Download or read book Cantos de adolescencia written by Am?rico Paredes and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stop, Time, your fast race; /turn back to my lost infancy." With the final poem of this collection, "Upon Turning Twenty One," famed Chicano folklorist Americo Paredes closes a chapter in his life--one written during his formative years from 1932 to 1937--as he grew from a seventeen-year-old boy to a twenty-one year old man. In doing so, the renowned writer looks "toward the unknown future maze." Originally published in 1937 by Libreria Espanola in San Antonio, Texas, this new edition contains the first-ever English translations of the original Spanish poems and an introduction by the translators, scholars and poets in their own right, B. V. Olguin and Omar Vasquez Barbosa. Paredes, who died in 1999 at the age of 84, is widely considered to have been at the forefront of the movement that saw the birth of Chicana/o literary and cultural studies as an academic discipline in the 1970s and 1980s. This collection of poetry written during his teenage years lays the groundwork for themes he explored in later writings: culture conflict, race, and gender relations, materialism, hybridity, and transnationalism. In his youthful, first-person voice, Paredes explores intimate, angst-filled issues relevant to all young people, such as love, memory, and rebellion. Published as part of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project Series, this vital volume is a must read for Paredes scholars and those interested in the dynamic intersection of cultures in the 1930s. It contains a literary chronology of Paredes' literary development and includes correspondence, photos, and other materials from the Americo Paredes Papers at the Archival Collections of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin AmericanCollection at the University of Texas at Austin.

  • Publisher : UNC Press Books

Download or read book To Die in Cuba written by Louis A. Pérez Jr. and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the nineteenth century and all of the twentieth, the per capita rate of suicide in Cuba was the highest in Latin America and among the highest in the world--a condition made all the more extraordinary in light of Cuba's historic ties to the Catholic church. In this richly illustrated social and cultural history of suicide in Cuba, Louis A. Perez Jr. explores the way suicide passed from the unthinkable to the unremarkable in Cuban society. In a study that spans the experiences of enslaved Africans and indentured Chinese in the colony, nationalists of the twentieth-century republic, and emigrants from Cuba to Florida following the 1959 revolution, Perez finds that the act of suicide was loaded with meanings that changed over time. Analyzing the social context of suicide, he argues that in addition to confirming despair, suicide sometimes served as a way to consecrate patriotism, affirm personal agency, or protest injustice. The act was often seen by suicidal persons and their contemporaries as an entirely reasonable response to circumstances of affliction, whether economic, political, or social. Bringing an important historical perspective to the study of suicide, Perez offers a valuable new understanding of the strategies with which vast numbers of people made their way through life--if only to choose to end it. To Die in Cuba ultimately tells as much about Cubans' lives, culture, and society as it does about their self-inflicted deaths.

Book A Translation of Alexandro Malaspina s Meditaci n Sobre Lo Bello en la Naturaleza

This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers a facing-page translation of Alexandro Malaspina's Meditacion sobre lo Bello en la Naturaleza, an Enlightenment-era piece addressing questions of aesthetics in the wake of and in relation to contemporaneous scientific findings and philosophical thought. This work should appeal to scholars interested in philosophy and the history of Enlightenment thought. eighteenth century, and wrote the Meditacion in 1798, while imprisoned for sedition in the fortress of San Anton off La Coruna. His fall, precipitated by the reaction to the politico-economic recommendations he made to the Monarchy on the subject of colonial relations, led to the suppression of most of the results, whether botanical, zoological, ethnographic or gravimetric, of his voyage, and so the loss, until recent times, of a significant voice in Enlightenment thought. silencing of a mind at once broader and deeper than those of his most well-known counterparts Cook and La Perouse, a mind which exercised itself on the philosophical issues of the day from a vantage-point of learning and anthropological experience to which few could lay claim. Malaspina's main topics in this work are questions of aesthetics: does Beauty lie in the eye of the beholder? Is Beauty to be found in Art or in Nature? Does Beauty depend on Utility? He supplements these with Notes on a range of matters, literary, historical and scientific, opening a fascinating window onto his own time.

Book Words of the True Peoples Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos

Download or read book Words of the True Peoples Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos written by Carlos Montemayor and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume Two contains poetry by Mexican indigenous writers. Their poems appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Montemayor and Frischmann have abundantly annotated the Spanish, English, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that discuss the formal and linguistic qualities of the poems, as well as their place within contemporary poetry. These supporting materials make the anthology especially accessible and interesting for nonspecialist readers seeking a greater understanding of Mexico's indigenous peoples.
