Book Promise Me

Download or read book Promise Me written by Nancy G. Brinker and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suzy and Nancy Goodman were more than sisters. They were best friends, confidantes, and partners in the grand adventure of life. For three decades, nothing could separate them. Not college, not marriage, not miles. Then Suzy got sick. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977; three agonizing years later, at thirty-six, she died. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. The Goodman girls were raised in postwar Peoria, Illinois, by parents who believed that small acts of charity could change the world. Suzy was the big sister—the homecoming queen with an infectious enthusiasm and a generous heart. Nancy was the little sister—the tomboy with an outsized sense of justice who wanted to right all wrongs. The sisters shared makeup tips, dating secrets, plans for glamorous fantasy careers. They spent one memorable summer in Europe discovering a big world far from Peoria. They imagined a long life together—one in which they’d grow old together surrounded by children and grandchildren. Suzy’s diagnosis shattered that dream. In 1977, breast cancer was still shrouded in stigma and shame. Nobody talked about early detection and mammograms. Nobody could even say the words “breast” and “cancer” together in polite company, let alone on television news broadcasts. With Nancy at her side, Suzy endured the many indignities of cancer treatment, from the grim, soul-killing waiting rooms to the mistakes of well-meaning but misinformed doctors. That’s when Suzy began to ask Nancy to promise. To promise to end the silence. To promise to raise money for scientific research. To promise to one day cure breast cancer for good. Big, shoot-for-the-moon promises that Nancy never dreamed she could fulfill. But she promised because this was her beloved sister. I promise, Suzy. . . . Even if it takes the rest of my life. Suzy’s death—both shocking and senseless—created a deep pain in Nancy that never fully went away. But she soon found a useful outlet for her grief and outrage. Armed only with a shoebox filled with the names of potential donors, Nancy put her formidable fund-raising talents to work and quickly discovered a groundswell of grassroots support. She was aided in her mission by the loving tutelage of her husband, restaurant magnate Norman Brinker, whose dynamic approach to entrepreneurship became Nancy’s model for running her foundation. Her account of how she and Norman met, fell in love, and managed to achieve the elusive “true marriage of equals” is one of the great grown-up love stories among recent memoirs. Nancy’s mission to change the way the world talked about and treated breast cancer took on added urgency when she was herself diagnosed with the disease in 1984, a terrifying chapter in her life that she had long feared. Unlike her sister, Nancy survived and went on to make Susan G. Komen for the Cure into the most influential health charity in the country and arguably the world. A pioneering force in cause-related marketing, SGK turned the pink ribbon into a symbol of hope everywhere. Each year, millions of people worldwide take part in SGK Race for the Cure events. And thanks to the more than $1.5 billion spent by SGK for cutting-edge research and community programs, a breast cancer diagnosis today is no longer a death sentence. In fact, in the time since Suzy’s death, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has risen from 74 percent to 98 percent. Promise Me is a deeply moving story of family and sisterhood, the dramatic “30,000-foot view” of the democratization of a disease, and a soaring affirmative to the question: Can one person truly make a difference?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one family member has cancer, the whole family has cancer. This is not just another story of a family's victory over cancer. The intent of the author sharing her story is to give practical suggestions to patients and their family and friends on how to help. Returning home from successful treatment in 2005, Darlene consistently receives calls, emails, and visits from people who are newly diagnosed and from the patient's family and friends who want to know how to help their loved one. They ask her: What can I do? What should I say? Included are suggestions for the patient on how to battle not only the disease but also the onslaught of fear and anxiety that accompanies a diagnosis such as cancer. Although every case of cancer is unique and each family is different, Darlene has found that there are some universal dos and don'ts for those who find themselves in this battle: Motivate yourself for the fight. Create ways others may join in. Learn how to encourage and help those battling cancer.

Book Thanks for the Mammaries

Download or read book Thanks for the Mammaries written by Kate Gale and published by Ocean Reeve Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks for the Mammaries is an honest recount of author Kate Gale's journey with cancer. After being diagnosed at the young age of twenty-seven with breast cancer, she fought a hard, uphill battle, stared it in the eye, and won. Life was getting back to normal when tragedy struck Kate's young family again, when her husband was diagnosed with renal cancer five years later. What followed was the biggest curveball that Kate had been handed to date when roles were reversed, and she was sitting on the other side of a cancer diagnosis. It opened her eyes to life, what was important, who was important, and which direction she wanted to go in. Kate had now seen both sides of the disease, from two different perspectives, and knew that she had to break down the barriers that surrounded cancer. Her positive, inspiring, and honest attitude towards her battles are not only refreshing, but something that will leave you wondering what is important to you. Kate shows you how dreaming big, giving back, and having a never give up kind of attitude can turn a negative into a positive whilst continuing to smile.

