Book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids

Download or read book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.

Book Cannabis in nutrition

Download or read book Cannabis in nutrition written by Pharmacology University and published by Pharmacology University. This book was released on 2021-11-10 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cannabis sativa is a plant that has lived very near man since ancient times, dating back to thousands of years before Christ. During this time, it has been attributed all kinds of properties: textile, ceremonial, aphrodisiac, medicinal, and even nutritional. The progressive release of restrictions on the research and consumption of cannabis derivatives in more and more countries has opened the door to exploring its multiple properties, including its effect on eating disorders and nutrition. Historical records exist which describe the intake of cannabis in various ancient civilizations. One of the most interesting ones found is from China, where its consumption, as a food, was recurrent during the post-World War II famines. Nowadays, along with the popularization of cannabis the medicinal use, there is a growing movement promoting its consumption or its derivatives as a dietary supplement, due to its beneficial effect on health and well-being in general. Cannabis is also a solid candidate to be incorporated into the culinary world, due to its organoleptic properties: the flavor, aroma, and texture that its incorporation into various recipes can provide. Do you know what nutrition is? It is necessary to answer this question before talking about the nutritional properties of cannabis and how its derivatives could positively influence daily well-being. Likewise, Do you know what is an orexigenic? Because some molecules present in the cannabis plant have properties of this type, it is for this reason that its use has been proposed as an alternative to treat eating disorders. Did you know that the cannabis leaf is rich in certain types of carbohydrates, proteins, and antioxidants? The nutritional properties of the cannabis plant are a topic that is often neglected, overshadowed by the multiple benefits demonstrated by cannabinoids, its main molecules in the medicinal use of the same. Did you know that you can incorporate cannabis into your daily diet by combining it with products such as flour, dairy products, and oils? This is a simple way to include the benefits of cannabinoids in your daily routine, but these preparations are not so easy to make, and their misuse can result in adverse or, for some, unwanted effects. Incorporating cannabis in daily life is a possible practice that can be beneficial. Nonetheless, it is necessary to have the relevant information at hand. With this in mind, the Pharmacology University team has developed this audiobook, in which you can find the answers to the above questions and many others that you may not yet be asking yourself. You will learn about many topics with this audiobook: including basic concepts, such as nutrition, food types, origins of eating disorders, and how cannabis or its derivatives can significantly contribute to their resolution, as well as to the improvement of health in general. In short, now that you have at your disposal the necessary information, supported by scientific evidence, we invite you to explore the many ways in which you can prepare homemade recipes using cannabis, thus casually incorporating it into a daily life oriented to wellness and health.

Download or read book Cannabis as Medicine written by Betty Wedman-St.Louis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years cannabis has been used as a therapeutic medicine around the world. Cannabis was an accepted medicine during the second half of the 19th century, but its use declined because single agent pain medications were advocated by physicians who demanded standardization of medicines. It was not until 1964 when the chemical structure of THC (delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol) was elucidated and its pharmacological effects began to be understood. Numerous therapeutic effects of cannabis have been reviewed, but cannabis-based medicines are still an enigma because of legal issues. Many patients could benefit from cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids found in Cannabis sativa L. These patients suffer from medical conditions including chronic pain, chronic inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders, and other debilitating illnesses. As more states are legalizing medical cannabis, prescribers need a reliable source which provides clinical information in a succinct format. This book focuses on the science of cannabis as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory supplement. It discusses cannabis uses in the human body for bone health/osteoporosis; brain injury and trauma; cancer; diabetes; gastrointestinal conditions; mental health disorders; insomnia; pain; anxiety disorders; depression; migraines; eye disorders; and arthritis and inflammation. There is emphasis on using the whole plant — from root to raw leaves and flowers discussing strains, extraction and analysis, and use of cannabis-infused edibles. Features: Provides an understanding of the botanical and biochemistry behind cannabis as well as its use as a dietary supplement. Discusses endocannabinoid system and cannabinoid receptors. Includes information on antioxidant benefits, pain receptors using cannabinoids, and dosage guidelines. Presents research on cannabis treatment plans, drug-cannabis interactions and dosing issues, cannabis vapes, edibles, creams, and suppositories. Multiple appendices including a glossary of cannabis vocabulary, how to use cannabis products, a patient guide and recipes as well as information on cannabis for pets.

Book The Role of Hemp Cannabis Sativa L as a Functional Food in Vegetarian Nutrition

Download or read book The Role of Hemp Cannabis Sativa L as a Functional Food in Vegetarian Nutrition written by Gianluca Rizzo and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Recently, there has been a renewed interest in Cannabis sativa and its uses. The recreational use of inflorescences as a source of THC has led to the legal restriction of C. sativa cultivation to limit the detrimental effects of psychotropic substance abuse on health. However, this has also limited the cultivation of textile/industrial varieties with a low content of THC used for textile and nutritional purposes. While previously the bans had significantly penalized the cultivation of C. sativa, today many countries discriminate between recreational use (marijuana) and industrial and food use (hemp). The stalks of industrial hemp (low in psychotropic substances) have been used extensively for textile purposes while the seeds are nutritionally versatile. From hemp seeds, it is possible to obtain flours applicable in the bakery sector, oils rich in essential fatty acids, proteins with a high biological value and derivatives for fortification, supplementation and nutraceutical purposes. Hemp seed properties seem relevant for vegetarian diets, due to their high nutritional value and underestimated employment in the food sector. Hemp seed and their derivatives are a valuable source of protein, essential fatty acids and minerals that could provide additional benefit to vegetarian nutrition. This document aims to explore the information available in the literature about hemp seeds from a nutritional point of view, highlighting possible beneficial effects for humans with particular attention to vegetarian nutrition as a supplemental option for a well-planned diet

Download or read book Pot in Pans written by Robyn Griggs Lawrence and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pot in Pans: A History of Eating Weed is a comprehensive history of cannabis as a unique culinary ingredient, from ancient India and Persia to today’s explosive new market. Cannabis, the hottest new global food trend, has been providing humans with nutrition, medicine, and solace – against all odds – since the earliest cavepeople discovered its powers. In colorful detail, the book explores the debate over the cannabis plant’s taxonomy and nomenclature, then follows as it co-evolves with humans throughout history, beloved by the masses, reviled by the elite, and shrouded in conflict and secrecy. The story is held together by the thread of the Islamic confection majoun, created to manipulate a band of twelfth-century fedayeen, a legend that later inspired Western intellectuals and literati to discover and enjoy hashish and majoun. It’s the story of how a U.S. drug czar got cannabis prohibited around the world and how some cultures worked around that. It’s the story of how a recipe for majoun made its way into the hands of Alice B. Toklas, an ex-pat in Paris, and then into the pages of a cookbook published in New York and London, leading to a major mix-up in a major motion picture that morphed majouninto the pot brownie and turned the pot brownie into a Western icon forevermore. From the rowdy band of artists, rebels, and intellectuals who partook of majoun’s charms and to an activist who made the pot brownie a symbol of compassion, it’s the story of how cannabis cookery and hash eating survived through decades of global prohibition and the birth of a skies-the-limit cannabis-infused food industry. Along the way, Robyn Griggs Lawrence explores the medicinal qualities of cannabis and its resurgence as a both a recreational drug and a respite from various illnesses and ailments. With recipes and stories throughout, this work is sure to entertain and inform readers about the history of cannabis as an edible ingredient in a variety of foods.
