Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand the heterogeneity of post-migration labour market and educational outcomes, this article focuses on immigrants who completed post-secondary education or apprenticeship training post-admission to Canada. It uses data on immigrants who were admitted in 2010 and 2011 through an economic immigration stream, studying those admitted as principal applicants with no prior temporary permits (such as work or study permits) seven years after admission. Understanding the pathways and outcomes of this group can allow a better understanding of the labour market integration of immigrants, and the impact that Canadian education can have on their economic outcomes.

Book The Canadian Immigrant Labour Market in 2007

Download or read book The Canadian Immigrant Labour Market in 2007 written by Jason Gilmore and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an aging workforce and a low fertility rate, Canadian governments have increasingly turned to immigration as a way of trying to match the skills and knowledge with the labour market demand. Highly educated immigrants have been sought to help drive Canada's economy. In this paper the relationship between the region where an immigrant received their highest level of postsecondary education and their 2007 labour market outcomes, by time since landing, is examined. This report first examines the labour market outcomes (with a focus on employment rates) of university-educated immigrants with degrees from Canada, then those with degrees from foreign countries. Next, these results are analyzed for the three largest provincial destinations for immigrants (Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec). Finally, the labour market outcomes of immigrants with postsecondary certificates or diplomas are examined, based on where they obtained these credentials.--Document.

Book The Economics of Inequality Poverty and Discrimination in the 21st Century

Download or read book The Economics of Inequality Poverty and Discrimination in the 21st Century written by Robert S. Rycroft and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading scholars examine the conflicting paradigms of affluence and destitution in the United States—as well as other free societies—and discuss the influence of education, race, and status on economic mobility. While recent catastrophic events in New Orleans and Haiti may have magnified issues of social inequity, leaders have debated over poverty and discrimination for decades. Are the poor disadvantaged by the institutions of society or by the choices they make? Through two insightful volumes, the author examines differing academic and political perspectives to help shed light on the causes of poverty and inequality; the role that gender, race, age, or sexual preference plays in determining opportunity; and the effectiveness of current social and economic policies in balancing the inequity among disparate groups. The Economics of Inequality, Poverty, and Discrimination in the 21st Century consists of 2 volumes containing 32 papers divided into 5 categories: measurement, inequality and mobility, institutions and choices, demographic groups and discrimination, and policy. The papers—written by economists, sociologists, philosophers and lawyers—deal with the extent of inequality in the United States and how it compares to other countries, and the newly emerging evidence on the relationship between inequality and mobility within a society.

Book Canadian Immigration Policy and Immigrant Economic Outcomes

Download or read book Canadian Immigration Policy and Immigrant Economic Outcomes written by W. G. Picot and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrants to Canada enjoy labour market outcomes that are more favourable than those for their counterparts in Sweden. In an effort to understand these gaps, Canada's immigration policy and outcomes are contrasted to the Swedish immigration experience. The nature of immigration and structural differences involving the domestic labour markets are hypothesized to provide plausible explanations for at least some of the gap. Additionally, there are dynamic issues related to, for instance, the timing of immigrant entry with respect to the business cycle, and changes in the rates of immigration flows, that may have some impact on labour market outcomes and explain some short- to medium-term aspects of the gap in outcomes. On the other hand, common trends are also observed; both unemployment and earnings outcomes among entering immigrants have deteriorated significantly in Canada since the 1980s, as they have in many western countries including Sweden.
