Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Candid Examination of Theism Such being, then, what I conceive the only reasonable, as well as the most truly moral, way of regarding the question to be discussed in the following pages, even if the conclusions yielded by this discussion were more negative than they are, I should deem it culpable cowardice in me for this reason to publish anonymously. For even if an inquiry of the'present kind could ever result in a final demonstration of Atheism, there might be much for its author to regret, but nothing for him to be ashamed of; and, by parity of reasoning, in whatever degree the result of such an inquiry is seen to have a tendency to negative the theistic theory, the author should not be ashamed candidly to acknowledge his conviction as to the degree of such tendency, provided only that his convic tion is an honest one, and that he is conscious of its having been reached by using his faculties with the utmost care of which he is capable. Book Selections from the Literature of Theism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections from the Literature of Theism Classic Reprint written by Alfred Caldecott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Literature of Theism This volume has been prepared with the aim of bringing together within a small compass some of the leading positions in the philosophy of religion. It is agreed on all hands, in our day, that no one, except here and there an original genius, can expect to be in line with twentieth-century thought who dispenses himself from reference to the positions held by great minds. It is by training his mind in their high thoughts that he can expect to win power and insight for himself. Such training may be extended indefinitely, and the vastness of the field tends, no doubt, to discourage many from ever entering upon it - they attain to belief, or disbelief, on authority, or by reference to some single influence with which they have been brought into contact, quite casually perhaps. But in the range of religious arguments there are some which are of cardinal importance, and among the men who have given to the world their meditations there are some who are acclaimed as masters. The volume contains a selection of such principal arguments, and our only doubt as to its value lies in the possibility that our choice, restricted for space as it is, may not have been the best that could have been made. Book Peter Edwards s Candid Reasons Examined and Answered Classic Reprint

Download or read book Peter Edwards s Candid Reasons Examined and Answered Classic Reprint written by David Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter Edwards's Candid Reasons Examined and Answered All christians profess to receive the holy scriptures as a directory in faith and practice, and to believe that the mind of God is plainly revealed; or otherwise, there is no revelation at all; for if our duty to God, and obedience to Christ, is not plainly expressed, but left to analogy and inference, then all is left to the ingenuity or imagination of man, which varies according to education and interest, or erroneous principles embraced. To me the subjects and modes of baptism, are as plain as language or example can make them; yet for more than one hundred years volumes have been written on this subject; and yet the dispute continues. I never either wished or expected to appear in public on this subject; but some years ago a pamphlet was reprinted in America written by Peter Edwards in England, and spread with uncommon zeal, as if it was unanswerable. I was frequently asked, if I had read it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Theism It was my original intention to fill the latter half of the volume with notes, referring to the literature of the subject; and, with this end in view, I have kept it back for two years. That literature, however, is so vast, and is becoming so increasingly complex, that I have thought it better to print these Aspects of Theism1 very much as they were spoken, and to offer them without notes, as a short study of a great problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vindication of the Scripture-Doctrine of Original Sin: From Mr. Taylor's Free and Candid Examination of It to Which Are Added, Several Discourses Relative to the Same Subject The following Sheets pretend to no more than a Vindication of the Scripture-Doctrine of Original Sin, from Mr. Taylor's Misrepresentations of it, and his Objections against it; and a Vindication of several d104s of Scripture, in which this Doctrine is contained, from the forced and unnatural Senses which, the Author apprehends, Mr. Taylor hath put upon them, in favour of his own Scheme. No further Explication and Proof of this Doctrine is here attempted, than what was necessary to these Purposes. The Writer most sincerely joins with Mr. Taylor's hearty Wish, in his Preface, That we may all study the Scriptures impartially, peaceably, and in the Spirit of Love. It is hoped nothing will be found contrary to that Spirit in the ensuing Pages. Mr Taylor would have us freely use our own Judgment, without any Regard to his. And he declareth, If we are led into any Error, by an implicit Faith in what he saith, we ourselves shall be accountable for it. This Book is writ with a sincere Intention and Desire, that none may be accountable for any such Error. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
