Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In To Serve Canada, [Preston] takes up the story of RMC (Royal Military College) as one of Canada's three military colleges and examines its development through the uncertain years of the Cold War, through the vagaries of public indifference towards defence, through the evolution of degree-granting status and the moves towards institutional bilingualism, and through the frequent Ottawa-directed re-evaluations of their roles. By chronicling the development of RMC and its sister colleges from the post-Korea period to the present, Dr Preston has provided a valuable and entertaining addition to the historical literature of this country"--Foreword, page vii-viii

Book Serving Diverse Students in Canadian Higher Education

Download or read book Serving Diverse Students in Canadian Higher Education written by Donna Hardy Cox and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the Canadian post-secondary education system has evolved to become more inclusive, now welcoming groups historically excluded from its many opportunities. Inviting the reader to explore the consequences of a rapidly changing student population, Serving Diverse Students in Canadian Higher Education presents new thinking about how education in general, and student services in particular, should be designed and delivered. A follow-up to Donna Hardy Cox and C. Carney Strange’s Achieving Student Success (2010), this volume focuses on the best programs and practices in Canadian colleges and universities to improve the educational experiences of students who are Indigenous, people of colour, francophone, LGBTQQ, disabled, and adult learners, as well as international and first-generation students. Presenting findings obtained from both personal insight and relevant research, higher education practitioners and scholars from across the country detail the characteristics, concerns, and specific needs of each diverse group, to conclude that the success of these new students and the future of Canadian society depends on its post-secondary institutions’ capacities to acknowledge students’ differences, capitalize on their gifts, and accommodate them accordingly. Exploring the enriching breadth of university communities, Serving Diverse Students in Canadian Higher Education focuses on a new paradigm of individual differences and student success.

Book excerpt: This incisive and luminescent story, scrupulously grounded in sixteenth-century sources, illuminates the power that "naming" has to create a world - in this case a world still haunted by being the accidental Indies. It is a book about how we perceive and represent the world around us, about the creative and destructive power of language. Through its elaboration of the rich and lively ironies of the Columbus story, The Accidental Indies looks at the nature of storytelling itself.

Book The Roadants of Canadian Services College Royal Roads

Download or read book The Roadants of Canadian Services College Royal Roads written by Douglas Cope and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1960s young men aged 16 to 19 from across the country, who wished to volunteer for officer training in the army, navy or air force, were selected following a rigorous screening process and sent to one of Canada's three military colleges: RMC, CMR, and Royal Roads near Victoria, British Columbia. In addition to undergoing a very demanding training regimen, those attending Canadian Services College Royal Roads had the unique experience of being the lowest of the low in their first year and the highest of the high, the cadets in charge, in their second year. This book covers one academic year and although a work of fiction, incredible as some of the stories may seem, all of the anecdotes in this book are fundamentally true. They convey the shock for the new boys at being thrust into a rigid system that gave them virtually no privacy and harassed them almost 24 hours a day and the struggles of the second year boys to adapt to their position of power. The result was a step towards manhood that none of the cadets would ever forget.

Book The Role of Community Colleges in Skills Development

Download or read book The Role of Community Colleges in Skills Development written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents key features, attributes and defining characteristics of Canadian Community Colleges and Institutes of Technology and the lessons they offer to developing countries in Asia. Internationalization initiatives of Community Colleges suggest that partnerships in skills and human capital development are possible in countries at various stages of development and are in fact the hallmark of successful global economies. The publication draws lessons from the Canadian approaches while suggesting that no model can simply be transplanted to Asia and the Pacific. Rather the Canadian approaches should inspire countries to create their own new models and practices.
