Download or read book Adaptive Oncogenesis written by James DeGregori and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular understanding holds that genetic changes create cancer. James DeGregori uses evolutionary principles to propose a new way of thinking about cancerÕs occurrence. Cancer is as much a disease of evolution as it is of mutation, one in which mutated cells outcompete healthy cells in the ecosystem of the bodyÕs tissues. His theory ties cancerÕs progression, or lack thereof, to evolved strategies to maximize reproductive success. Through natural selection, humans evolved genetic programs to maintain bodily health for as long as necessary to increase the odds of passing on our genesÑbut not much longer. These mechanisms engender a tissue environment that favors normal stem cells over precancerous ones. Healthy tissues thwart cancer cellsÕ ability to outcompete their precancerous rivals. But as our tissues age or accumulate damage from exposures such as smoking, normal stem cells find themselves less optimized to their ecosystem. Cancer-causing mutations can now help cells adapt to these altered tissue environments, and thus outcompete normal cells. Just as changes in a speciesÕ habitat favor the evolution of new species, changes in tissue environments favor the growth of cancerous cells. DeGregoriÕs perspective goes far in explaining who gets cancer, when it appears, and why. While we cannot avoid mutations, it may be possible to sustain our tissuesÕ natural and effective system of defense, even in the face of aging or harmful exposures. For those interested in learning how cancers arise within the human body, the insights in Adaptive Oncogenesis offer a compelling perspective.
Download or read book Never Fear Cancer Again written by Raymond Francis and published by Health Communications, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most cancer research dollars have been wasted by asking the wrong questions, looking in the wrong places, and recycling the same failed approaches while expecting different results. Conventional cancer treatments damage health, cause new cancers, lower the quality of life, and decrease the chances of survival. In fact, most people who die from cancer are not dying from cancer, but from their treatments! That's the bad news. Here's the good news: We can end the cancer epidemic. In Never Fear Cancer Again, readers will gain a revolutionary new understanding of health and disease and will come to understand that cancer is a biological process that can be turned on and off, not something that can be surgically removed or destroyed with radiation or toxic chemicals. So whether cancer has already been diagnosed or if prevention is the concern, it is possible to turn off the wayward production of these malfunctioning cells once and for all by reading this book and implementing its strategies. The key to any disease has one simple cause: malfunctioning cells that are created by either deficiency or toxicity. By switching off the malfunctioning cells, you switch off the cancer. Never Fear Cancer Again guides readers along six pathways that cause deficiency or toxicity at the cellular level: nutritional path, genetic path, medical path, toxin path, physical path, and the psychological path. By making key lifestyle changes, people truly have the power to take control of cancer and transform their health. This radically different, yet holistic approach restored author Raymond Francis back to health just as it has helped thousands of others, many of whom were told they had no other options or that their cancer was incurable. Take back your health with this book and never fear cancer again.

Download or read book The Identity of the History of Science and Medicine written by Andrew Cunningham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these essays, Andrew Cunningham is concerned with issues of identity - what was the identity of topics, disciplines, arguments, diseases in the past, and whether they are identical with (more usually, how they are not identical with) topics, disciplines, arguments or diseases in the present. Historians usually tend to assume such continuous identities of present attitudes and activities with past ones, and rarely question them; the contention here is that this gives us a false image of the very things in the past that we went to look for.
Download or read book Lung Cancer written by Barbara Driscoll and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, Lung Cancer, Volume 2: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Methods and Reviews, in the Methods in Molecular Medicine series presents an overview of the current status of those methods useful in the diagnosis and tre- ment of lung cancer—both as it exists in the clinic and as it is being revoluti- ized in the laboratory. The book is intended to serve as a resource for researchers wishing to increase their knowledge of current and cutting edge technologies, in order that their investigations into neoplasms of the lung may benefit from this enriched diversity of techniques and approaches. Owing to the complex nature of the disease and the variety of methods available to analyze and attack it, no volume attempting to define diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to lung cancer can ever be complete. The sheer number of investigators involved in lung cancer research guarantees that some aspect will be inadvertently excluded. However, I hope that the range of techniques included herein will serve to open up new avenues of investigation for both the novice and experienced researcher.