Book excerpt: I will always and forever feel I have a 'hole' in my life where my mother once existed. I think, when you have to think about the fact you might have to take care of your parents someday and juggle kids at the same timeIt's a scary proposition. We had open communication during and before the breast cancer. But then after the breast cancer, I was often afraid to bring things up, in trying to protect Mom. This insightful book tells the stories of women whose mothers had breast cancer. It uses their own voices to express the common fears and expectations of daughters in the periods before and during their mothers' illnesses, involving genetic risks, death and dying, and changes in their relationships. The case studies, tables and figures, and two appendices will benefit health professionals and counselors, while the poignant narratives will help mothers and daughters better understand their experiences with breast cancer. I was kind of surprised to be alive and free of cancer at age 42, when at this point my mother was crippled by metastases. When I get to be 43the age at which my mother died, or maybe when I get to 44it's like, 'what do I do?' I have this life that I didn't expect to have. Breast Cancer: Daughters Tell Their Stories presents the results of a qualitative, grounded theory study of breast cancer survivors, providing in-depth information about an aspect of breast cancer that has been previously overlooked. The book examines the daughters' experiences through four phasesthe period prior to mother's illness, the period during mother's illness and treatment, the period following mother's death (if mother dies), and the long-term impact. From this study, recommendations are compiled for providing or improving services for tomorrow's daughters. The radical mastectomy left her scarred and disfigured below her nightgown. It was bruised and nasty looking. That was kind of scary. I think that has terrified me since. Sometimes I'll have pains in my left breast and that's what I visualize. It's terrifying. I'm not really obsessed about dying of cancer. I'm more along the line of, 'If this is going to happen to me, and there's a chance it's going to, I'm gonna survive. I'm not going to die from it. From an empathetic perspective, this book reveals how many daughters react to and deal with their mothers' diagnoses, depending on their age and family situation at the time of their mothers' illnesses. It shows how daughters can gain a more accurate idea of their level of risk by providing educational materials and developing new strategies for communication. It also helps breast cancer survivors see how their illnesses can shape their daughters' future outlook, offering new inspiration for resolving and preventing family crises.

Download or read book Not Now Cancer I m Busy written by Melissa Trevathan-Minnis and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis Are you or is someone you love facing a cancer diagnosis in the prime of life? You’re not alone. The likelihood of developing cancer in one’s lifetime is 1 in 2 for males and 1 in 3 for females, and the numbers are rising. A cancer diagnosis at any age is traumatic, but young to middle-aged adults who are often raising or planning for children, establishing careers, and getting on their financial feet face unique challenges. When cancer strikes, this group can become overwhelmed by navigating treatment options, mounting debt from medical bills, threats to fertility, and the necessity of facing one’s mortality. It can become a mental battle ground. In Not Now, Cancer, I’m Busy, Melissa Trevathan-Minnis and Deanne Meeks Brown offer research, resources, and support to help you overcome the psychological trauma of cancer. Sharing their own personal stories, along with insights from other young cancer survivors, these two mental health professionals guide you through the rollercoaster of emotions from diagnosis and treatment to transitioning back to life post-treatment. While the challenges of cancer survivorship are many, so are the coping strategies available to help promote recovery and well-being. Not Now, Cancer, I’m Busy, addresses cancer through the lens of mental health and offers strategies to not only cope with the challenges of cancer, but to build a life full of meaning and intention despite them. From developing a fighting spirit and learning how to slow down, to breaking down barriers to mental health and spiritual growth, this book will help you tap into your personal strengths and resilience. Although a cancer diagnosis in early and midlife can be earth-shattering, the trauma of cancer can actually leave you stronger and better equipped-if you let it. WORDS OF PRAISE OMG! This is a fabulous book--the one everyone dealing with cancer has been waiting for! While the book is specifically addressed to YMAs (Young and Middle Adults) it is an exhaustive compendium of experience, issues, and directions for all those touched in any way by cancer—victims, survivors, family, friends and the rest of us who care in one way or another. From diagnosis to survivorship or to disability and death Melissa and Deanne offer amazingly comprehensive research, suggestions, and enlightenment at every step of the journey they take us on. Most interesting to me as a psychologist-psychoanalyst and survivor of cancer at age 21 are the sections on post-traumatic growth, developing a personal narrative, and the progression from surviving to thriving. Not Now, Cancer is an absolute triumph by two people who artfully weave their personal thriving experiences of themselves and of their families and friends with a wealth of incredible details of their cancer experiences that are equally well applicable to people of all ages who are faced with life-threatening diagnoses or circumstances. Congratulations Melissa and Deanne and thanks. --Lawrence Hedges, PhD, PsyD, ABPP, Director, the Listening Perspectives Study Center

