Book excerpt: Canoeing In The Wilderness: Edited By Clifton Johnson This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. Book excerpt: At the time Thoreau made this wilderness canoe trip he was forty years old. The record of the journey is the latter half of his The Maine Woods, which is perhaps the finest idyl of the forest ever written. It is particularly charming in its blending of meditative and poetic fancies with the minute description of the voyager's experiences. The chief attraction that inspired Thoreau to make the trip was the primitiveness of the region. Here was a vast tract of almost virgin woodland, peopled only with a few loggers and pioneer farmers, Indians, and wild animals. No one could have been better fitted than Thoreau to enjoy such a region and to transmit his enjoyment of it to others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canoe and the Saddle: Adventures Among the Northwestern Rivers and Forests; And Isthmiana Theodore Winthrop's celebrated romance of frontier adventure has been out of print for some years, but the frequent calls for a new edition, properly illustrated, testify to its abiding charm and value. In undertaking such an edition, I have felt that a book which seems destined to remain the chief classic of our early Northwest deserves most careful editing and very generous illustration. The reprint here presented, with its addition of the author's letters and journals, cover ing his entire stay on the Pacific Coast, and with illustrations selected from a wide field, will doubtless appeal to an even larger circle of readers than that which welcomed The Canoe and the Saddle on its first appearance, fifty years ago. Book excerpt: "Canoeing with the Cree" is a 1935 book by Eric Sevareid recounting a 2,250 mile canoe trip from Minneapolis, Minnesota to York Factory on the Hudson Bay. With only an 18-foot canoe, little cash, and a bad map, the boys spent four months racing the oncoming winter; paddling through dangerous rapids, inclement weather, and hungry mosquitoes, they barely survived with their lives. Drawn from the journals they kept, "Canoeing with the Cree" remains a simple, but fantastic, classic travel-adventure book.Contents:We're Off!The New LifeSnakes!Tragedy-AlmostRed River MudReady For The PlungeInto The Land Of The CreeThe Royal Northwest MountedHumiliation Of The "Sans Souci""The Die Is Cast"Canoeing With The CreeGod's CountryThe Great TestVictory-And Pine AppleHalf-Breeds And MuskegEnd Of The TrailEinstein Books' edition of "Canoeing With The Cree" contains supplementary texts:* "Canoeing In The Wilderness", By Henry David Thoreau.* "Snow Shoes And Canoes", By William Henry Giles Kingston.* "Call Of The Wild", By Jack London.

Download or read book Keep on Paddling written by Roy Cerny and published by Go to Publish. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events in these true tales of the canoe country of northern Minnesota and Ontario were compiled over the authors' lifetime of experiences in the woods. Working with Boy Scouts and in his later years with employees, friends, family, and folks from his church, the author has led perhaps over 500 people on trips into the Boundary Waters. The experiences on these trips over the past 50 years have provided a wealth of material that the author has crafted into enjoyable stories. Some of the stories are educational, many are hilarious, more than a few are inspirational, all of them are entertaining. Each story stands alone but the book is best read from the front. Words followed by asterisks are defined in a glossary for readers unfamiliar with canoeing or the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. After reading this book, the author hopes you will be better informed about the lake country, you will have a greater appreciation for the wilderness, and you might even be encouraged to take a canoe trip to see Gods' country for yourself. If this is true, then the author has succeeded in his purpose.
