Book Practical Multivariate Analysis

Download or read book Practical Multivariate Analysis written by Abdelmonem Afifi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth edition of a popular textbook on multivariate analysis. Well-regarded for its practical and accessible approach, with excellent examples and good guidance on computing, the book is particularly popular for teaching outside statistics, i.e. in epidemiology, social science, business, etc. The sixth edition has been updated with a new chapter on data visualization, a distinction made between exploratory and confirmatory analyses and a new section on generalized estimating equations and many new updates throughout. This new edition will enable the book to continue as one of the leading textbooks in the area, particularly for non-statisticians. Key Features: Provides a comprehensive, practical and accessible introduction to multivariate analysis. Keeps mathematical details to a minimum, so particularly geared toward a non-statistical audience. Includes lots of detailed worked examples, guidance on computing, and exercises. Updated with a new chapter on data visualization.

Download or read book Canonical Analysis written by R. Gittins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationships between sets of variables of different kinds are of interest in many branches of science. The question of the analysis of relationships of this sort has nevertheless rather surprisingly received less attention from statisticians and others than it would seem to deserve. Of the available methods, that address ing the question most directly is canonical correlation analysis, here referred to for convenience as canonical analysis. Yet canonical analysis is often coolly received despite a lack of suitable alternatives. The purpose of this book is to clarify just what may and what may not be accomplished by means of canoni cal analysis in one field of scientific endeavor. Canonical analysis is concerned with reducing the correlation structure be tween two (or more) sets of variables to its simplest possible form. After a review of the nature and properties of canonical analysis, an assessment of the method as an exploratory tool of use in ecological investigations is made. Applications of canonical analysis to several sets of ecological data are described and discussed with this objective in mind. The examples are drawn largely from plant ecology. The position is adopted that canonical analysis exists primarily to be used; the examples are accordingly worked through in some detail with the aim of showing how canonical analysis can contribute towards the attainment of ecological goals, as well as to indicate the kind and extent of the insight afforded.

Book Canonical Redundancy Factoring Analysis

Download or read book Canonical Redundancy Factoring Analysis written by Wayne S. DeSarbo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interrelationships between two sets of measurements made on the same subjects can be studied by canonical correlation. Originally developed by Hotelling [1936], the canonical correlation is the maximum correlation between linear functions (canonical factors) of the two sets of variab|es. An alternative statistic to investigate the interrelationships between two sets of variables is the redundancy measure, developed by Stewart and Love [1968]. Van Den Wollenberg [1977] has developed a method of extracting factors which maximize redundancy, as opposed to canonical correlation.A component method is presented which maximizes user specified convex combinations of canonical correlation and the two nonsymmetric redundancy measures presented by Stewart and Love. Monte Carlo work comparing canonical correlation analysis, redundancy analysis, and various canonical/redundancy factoring analyses or/the Van Den Wollenberg data is presented. An empirical example is also provided.

Book The Logic of Causal Order

Download or read book The Logic of Causal Order written by James A. Davis and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1985-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social scientists routinely draw conclusions about cause and effect from their data. This book spells out the pre-statistical assumptions of multivariate research and explains in nonmathematical terms: the concepts of causal direction and system order; direct, indirect, and spurious statistical effects; signs and the sign rule; rules for introducing control variables, elaboration and explanation, "effects analysis," and path analysis. The book is not statistical in the sense of developing specific statistical tools. Rather, it explains the prestatistical assumptions required, whatever the technique. The importance of substantive knowledge about the "real world" is stressed, and the myth that causal problems can be solved by statistical calculations alone is repeatedly challenged.

Book excerpt: Spline Regression Models shows how to use dummy variables to formulate and estimate spline regression models both in situations where the number and location of the spline knots are known in advance, and where estimation is required.

Book Tree Models of Similarity and Association

Download or read book Tree Models of Similarity and Association written by James E. Corter and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-04-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clustering and tree models are widely used in the social and biological sciences to analyze similarity relations. Tree Models of Similarity and Association describes how matrices of similarities or associations among entities can be modeled using trees, and to explain some of the issues that arise in performing such analyses and correctly interpreting the results. James E. Corter clearly distinguishes ultrametric trees (fit by the techniques widely known as "hierarchical clustering") from additive trees and discusses how specific aspects of each type of tree can be interpreted through the use of applications as examples. He concludes with a discussion of when tree models might be preferable to spatial geometric models, such as those fit by multidimensional scaling (MDS) or principal components analysis (PCA).

Book Information Theory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Klaus Krippendorff
  • Publisher : SAGE
  • Release : 1986-09
  • ISBN : 9780803921320
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Information Theory written by Klaus Krippendorff and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1986-09 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information theory always has the dual appeal of bringing important concepts to the study of communication in society, and of providing a calculus for information flows within systems. This book introduces readers to basic concepts of information theory, extending its original linear conception of communication to many variables, networks, and higher-order interactions (including loops) and developing it into a method for analyzing qualitative data. It elaborates on the algebra of entropy and information, shows how complex models of data are constructed and tested, describes algorithms for exploring multivariate structures using such models, and gives illustrative applications of these techniques. The book is designed as a text but it can also serve as a handbook for social researchers and systems theorists with an interest in communication.
