Book Cantica Sacra Or Hymns for the Children of the Catholic Church Set to Original Music Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cantica Sacra Or Hymns for the Children of the Catholic Church Set to Original Music Classic Reprint written by John Henry Cornell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cantica Sacra, or Hymns for the Children of the Catholic Church, Set to Original Music With the object, then, of rendering the universal introduction of these Hymns practicable, by bringing the work within the reach of all, the words are printed separately, in a small, cheap book, bearing the same title, cantica sacra. Thus, the great bulk of those who will use the work have no occasion to buy the necessarily expensive book containing the music - they will learn the melodies by ear, at the dictation of the director or teacher, while the music-book will be required only by the latter, and by the few more skilful singers chosen for the alto part. In regard to the execution of the Hymns of this collection, the compiler has three favors to ask of those whom it may concern: First, that the sentiments of the differ ent Hymns, or of the different verses of the same Hymn, be carefully studied, and faithfully rendered. The various shades of musical expression, loud, soft, diminish ing and increasing in power, slackening and accelerating the time, etc., etc., cannot always be indicated, once for all, by the composer, - much is left to the judgment and taste of the director, who is supposed to understand and feel that which is to be sung, in order that under his direction it may be faithfully and artistically rendered. Second that the alto part of the Hymns, if it cannot be sung exactly as written, be omitted altogether, not being, strictly speaking, essential to their effect, though its addition greatly enhances it; and that every attempt at improvising an alto part (which is done mostly by singing thirds below the melody) be repressed, promptly, firmly, and persistently - Third: that the organist, unless he be a thorough har monist, play the accompaniments as they are written, without any addition, except perhaps that of strengthening the bass by octaves, where it can be done. The courtesy of Rev. Dr. Cummings, Pastor of St. Stephen's Church, New York, in allowing the pages of this work to be enriched by extracts from his Hymns for Catholic Schools, is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Book Musica Sacra Or Springfield and Utica Collections United

Download or read book Musica Sacra Or Springfield and Utica Collections United written by Thomas Hastings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musica Sacra, or Springfield and Utica Collections United: Consisting of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, Anthems and Chants; Arranged for Two, Three or Four Voices, With a Figured Bass for the Organ or Piano Forte On perusing the following pages, however, it will Ii: observed that some of the old tunes are diflhrently harmonized from the copies selected from W illiams and Tansur, and other authors of less note. But, to those persons who are forward to condemn every copy that dillers from the one they formerly have seen, it should be mow generally known that those cap in are grossly incorrect. Europe, as well as America, has her pretenders to science, and such were certainly Williams and Tansur and several others, whose compositions have already had a sufficient circulation. We would not be understood to complain of the Airs that those authors have compiled, for my them are tmly excellent: but the manner in which they have harmonized them, is such as no person of science or taste can, approve. Several American compis lers, however, being ignorant of this fact, have published the pieces as they found them, not even correcting the most palpable errors of the press.-others, knowing their inac curacy, have neglected the remedy from motives of [it'lldt'nca - A third, and by far the most numerous class of compilers, have failed in their attempts to correct the pie ces, from a want (1 sufficient skill in the science of Musical Composition. A con sideration of these circumstances induced us to avail ourselves, as much as possi ble, of those copies which have been proddced by the msrntcursnnn masters or Euaorz. Wherever, among classic authors, the same piece was found to be differ ently harmonized, we endeavored to select that copy which would be sung with the most interest, and which at the some time should diifer least from the one in general use. The pieces which compose this volume (with the exception of a few original ones) are derived from works of the most distinguished reputation; and the greatest care has been taken, to have them correctly printed in this editim, that We might preclude as much as possible the necessity of future alterations. Book excerpt: Plainchant is the oldest substantial body of music that has been preserved in any shape or form. It was first written down in Western Europe in the eighth to ninth centuries. Many thousands of chants have been sung at different times or places in a multitude of forms and styles, responding to the differing needs of the church through the ages. This book provides a clear and concise introduction, designed both for those to whom the subject is new and those who require a reference work for advanced study. It begins with an explanation of the liturgies that plainchant was designed to serve. It describes all the chief genres of chant, different types of liturgical book, and plainchant notations. After an exposition of early medieval theoretical writing on plainchant, Hiley provides a historical survey that traces the constantly changing nature of the repertory. He also discusses important musicians and centers of composition. Copiously illustrated with over 200 musical examples, this book highlights the diversity of practice and richness of the chant repertory in the Middle Ages. It will be an indispensable introduction and reference source on this important music for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Catholic countries of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Europe, communities of monks and nuns were growing in number and wealth. By 1750 there were at least 25,000 communities containing at least 350,000 inmates. They constructed vast buildings, dominated education, and played a large part in the practice and patronage of learning, music, and the arts. They also fulfilled an amazing variety of political, economic and social roles, notably in providing career opportunities for women. Yet many accounts of the period ignore them altogether. Prosperity and Plunder recovers this forgotten dimension of European history, assesses the importance of monasteries across Catholic Europe, and compares their position in different countries. It goes on to explain the almost complete destruction of the monasteries between 1750 and 1815 through reforming rulers, 'Enlightenment', and the French Revolution, and asks how much society gained and lost in the process.

Book Decadent Enchantments

  • Author : Katherine Bergeron
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

Download or read book Decadent Enchantments written by Katherine Bergeron and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest written tradition of European music, the art we know as Gregorian chant, is seen from an entirely new perspective in Katherine Bergeron's engaging and literate study. Bergeron traces the history of the Gregorian revival from its Romantic origins in a community of French monks at Solesmes, whose founder hoped to rebuild the moral foundation of French culture on the ruins of the Benedictine order. She draws out the parallels between this longing for a lost liturgy and the postrevolutionary quest for lost monuments that fueled the French Gothic revival, a quest that produced the modern concept of "restoration." Bergeron follows the technological development of the Gregorian restoration over a seventy-year period as it passed from the private performances of a monastic choir into the public commodities of printed books, photographs, and Gramophone records. She discusses such issues as architectural restoration, the modern history of typography, the uncanny power of the photographic image, and the authority of recorded sound. She also shows the extent to which different media shaped the modern image of the ancient repertory, an image that gave rise to conflicting notions not only of musical performance but of the very idea of music history.
