Book Combating Canine Cancers with Phytochemicals

Download or read book Combating Canine Cancers with Phytochemicals written by Katrin Sak and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a serious and ever-growing health concern not only in humans but also in dogs. Considering the differences in average lifespans, people commonly experience the loss of their companion dogs, representing a traumatic event to pet owners. On the one hand, better nutrition and improved care with many recent advancements in veterinary medicine have allowed dogs to live longer. On the other hand, this has involved an increased prevalence of aging-related diseases, including different types of malignancies. In fact, cancer afflicts one in every three dogs, being the most common cause of canine death. Hence, dogs with cancer require treatment, but differently from the human oncology, there are only few established standards of care for clinical management of canine tumours, besides the lack of effective drugs. Research into identification of novel efficient anticancer compounds and development of new therapeutic options are therefore highly needed to help man's best friend in combating malignant neoplasms. Over the past few decades, researchers have paid attention to the health benefits of various plant secondary metabolites, leading to the development of several new drugs for human medicine. Proceeding from this success, in this book, the current knowledge about anticancer effects of plant-derived compounds in different canine cancer models is compiled, discussing the role of phytochemicals in vitro canine cancer cell lines, in vivo xenografted mice, and in tumour-bearing dogs. Although still limited, these data reveal a great potential of plant compounds in reducing proliferation and inducing death of cells derived from different types of canine tumours, allowing these natural substances to be considered as promising anticancer drug candidates for dogs. This approach can not only result in the development of more efficient therapeutic agents for canine oncology in the future, but also provide new possibilities for chemopreventive strategies. Finally, considering the high biological, histological, and clinical similarities between canine and human tumours, knowledge on bioactivities of specific phytochemicals in cancer-bearing dogs can ultimately benefit both species, accelerating drug development paths for humans and promoting general advancement of oncological discipline.

Book The Role of Clinical Studies for Pets with Naturally Occurring Tumors in Translational Cancer Research

Download or read book The Role of Clinical Studies for Pets with Naturally Occurring Tumors in Translational Cancer Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-01-09 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional preclinical mouse models of cancer have been very useful for studying the biology of cancer, however they often lack key characteristics of human cancers. As a result, many novel drug candidates fail in human clinical trials despite evidence of drug efficacy in those preclinical models. Thus, researchers are seeking new approaches to augment preclinical knowledge before undertaking clinical trials for human patients. Recently, there has been renewed interest in comparative oncology - the study of naturally developing cancers in animals as models for human disease - as one way to improve cancer drug development and reduce attrition of investigational agents. Tumors that spontaneously develop in pet dogs and other companion animals as a result of normal aging share many characteristics with human cancers, such as histological appearance, tumor genetics, biological behavior, molecular targets, and therapeutic response. In June 2015 the Institute of Medicine hosted a workshop to examine the rationale and potential for integrating clinical trials for pet patients with naturally occurring cancers into translational cancer research and development. Participants discussed the research needs, strategies, and resources to support greater integration of clinical trials for pets with cancer into translational research pathways, and challenges and potential solutions for facilitating that integration. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book excerpt: How man’s best friend could help cure man’s greatest scourge: “An Emperor of All Maladies for dog lovers” (Dr. Sarah Boston, author of Lucky Dog: How Being a Veterinarian Saved My Life). Drawn from extensive research, on-the-ground reporting, and personal experience, this book explores the fascinating role dogs (and cats) are playing in the search of cures for cancer. Learn how veterinarians and oncologists are working together to discover new treatments—cutting-edge therapies designed to help both animals and people suffering from cancer. Heal introduces readers to the field of comparative oncology by describing several research projects aimed at finding new therapies for cancers that are similar in dogs and people, including lymphoma, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, melanoma, and gastric cancer. The author, who lost her sister to gastric cancer, also writes about the emerging science behind the remarkable ability of dogs to sniff out early stage cancer and the efforts underway to translate that talent into diagnostic devices for early detection of the disease. In the course of bringing these dogs and their human companions to life, Arlene Weintraub takes her own personal journey from grief to healing, as she shows how man’s best friend might be the key to unlocking the mysteries of cancer. “Readers will share Weintraub’s growing appreciation for the canine and feline subjects (and their owners) who are helping to advance cancer research.” —Publishers Weekly

Book My Dog Has Cancer What Can I Do

Download or read book My Dog Has Cancer What Can I Do written by Heather Beuke Diers and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While documenting Nolas journey with cancer and holistic medicine, I gathered information that can now guide you through every stage of your dogs cancer. After completing hundreds of hours of research and taking a great team of veterinarians advice, I have created an economical, cancer-fighting and immune-building protocol, for any canine (or human!) fighting cancer. I explain how cancer works in the body and how to create a cancer-killing environment with, wait for itFOOD! How you treat the body will affect the outcome this thought should empower you! Although we were able to turn a three-months-to-live diagnosis into a year of great quality of life for our girl, I believe we could have prolonged her life even longer if we had started with the protocol with which we ended shared in My Dog Has Cancer. What Can I Do? Nola had a fast-spreading, incurable cancer, osteosarcoma, which would not wait for me to catch up on my research. My mission is to save you time, so you can start fighting cancer immediately. The intent is not to persuade you to do exactly as we did; I also share our mistakes and changes I would consider, if faced with the same circumstances again. This protocol should not replace the care of your veterinarian and other necessary medical providers. Always inform them of all food and supplements in your protocol, before giving them to your pet. I am not a veterinarian, but I worked closely with my veterinarian, who practices both Western and holistic medicine, while building our protocol to treat Nolas cancer.