Download or read book Cancer Free Your Guide to Gentle Non toxic Healing Fifth Edition written by Bill Henderson and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book "If you love your stricken one, this is your Bible." said Denzel Koh of Brisbane, Australia after he healed his daughter's cancer using the information in a previous edition of this book. A cancer diagnosis always causes fear. All of us have seen relatives and friends destroyed by conventional cancer treatment. Now, thanks to books like this one and the Internet, you can quickly learn what you need to know. You can heal the cancer using natural, non-toxic substances that work. What you need is a guide to cut through the overwhelming jungle of information. This book provides that guide. The information in it has been refined over twelve years using feedback from real cancer survivors about what worked for them. Bill Henderson, one of the authors, has counseled about 4,000 cancer patients by phone and video in 64 countries. At least 3,000 of them have recovered using his information. He is not a medical professional. He is a "reporter" furnishing you with information that consists of "what he would do if he were you or your loved one." His coaching is available to you after you have read this book, if you need it. The co-author is Dr. Carlos Garcia, a formally trained M.D. who has broken out of that mold and trained himself to be a well-informed holistic physician. His Utopia Wellness clinic in Oldsmar, Florida regularly helps Stage IV cancer patients heal themselves. Bill Henderson has published 165 free newsletters on natural cancer treatment to 38,000 subscribers all over the world, starting in 1999. The information in these newsletters has now been incorporated into this, his third book. The book is up-to-date, specific and accurate. Bill and Dr. Garcia inform you of over 140 web sites and dozens of other books and newsletters you can use to expand your knowledge of natural cancer treatment. The self-treatments they recommend are harmless enough that you can start them immediately, without more research, if you like. They do not interfere with conventional cancer therapy, if that is your choice. In fact, they offset most of the side effects of that treatment. "Cancer is not a disease," says Bill. "It is a reaction to what your body has experienced. Reverse those causes and the cancer goes away. Continue what you did to reverse it and it stays away." Bill explains that there are four common characteristics of all cancers. These have been known since the 1920's: 1. Low oxygen uptake by the cells. 2. A weak immune system. 3. Toxins -- usually caused by diet and dental work. 4. Acidity -- again, usually caused by diet, as well as stress and dental work. Bill Henderson's and Dr. Garcia's recommended regimen tracks with the knowledge for which Otto Warburg, a famous German doctor and researcher, won a Nobel Prize in 1931. He described the cancer cell and stressed the need to reverse the above four characteristics of the cancer in order to heal it. None of these are addressed by conventional cancer treatment. Bill's mission to help cancer patients heal started with his experience with his former wife, Marjorie. Her ovarian cancer was treated with conventional cancer treatment from 1990 to 1994, when she died. Bill is convinced that the treatment killed her. He wants to help as many people as possible avoid her fate. Dr. Garcia's mission is to help cancer patients heal themselves starting in a controlled clinical environment and continuing at home. He has been doing this successfully for 15 years.
Download or read book How to Win the Nobel Prize written by J. Michael BISHOP and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989 Michael Bishop and Harold Varmus were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery that normal genes under certain conditions can cause cancer. In this book, Bishop tells us how he and Varmus made their momentous discovery. More than a lively account of the making of a brilliant scientist, How to Win the Nobel Prize is also a broader narrative combining two major and intertwined strands of medical history: the long and ongoing struggles to control infectious diseases and to find and attack the causes of cancer. Alongside his own story, that of a youthful humanist evolving into an ambivalent medical student, an accidental microbiologist, and finally a world-class researcher, Bishop gives us a fast-paced and engrossing tale of the microbe hunters. It is a narrative enlivened by vivid anecdotes about our deadliest microbial enemies--the Black Death, cholera, syphilis, tuberculosis, malaria, smallpox, HIV--and by biographical sketches of the scientists who led the fight against these scourges. Bishop then provides an introduction for nonscientists to the molecular underpinnings of cancer and concludes with an analysis of many of today's most important science-related controversies--ranging from stem cell research to the attack on evolution to scientific misconduct. How to Win the Nobel Prize affords us the pleasure of hearing about science from a brilliant practitioner who is a humanist at heart. Bishop's perspective will be valued by anyone interested in biomedical research and in the past, present, and future of the battle against cancer. Table of Contents: List of Illustrations Preface 1. The Phone Call 2. Accidental Scientist 3. People and Pestilence 4. Opening the Black Box of Cancer 5. Paradoxical Strife Notes Credits Index Reviews of this book: Despite his book's encouraging title, Bishop--who won a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1989--cautions that "I have not written an instruction manual for pursuit of the prize." Instead, he has written an amiable reflection on the experience of being a Nobelist, intertwined with some history and anecdotes about the award, and balanced by a wide-ranging review of his own career as an "accidental scientist"...Along the way, Bishop reflects on the history of our knowledge of microbes, cancer, the politics of funding research and present-day disenchantment with science. His main purpose in writing this book, Bishop says, is to show that "scientists are supremely human"--which he does with grace and charm. --Publishers Weekly Reviews of this book: How to Win the Nobel Prize is typical Bishop: modest, funny, insightful and offering an extremely clear and brief explanation of the basic scientific achievement that won the 1989 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for himself and longtime colleague, Harold Varmus, now president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. --David Perlman, San Francisco Chronicle Reviews of this book: In these pages Bishop reveals himself as a good writer blessed with enviable clarity, someone sensible and levelheaded who likes people and is enamored of his science. --John Tyler Bonner, New York Times Book Review Reviews of this book: This is a treasure...Above all, How to Win the Nobel Prize is a civilised book and a lavishly rewarding one. --Roy Herbert, New Scientist Reviews of this book: At its heart this analysis of science and the scientific world is a jewel. How to Win the Nobel Prize is an inspirational book, full of careful analysis and judgement. --John Oxford, Times Higher Education Supplement Reviews of this book: Bishop is a gifted communicator and teacher, and he sets about his task of educating scientists and the public by describing his career in science and science politics...In the end, Bishop's book provides a road map for scientists and the public to build a robust scientific community that serves our society well. --Andreas Trumpp and Daniel Kalman, Nature Cell Biology J. Michael Bishop has written his book 'to show that scientists are supremely human.' The book is also a lucid explanation of how science has been harnessed to fight the human afflictions of cancer and infectious disease. And the story ends with a wide-ranging overview of today's challenges to the scientific enterprise. Overall, a must-read for all those interested in science and scientists--even those with absolutely no interest in winning a Nobel Prize! --Bruce Alberts, President, National Academy of Sciences J. Michael Bishop is that rare scientist who is widely read in literature and poetry. Most importantly, he remembers what he reads and thinks deeply about it, as well as about all else in his rich life. The Nobel Prize he won and richly deserved, his political activism, his understanding of cancer and microbiology, his devotion to the practice of science--all these provide fodder for his writerly craft. Quite a wonderful book! --David Baltimore, Nobel Laureate and President, California Institute of Technology
