Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction What is a pig? What kinds of pigs are there? Where did pigs come from? The history of pigs and humans Babirusas (also known as pig-deer) Pot-belled pigs Red river hogs Wild Boars Feral Pigs Peccaries Warthogs Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Pigs have long been a part of human life. The ancient Israelites considered them unclean animals, and would not eat them; however, many, many cultures consider them a great source of food. The pig is present in the Chinese zodiac, a way of keeping track of years by assigning twelve animals, one to each year. It’s also said to predict traits and such about people born in those years. It’s the twelfth sign, because, according to legend, the pig showed up last to the great meeting where the animals were assigned to a system. The pig has long been a sign of gluttony, especially in Western culture. In the book Animal Farm, they greedily consume the best of the food, and do almost none of the work. Pigs are considered dirty, but the fact is, they tend to be very clean animals. They do consume a lot of food, but not all pigs are fat; it’s mostly domesticated (bred to serve humans) pigs that are as obese-looking as you see in the modern day. They are very interesting creatures.

Download or read book Little Horse of Iron written by Lawrence Scanlan and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part history, part memoir, this tale of Canada’s heritage horse is a moving odyssey into the past — and one man’s heart. Saving what’s left of our history often falls to a passionate few. This is the case with a group of horse breeders who have pledged to re-establish Canada’s heritage horse, aptly called the Canadian — a breed descended from the Norman horses that took European knights into battle. Habitants of old Quebec called this uncommonly strong breed le petit cheval de fer — the little horse of iron — and in many ways the tumultuous story of this horse mirrors the history of Canada. Little Horse of Iron tells the story of one man and his horse. At the age of 50, Lawrence Scanlan bought his first horse — a Canadian called Saroma Dark Fox Dali. A spirited and untrained young Canadian gelding, Dali taught Scanlan a great deal about patience, fear and courage. Always candid and often amusing, the year-long diary of their relationship deftly explores the joys and sorrows as both horse and human struggle to trust and understand each other. Along the way, we meet the people who prize the Canadian horse’s unparalleled contributions over three centuries — on the family farm, on the battlefield, on the race track and in the show ring. Marvellously detailed and rich in character, Little Horse of Iron is a heart-warming celebration of one horse, and of his breed — Canada’s own.

And like most animals they come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The American Museum of Natural History says horses have been “racing around…for more than 50 million years.” That’s a very long time! At first horses were wild and free. But around 6,000 years ago, we made them a part of our lives. And as time went on, more than 200 breeds were created. Some sources say it’s more than 400! These domesticated horses worked on farms, hitched to wagons, carried loads and helped on the battlefield. And today, they still make up a large part of our lives. In 2007, an online article by Horsetalk.co.nz says there are more than 58 million horses in the world! Did you know that? In this book, we will talk about a few horse breeds you might fight strange. And if you do know about them, perhaps you may discover something new. Are you ready to get started? Then look at the names of these courageous animals before we begin: 1-American Cream 2-Caspian 3-Cleveland Bay 4-Colonial Spanish 5-Hackney 6-Newfoundland Pony 7-Shire 8-Suffolk Punch 9-Akhal – Teke 10-Canadian Do you know any of these horse breeds and what makes them different from the others? It’s not only their shiny coat, strong legs or loving personality. But each horse offers something special. Some are very tame and others run very fast. Some are elegant and strong and sturdy. Others are great with kids. These amazing animals can teach us a lot about being good friends and taking care of each other. Horses are also very smart. How smart? The following poem may give you an idea!

Book Harness Horses Bucking Broncos Pit Ponies

Download or read book Harness Horses Bucking Broncos Pit Ponies written by Jeff Crosby and published by Tundra Books. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of years ago people living on the steppes of central Asia realized that horses could transport them long distances, help them fight their wars, pull their plows, and provide them with sport and companionship. Ever since, horses and human history have been intertwined. The author-illustrator team of Jeff Crosby and Shelley Ann Jackson celebrates all kinds of horses in this beautifully illustrated, fact-filled book. From fast horses like the Barb, which traveled to Spain from Africa in the early eighth century to become a foundation for many Spanish and European breeds, to war horses like the Mongolian that gave their owners military advantage (today there are more horses in Mongolia than there are people), to the hard-working horses ranging from the tiny American Miniature to the giant Clydesdale, Harness Horses, Bucking Broncos & Pit Ponies is a treasure-trove of information. Today there are fifty-eight million horses in the world. This is the perfect book for those who own (or dream of owning) a horse, who ride, or who simply like to read about these magnificent animals and the special relationship they share with humans.