Book Still Bigger Than Pink

Download or read book Still Bigger Than Pink written by Csp Mirm Lori Lober and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conclusion On January 2, 2009, I saw my oncologist for my annual scans. While I am confident in my wellness and feel better than I have ever felt, I cannot help but be a bit nervous each time the tests are run. I am alive and well with great news! All are clear and I remain "no evidence of disease"! I know dedication to self-care and my new IsAgenix regimen are working to create balance in my body allowing for optimum healing! My doctors cannot give me definite answers as to why my treatments have been successful when others have failed, or even why I'm still alive and thriving now, NINE years after my stage IV, metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. However, they have said many times that I "am a very proactive patient." Of course, being proactive does not guarantee success and long-term survival - unfortunately, there are no guarantees. However, I feel that truly believing that I was not going to die, most certainly was an important factor. In addition to that, my faith, the support of my family and friends, the combination of everything discussed in this book, and yes, a little luck, have all contributed to my long-term survival. Prior to being diagnosed with cancer, I would not necessarily have considered myself an extraordinarily lucky person. Now, however, the quality of life I live every day is much richer, the special moments more memorable, and the love I have to offer both to myself as well as to others, is deeper and more fulfilling. This is precisely why I tell everyone I meet that I feel "blessed" to have actually had cancer, and I continue to be deeply grateful to now be healthy and happy. Journey well! Lori C. Book The Cancer Whisperer

Download or read book The Cancer Whisperer written by Sophie Sabbage and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The self-published sensation and UK bestseller that has helped thousands touched by cancer. “I have cancer. Cancer does not have me.” Sophie Sabbage was forty-eight years old, happily married, and mother to a four-year-old daughter when she was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. Since that shocking diagnosis, she has been on a remarkable journey of healing and renewal that has reshaped her life—for the better. The Cancer Whisperer chronicles Sophie’s extraordinary relationship with cancer and the very effective methods she has used for dealing with her fear, anger, denial, and grief. The Brené Brown of cancer, Sophie empowers readers to reject the traditional adversarial relationship with cancer by teaching us how to listen to it; how to be healed by it as well as how to seek to cure it; and how to be emotionally free even when we are physically curtailed. Beautifully and poignantly written, The Cancer Whisperer encourages cancer patients to: • Direct their own treatment while preserving their personhood in a system that tends to see them as patients more than people. • Engage with fear, anger, and grief in healthy and healing ways instead of toughing it out, trying to be falsely positive, or collapsing into despair. • Radically shift from being a cancer victim to a cancer listener—fostering an understanding of cancer as a symptom of other underlying causes and engaging with whatever changes it calls on them to make. As authentic as it is revolutionary, The Cancer Whisperer calls for an end to “the war on cancer” and the start of a more transformative dialogue with the disease.

Download or read book The C Word written by Flora Denton and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is me – talking to you. It’s not grammatically correct – I fragment a lot. It probably has some errors – I’m not perfect and neither is this book. It certainly is not politically correct and may even offend some people. I tell it like it is, as I have always done. You rarely have to wonder where I stand on something – I have an opinion on almost everything. I have written this in my style – like I’m sitting next to you in the same room telling you my story. I was diagnosed with Stage III cancer in November, 2008. I experienced a short period of remission until my Stage IV – terminal diagnosis in February, 2010. This book covers the period of my initial diagnosis to where I am now in May, 2010. Cancer is a dirty word! I have accepted that I will probably die from cancer. I have not accepted that my life is over. This book is intended as a gift. A gift from me to the reader. I’m not telling anyone how to do this or that they should handle it the way I am approaching it. It’s just my story of how I am dealing with it and attempting to turn devastation into opportunity. Every dollar we bring in with the sale of this book will go towards my dream project – My Sister’s Place, Too – a transitional housing program for women and children who have made the decision to leave their abusive situations and start a new life. There is a chapter devoted to this project. You can help me achieve my dream by purchasing this book for yourself or better yet as a thoughtful gift for anyone on the cancer journey.
