Book excerpt: A Cupid's Work Is Never Done Lynn LaFleur Ally Briscoe falls head over heels the first time she sees Bain Duncan, but has no luck in getting the black-haired hunk to notice her. New to the Fort Worth area and now a single man, Bain wants to do his job and be left alone. Getting involved with another woman is at the bottom of his to-do list. Claudius Ulysses Pervis Ichabod Derryberry-alias Cupid-tells Ally the solution to getting Bain's attention is simple-she has to seduce him. And what better day for that than Valentine's Day? Anastasia's Style N.J. Walters Anastasia Style, owner of Hassle-free Holidays, is having anything but a hassle-free Valentine's Day. Her normally reliable car has a flat and she has a delivery to make for a last minute, lucrative client. And if that wasn't enough to make a woman crazy, she still has to make it to her lawyer's office in time to sign her divorce papers. She just has to set the stage for her client's romantic evening and then she's off to her lawyer's office to officially end her marriage to Mason Style. Except her client has other ideas about how Anastasia will be spending her evening, and he has no intention of ever letting her go. Cupid's Shaft Desiree Holt Dumped by her shallow lover for a leggy blonde, Jessie Rawlins was anticipating a lonely, depressing Valentine's Day in her vacation cabin. Then a snowstorm dropped hot, sexy hunk Riley Malone on her doorstep. Suddenly the night took on a whole new meaning as he led her on the sexual adventure of her life. Curse of Cupid Christine McKay Constantine, also known as Cupid, is slave to the god Eros. Bound by a curse, Constantine's only chance at freedom is to find a human lover willing to participate in solving the Fates' riddle. Six times the cock must blow, once as a lady, once as beau. Once upon the master's head, once below the leather strap. Once where feet must tread and at last within the trap. Only then will the bonds be broke and freedom, your right to invoke. Inadvertently stuck by Cupid's arrow on Valentine's Day, Rose falls under Constantine's spell. They have less than twenty-four hours to complete their passionate sexual marathon. Join them as Rose explores her hidden vixen under Constantine's experienced touch, tongue and tutelage. I, Robot Valentine Alison Paige Ally hasn't risked love since her divorce. Luckily, in the year 2106 divorces are finalized within days and sex toys are humanoid robots. But healing the heart takes time. So why after two weeks with her Valentine's gift, a Companion sex robot, is she wishing he were as real as her growing love for him? Thomas Zentry, owner of Issamov Enterprises and model for the Companion robot, would do anything to win Ally's heart, including posing as her personal sex robot. But he can't help wondering-is Ally falling for the robot or the man? Recipe for Love Nina Nash Early Valentine's Day morning Gabriella is summoned to her grandmother's home with an urgent phone call. When she arrives there all is well-there is no emergency. The reason for the call is the family tale-and recipe-that is about to be passed down to Gabi. It is a treasure that will change her life, the way it has changed the lives of generations of women before her. Can one bite of a decadent cannoli seal the destinies of lovers? For some it can.

Book excerpt: An untamed passion runs wild in this sizzling historical romance from “one of the finest Western writers of the decade” (Romantic Times). She was his captive . . . Cholla seethed with fury. The Apache scout had risked his life tracking down renegades for the white man only to find himself chained on an army prison train. Well, if they wanted a vicious criminal, he’d give them one—he’d even force a woman to help him escape. Sierra Forester had gotten in his way, and he was in no mood to let the beautiful widow go. He didn’t intend to harm her, but it was a long way from St. Louis to Arizona, and along the trail he vowed to discover exactly what his lovely captive knew about unleashing her own desires. He was her passion . . . Every day Sierra grew less afraid of her captor, even though her husband had died at the hands of the Apache. But this man seemed to have more honor and courage than anyone she’d ever known. As they moved west, the handsome warrior protected her from wild animals and wilder men—and tempted her with delights she’d never imagined. Now her traitorous soul hoped she’d never be free from his muscular embrace. Her urges were scandalous, but Sierra could resist no longer. She would give anything to savor the wild ecstasy of his searing touch. Praise for the writing of Georgina Gentry “Georgina has done it again.” —Madeline Baker, New York Times–bestselling author “Strongly crafted characters . . . Sizzling sexuality . . . Book The Red and the Black

Download or read book The Red and the Black written by Robert Miklitsch and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical wisdom has it that we said a long goodbye to film noir in the 1950s. Robert Miklitsch begs to differ. Pursuing leads down the back streets and alleyways of cultural history, The Red and the Black proposes that the received rise-and-fall narrative about the genre radically undervalues the formal and thematic complexity of '50s noir and the dynamic segue it effected between the spectacular expressionism of '40s noir and early, modernist neo-noir. Mixing scholarship with a fan's devotion to the crooked roads of critique, Miklitsch autopsies marquee films like D.O.A., Niagara, and Kiss Me Deadly plus a number of lesser-known classics. Throughout, he addresses the social and technological factors that dealt deuce after deuce to the genre--its celebrated style threatened by new media and technologies such as TV and 3-D, color and widescreen, its born losers replaced like zombies by All-American heroes, the nation rocked by the red menace and nightmares of nuclear annihilation. But against all odds, the author argues, inventive filmmakers continued to make formally daring and socially compelling pictures that remain surprisingly, startlingly alive. Cutting-edge and entertaining, The Red and the Black reconsiders a lost period in the history of American movies.

Book In Praise of New Travelers

Download or read book In Praise of New Travelers written by Isabel Hoving and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching postcolonial theory through cultural analysis, this book offers an accessible and concrete appraisal of current developments in postcolonial criticism. Detailed readings of a range of Anglophone Caribbean migrant women's texts from the late 1980s and 1990s lead to sharp insights into three issues that are crucial to an understanding of the field: place, voice, and silence. The discussion of these issues allows us to trace current feminist, postmodern, and postcolonial debates about the nature of the speaking subject, as it is emerging from today's postcolonial cultural practices. Postcolonial criticism often understands this subject as hybrid and multiple. This book shows how the specifics of this multiplicity must be acknowledged through analysis of the power structures and the violence through which this multiple subject is established. The book is also a consistent inquiry into reading positions. The argument about the differences between postcolonialist, black and Caribbean feminist, white feminist, and postmodern criticism is conducted as a discussion about the effects, insights, and blindnesses produced by these different ways of reading Caribbean migrant women's writing. Scrutinizing the grain of these texts encourages us to move beyond the kind of general statements for which postcolonial theory has been severely criticized. The author also extends her critique of reading positions to issues of methodology, using these approaches to direct her interpretation. Narratology is supplemented by an analysis of the interdiscursive processes through which texts are created, and psychoanalytic concepts are used to explore the ambiguous merits of postcolonial reading. Above all, In Praise of New Travelers celebrates the vigorous, subversive, and liberating creativity of an accomplished generation of Caribbean migrant women writers.
