Book excerpt: Henry Dove, of Virginia, was granted a quarter section (160 acres) of land in Canal Winchester, Ohio, around 1802 and moved his family there in 1811. Prior to his death, Dove divided his land equally between his two sons, Reuben and Jacob. In 1827, the Ohio and Erie Canal was routed through Reuben Dove's wheat field. After protesting the proposed canal route, Reuben threatened to sue the state. Canal workers suggested that Reuben plat a town and sell lots, and in 1828, Reuben--along with John Colman--did so. They named the town Winchester, since Reuben's father had lived in Winchester, Virginia. Benefiting from the area's fertile soil, canal, railroad, interurban, and roadways, Canal Winchester, Ohio, would grow and thrive as an agricultural community.

The conception of this work dates back some twelve years, when the writer was persuaded to prepare a condensed narrative history of Madison township, to go into Captain A. E. Lee's History of Columbus, Ohio. Later plans suggested the publication in separate form, and this volume is the result. To compile a history a century after the first settlement was made is no easy task, especially so when the time required must be snatched from a busy life. Three generations have lived and gone to the great beyond since then. Not only has the wolf, the bear, the deer, the wild-turkey, the Indian, the pioneer cabin, and all the associations of those good old days gone forever from view, but even the pioneers themselves are all gone - not one remains to tell the story of the hardships endured in their solitary lives in the great woods. Very few even of those who had the privilege of hearing from the first settlers' own lips the story of their struggle to subdue the wilderness, are living. Book excerpt: A fascinating history of the Ohio and Erie Canal, from a national leader in agricultural output to a recreational resource. George Washington first proposed the idea of a canal connecting the Great Lakes to the Ohio-Mississippi River System in 1784. Inspired by the Erie Canal in New York, the State of Ohio began surveying routes in 1822 for its own grand internal improvement project. Completed a decade later, the 309-mile-long Ohio and Erie Canal connected Cleveland, Akron, Massillon, Dover, Roscoe, Newark, Columbus, Circleville, Chillicothe, Waverly, and Portsmouth. Success was immediate, as this vital transportation link provided access to Eastern markets. Within a span of 35 years, canals transformed Ohio from a rural frontier wilderness into the nation's leader in agricultural output and third most populous state by 1860. Railroads marked the end of the canal as an economic engine, but traffic continued to operate until the Great Flood of 1913 destroyed the system as a commercial enterprise. Today, the Ohio and Erie Canal is enjoying a rebirth as a recreational resource.
