Book excerpt: One Canadian in eight volunteered to fight between 1914 and 1918 and more than half of them were enlisted. Soldiers left their families behind to the tender mercy of a tight-fisted government and the Canadian Patriotic Fund, a national charity dominated by its wealthy donors. In time, the soldiers were remembered as the sacrificial heroes who won Canada a respected place in the world. The women who paid in loneliness and poverty were as easily forgotten as their letters, soaked in blood and Flanders mud. Fight or Pay tells the story of what happened to the soldiers' families and their quiet contributions to a fairer deal for Canadians in peace and war.

Book The British Empire and the First World War

Download or read book The British Empire and the First World War written by Ashley Jackson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Empire played a crucial part in the First World War, supplying hundreds of thousands of soldiers and labourers as well as a range of essential resources, from foodstuffs to minerals, mules, and munitions. In turn, many imperial territories were deeply affected by wartime phenomena, such as inflation, food shortages, combat, and the presence of large numbers of foreign troops. This collection offers a comprehensive selection of essays illuminating the extent of the Empire’s war contribution and experience, and the richness of scholarly research on the subject. Whether supporting British military operations, aiding the British imperial economy, or experiencing significant wartime effects on the home fronts of the Empire, the war had a profound impact on the colonies and their people. The chapters in this volume were originally published in Australian Historical Studies, The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, First World War Studies or The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs.

Book Unwanted Warriors

  • Publisher : UBC Press

  • ISBN : 0774828919
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Unwanted Warriors written by Nic Clarke and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwanted Warriors uncovers the history of Canada’s first casualties of the Great War – men who tried to enlist but were deemed “unfit for service” by medical examiners. Condemned as shirkers for not being in uniform, rejected volunteers faced severe ostracism. Nagging guilt, coupled with self-doubt about their social and physical worth, led many of these men to divorce themselves from society ... or worse. Nic Clarke draws on the service files of 3,400 rejected volunteers to examine the deleterious effects that socially constructed norms of health and fitness had on individual men and Canadian society. He considers the mechanics of the military medical examination, the psychical and psychological characteristics that the authorities believed made a fighting man, and how evaluations changed as the war dragged on. He also brings to light the experiences of those who deliberately claimed disability to avoid service – a minority within the large population of rejected volunteers who felt denigrated, if not emasculated, by their exclusion from duty.

Book Bibliographie de la Vie Militaire Au Canada 1867 1995

Download or read book Bibliographie de la Vie Militaire Au Canada 1867 1995 written by O. A. Cooke and published by Directorate of History and Heritage, Department of National Defence = Direction--Histoire et patrimoine, Ministère de la défense nationale. This book was released on 1997 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian military history and military matters have not been well represented in general in retrospective bibliographies of Canadian or in international military bibliographies. What has been attempted in this document is a bibliography of published primary sources and secondary works on Canadian military topics, excluding poetry and fiction, covering the period from Confederation to the present. Entries in the bibliography represent printed monographs, books and pamphlets, and serial titles. The prime criteria of inclusion were that the work be chiefly or uniquely both Canadian and military in its contents. Many in-house publications, of the training pamphlet or regulations type, have been included, but only insofar as they tell us something of the armed forces themselves, rather than details of tactical doctrine or of pieces of equipment. Works by or about Canadians serving with the armed forces of other countries have been included, as well as materials relating to the military history of Newfoundland since 1867.
