number of tightly grouped carrier waveforms. The transmitted OFDM signal multiplexes several low-rate data streams and each data stream is associated with a given subcarrier. OFDM is implemented in broadband wireless access systems as a way to overcome wireless channel impairments and to improve bandwidth efficiency. OFDM is used today in wireless local area networks (LANs) as specified by the IEEE 802.11a and the ETSI HiperLAN/2 standards. It is also used for wireless digital radio and television transmissions, particularly in Europe. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication refers to wireless communication systems using an array of antennas (i.e. multiple antennas) at either the transmitter or the receiver. Multiplexing would cause interference, but MIMO systems use smart selection and/or combining techniques at the receiving end to transmit more information and to improve signal quality. MIMO systems provide a significant capacity gain over conventional single antenna systems, along with more reliable communication. In this project, we will investigate MIMO techniques for OFDM systems in the context of WiFi and WiMax. We will conduct an extensive simulation-based study of MIMO-OFDM systems. We will analyze the performance of various MIMO techniques under different fading channel conditions. It is known that the complexity of OFDM with MIMO is overwhelming due to the necessity for multiple Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) at the receiver. In order to reduce system complexity, we also propose a novel combining technique that will exploit MIMO gains with only a single FFT at the receiver.

Book BER Performance Analysis and PAPR Mitigation in MIMO OFDM Systems

This book was released on 2023-12-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless communications is expected to provide users with wireless multimedia services like high speed internet access, wireless television and mobile computing. These services are providing the communication technology with high data rates, higher carrier frequencies and mobility which enables reliable transmissions over mobile radio channels gaining much growth demand. OFDM system will be effective means of communication if this orthogonality of carrier signals are maintained properly. Modulation is the process of mapping the data onto the carrier signal amplitude or phase. Transmitting a baseband signal over a long distance is highly impossible due to loss of signal strength. MIMO systems can get better the capacity by only using few minimum number of transmit or receive antennas when compared to single input single output systems in flat fading channels. Fourth generation MIMO- OFDM systems has capacity, exposure and dependability higher over multipath fading channels.

Book Channel Estimation and Data Detection for Mobile MIMO OFDM Systems

Download or read book Channel Estimation and Data Detection for Mobile MIMO OFDM Systems written by Jie Gao and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing spectral efficient, high-speed wireless links that offer high quality- of-service and range capability has been a critical research and engineering challenge. In this thesis, we mainly address the complexity and performance issues of channel estimation and data detection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over time-varying channels. We derive the probability density function (pdf) expressions of the condition number (i.e., the maximum-to-minimum-singular-value ratio, MMSVR) of the channel state information matrix of MIMO OFDM systems. It is shown that this ratio is directly related to the noise enhancement in open-loop systems and provides a significant insight on the system capacity. A decision-directed (DD) maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) channel estimation scheme of MIMO systems is derived. Error performance of a zero- forcing receiver with the DD MAP and perfect channel estimates is provided and compared. This scheme has a low complexity and can be applied to time-varying Rayleigh fading channels with an arbitrary spaced-time correlation function. We propose an iterative channel estimation and data detection scheme for MIMO OFDM systems in the presence of inter-carrier-interference (ICI) due to the nature of time-varying channels. An ICI-based minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) detection scheme is derived. An expectation-maximization (EM) based least square (LS) channel estimator is proposed to minimize the mean-square error (MSE) of the channel estimates and to reduce the complexity of the implementation. With the estimate of the channel and initially detected symbols, ICI is estimated and removed from the received signal. Thus more accurate estimation of the channel and data detection can be obtained in the next iteration. An EM-based MAP channel estimator is derived by exploiting the frequency/time correlation of the pilot and data sub-carriers. Performance comparison is made between the proposed schemes and the ideal case - time-invariant channels and perfect channel estimation. We optimize the data transmission by exploiting the long term correlation characteristics. The transmitted data is successively detected without an error floor in spatially correlated channels. The algorithms proposed in this thesis allow low-complexity implementation of channel estimation and data detection for MIMO OFDM systems over time-varying fading channels, while providing good error performance.

Book Channel Feedback Techniques for Adaptive Mimo Ofdm Systems

Download or read book Channel Feedback Techniques for Adaptive Mimo Ofdm Systems written by Muhammad Rehan Khalid and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new generation of wireless devices support higher data rates. Most of the new standards like HSPA utilize the spatial multiplexing of MIMO channels to achieve higher data rates, and exploit the diversity of MIMO channels to provide better performance. Hence there is an increased interest in the analysis of MIMO communication systems. The eventual objective is to achieve higher data rates in MIMO systems under the constraints of limited bandwidth and power. The radio spectrum is a scarce resource, and very expensive to license. Hence improved and efficient channel utilization techniques are requisite, that exploit the radio spectrum more proficiently. The multipath characteristics of the environment cause the MIMO channels to be frequency selective. For frequency selective deep fading, MIMO system remains ineffective. OFDM, a multicarrier transmission scheme, is well recognized for its potential for attaining high rate transmission over frequency selective channels. It can transform such a frequency selective MIMO channel into a set of parallel frequency-flat channels. Implementing space resources based on OFDM i.e., MIMO-OFDM provides higher data rate.
