Book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy 7

Download or read book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy 7 written by Andre HECK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy isthemostancientsciencehumanshavepracticedonEarth. Itisascienceofextremesandoflargenumbers:extremesoftime–fromthe big bang to in?nity –, of distances, of temperatures, of density and masses, ofmagnetic?eld, etc.Itisasciencewhichishighlyvisible, notonlybecause stars and planets are accessible in the sky to the multitude, but also - cause the telescopes themselves are easily distinguishable, usually on top of scenic mountains, and also because their cost usually represent a subst- tialproportionofthenation’sbudgetandofthetaxpayerscontributionsto that budget. As such, astronomy cannot pass unnoticed. It touches on the origins of matter, of the Universe where we live, on life and on our destiny. It touches on philosophy as well as on religion. Astronomy is the direct c- tactofhumankindwithitsoriginsandtheimmensityofuniversalnature. It is indeed a science of observation where experimentation is practically - possible and which is ruled by mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistical analysis and modelling, while o?ering the largest number of veri?cations of the most advanced theories of fundamental physics such as general r- st ativity and gravitation. At the beginning of the 21 century astronomy is clearly a multidisciplinary activity touching on all aspects of science. It is therefore logical that in the past and still now, astronomy has attracted the most famous scientists, be they pure observers, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, experimentalists, and even politicians.

Book Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery for Big Data

Download or read book Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery for Big Data written by Wesley W. Chu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of data mining has made significant and far-reaching advances over the past three decades. Because of its potential power for solving complex problems, data mining has been successfully applied to diverse areas such as business, engineering, social media, and biological science. Many of these applications search for patterns in complex structural information. In biomedicine for example, modeling complex biological systems requires linking knowledge across many levels of science, from genes to disease. Further, the data characteristics of the problems have also grown from static to dynamic and spatiotemporal, complete to incomplete, and centralized to distributed, and grow in their scope and size (this is known as big data). The effective integration of big data for decision-making also requires privacy preservation. The contributions to this monograph summarize the advances of data mining in the respective fields. This volume consists of nine chapters that address subjects ranging from mining data from opinion, spatiotemporal databases, discriminative subgraph patterns, path knowledge discovery, social media, and privacy issues to the subject of computation reduction via binary matrix factorization.

  • Pages : 727 pages

Download or read book Celestial Shadows written by John Westfall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is known about the universe came from the study of celestial shadows. This book looks in detail at the way eclipses and other celestial shadows have given us amazing insights into the nature of the objects in our solar system and how they are even helping us discover and analyze planets that orbit stars other than our Sun. A variety of eclipses, transits, and occultations of the mooons of Jupiter and Saturn, Pluto and its satellite Charon, asteroids and stars have helped astronomers to work out their dimensions, structures, and shapes - even the existence of atmospheres and structures of exoplanets. Long before Columbus set out to reach the Far East by sailing West, the curved shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse revealed that we inhabit a round world, a globe. More recently, comparisons of the sunlit and Earthlit parts of the Moon have been used to determine changes in the Earth's brightness as a way of monitoring possible effects in cloud coverage which may be related to global warming. Shadows were used by the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes to work out the first estimate of the circumference of the Earth, by Galileo to measure the heights of the lunar mountains and by eighteenth century astronomers to determine the scale of the Solar System itself. Some of the rarest and most wonderful shadows of all are those cast onto Earth by the lovely "Evening Star" Venus as it goes between the Earth and the Sun. These majestic transits of Venus occur at most two in a century; after the 2012 transit, there is not a chance to observe this phenomenon until 2117, while the more common sweep of a total solar eclipse creates one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring events of nature. Though it may have once been a source of consternation or dread, solar eclipses now lead thousands of amateur astronomers and "eclipse-chasers" to travel the globe in order to experience the dramatic view under "totality." These phenomena are among the most spectacular available to observers and are given their full due in Westfall and Sheehan's comprehensive study.

Book Statistical Implicative Analysis

Download or read book Statistical Implicative Analysis written by Régis Gras and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-29 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical implicative analysis is a data analysis method created by Régis Gras almost thirty years ago which has a significant impact on a variety of areas ranging from pedagogical and psychological research to data mining. Statistical implicative analysis (SIA) provides a framework for evaluating the strength of implications; such implications are formed through common knowledge acquisition techniques in any learning process, human or artificial. This new concept has developed into a unifying methodology, and has generated a powerful convergence of thought between mathematicians, statisticians, psychologists, specialists in pedagogy and last, but not least, computer scientists specialized in data mining. This volume collects significant research contributions of several rather distinct disciplines that benefit from SIA. Contributions range from psychological and pedagogical research, bioinformatics, knowledge management, and data mining.

The special needs of developing countries, and other under-resourced areas are also highlighted. The book concludes by addressing how the teaching and learning of astronomy can be improved worldwide. This valuable overview is based on papers and posters presented by experts at a Special Session of the International Astronomical Union.

Book Advances in Knowledge Acquisition and Management

Download or read book Advances in Knowledge Acquisition and Management written by Achim Hoffmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-12-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since knowledge was recognized as a crucial part of intelligent systems in the 1970s and early 1980s, the problem of the systematic and efficient acquisition of knowledge was an important research problem. In the early days of expert systems, the focus of knowledge acquisition was to design a suitable knowledge base for the problem - main by eliciting the knowledge from available experts before the system was c- pleted and deployed. Over the years, alternative approaches were developed, such as incremental approaches which would build a provisional knowledge base initially and would improve the knowledge base while the system was used in practice. Other approaches sought to build knowledge bases fully automatically by employing machine-learning methods. In recent years, a significant interest developed regarding the problem of constructing ontologies. Of particular interest have been ontologies that could be re-used in a number of ways and could possibly be shared across diff- ent users as well as domains. The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.
