Book excerpt: When 14-year-old Cole Davis is diagnosed with leukemia, he and his circle of family and friends are all thrust into the long, difficult journey of pediatric cancer. Uniquely written from the perspective of both mother and son, this story details the battles of a teenager fighting the traumatic illness. It gives the reader a peak inside to gain understanding and insight into the plight cancer families endure every day. Laura Davis touches on the harshness of being a mom of a teen boy whose life has been threatened, the trouble of drug shortages, and the need for support and encouragement that all parents of childhood cancer patients share. Cole sheds light on the challenges teens face in a children's hospital where furniture is built for small children and most of the programs and events are child-like. Not yet an adult, but no longer a child, teens with cancer are an often overlooked, underserved community in oncology. This book is a must-read for families fighting cancer and an important resource for anyone struggling through life circumstances that seem impossible. Cole and Laura learned an important lesson through his leukemia and they hope to share it with the world: Whatever troubles life throws at you, take it all ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Book The Undying

Download or read book The Undying written by Anne Boyer and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 PULITZER PRIZE IN GENERAL NONFICTION "The Undying is a startling, urgent intervention in our discourses about sickness and health, art and science, language and literature, and mortality and death. In dissecting what she terms 'the ideological regime of cancer,' Anne Boyer has produced a profound and unforgettable document on the experience of life itself." —Sally Rooney, author of Normal People "Anne Boyer’s radically unsentimental account of cancer and the 'carcinogenosphere' obliterates cliche. By demonstrating how her utterly specific experience is also irreducibly social, she opens up new spaces for thinking and feeling together. The Undying is an outraged, beautiful, and brilliant work of embodied critique." —Ben Lerner, author of The Topeka School A week after her forty-first birthday, the acclaimed poet Anne Boyer was diagnosed with highly aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. For a single mother living paycheck to paycheck who had always been the caregiver rather than the one needing care, the catastrophic illness was both a crisis and an initiation into new ideas about mortality and the gendered politics of illness. A twenty-first-century Illness as Metaphor, as well as a harrowing memoir of survival, The Undying explores the experience of illness as mediated by digital screens, weaving in ancient Roman dream diarists, cancer hoaxers and fetishists, cancer vloggers, corporate lies, John Donne, pro-pain ”dolorists,” the ecological costs of chemotherapy, and the many little murders of capitalism. It excoriates the pharmaceutical industry and the bland hypocrisies of ”pink ribbon culture” while also diving into the long literary line of women writing about their own illnesses and ongoing deaths: Audre Lorde, Kathy Acker, Susan Sontag, and others. A genre-bending memoir in the tradition of The Argonauts, The Undying will break your heart, make you angry enough to spit, and show you contemporary America as a thing both desperately ill and occasionally, perversely glorious. Includes black-and-white illustrations

Book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient

Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michele's stories chronicle the rollercoaster of feelings she experienced as a breast cancer patient. She says that her stories are raw emotion--no fluff! At diagnosis, everyone told Michele that her life would be better after her cancer journey. She exclaimed loudly that her life was "just fine" before cancer, and she doubted she needed this experience to make her appreciate life and her many blessings. Michele is a wife, mother of three, and first grade teacher. She spent most of her school year fighting cancer. It was what she describes as her own personal kind of awful. While Michele's story has a happy ending, it wasn't without a lot of pain, discomfort, sickness, sadness, and more jelly donuts than she cares to admit. She said that she made it through the difficult moments because of faith, family, friends, a wonderful medical team, and her sister's incredible advice to take everything just "one day at a time."
