Book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply

Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Book excerpt: By the author of Low Life, the now-classic history of NYC's outlaw underbelly--a meticulously researched, evocatively illustrated, profoundly meditative account of the city's upstate reservoirs Without the upstate reservoir system that brings fresh water to New York City, the city would have faded into insignificance. But this engineering triumph had a cost: From 1907 to 1967, twenty-six upstate villages, farms, forests, and other natural areas were bought for a fraction of their value, demolished, then submerged to create the Catskills and Delaware watershed systems. Compelled to understand "the air of permanent mourning" in their vicinity, Lucy Sante marshals the same gifts that made Low Life a now-classic of NYC history: a meticulously detailed accounting of their creation, a trove of rarely seen visual history, and a master of literary nonfiction's sensibility for the essential paradox at the heart of this story: the triumph NYC's nineteen-reservoir system represents, and the tragedy of its creation.

Among the sites listed in the guide are a number in the Adirondacks, on the Tug Hill Plateau, and on Long island. To facilitate amateur and professional participation in assembling ornithological data the book contains a section on the New York State Avian Records Committee, its prescribed list of rarities, and instructions on how to report the observation of a rare bird. Book Fly Fishing Guide to the Upper Delaware River

Download or read book Fly Fishing Guide to the Upper Delaware River written by Paul Weamer and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trout that inhabit the Upper Delaware River are large, wild, and highly selective, with fighting skills so legendary that many well-traveled anglers consider them to be among the most athletic in the world. Because of the heavy hatches, the presence of trophy trout, and the ability to fish the river from a drift boat, the Upper Delaware attracts anglers from across the country and beyond each year. But this vast and complex river system does not surrender its secrets easily. To help anglers navigate the big water, Fly-Fishing Guide to the Upper Delaware River provides detailed information about the three distinct tailwater branches that constitute the Upper Delaware system--the West Branch, the East Branch, and the Main Stem--with maps that point the way to exact fishing locations. Included are descriptions of public-access areas, directions for reaching them, and their corresponding GPS coordinates. This comprehensive guide analyzes the trout species that live in the Upper Delaware--browns, rainbows, and brookies--and offers important seasonal hatch information, fishing techniques, and recipes of Upper Delaware trout-tested patterns so that your fly box will be up to the challenge of the rivers celebrated fish.
