Book Canadian Minor League Baseball

Download or read book Canadian Minor League Baseball written by Jon C. Stott and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 75 seasons of baseball (1946-2020), 71 teams in 21 minor leagues represented 35 Canadian cities, playing either under the aegis of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (called Minor League Baseball since 1999) or independently. Sixteen teams operated for less than a year, including the eight teams of the Canadian Baseball League of 2003. Another 14 lasted three seasons or less. Seven have played continuously for 20 years or more, among them the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the independent Northern League and American Association, with 27 consecutive seasons since 1994. Chronicling their year-by-year fortunes, this history includes accounts of individual award winners, former Negro League players and future Hall-of-Famers, and traces of the rise and fall of independent league teams and the exodus of Canadian teams to the U.S.

Book The Tecumsehs of the International Association

Download or read book The Tecumsehs of the International Association written by Brian Martin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the previously untold story of the London Tecumsehs, an 1870s baseball team that rose to the top ranks of pro ball. The Tecumsehs of London, Ontario, were among the founding members of the International Association in 1877, the first league established to challenge the struggling National League, formed a year earlier. The team played against the top competition of the day and defeated nines from Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere. They became the first champions of the International Association when they defeated Pittsburgh with the arm of Fred Goldsmith, one of the first curveball pitchers. This is also the story of the International Association, the only one of the six leagues challenging the primacy of the National League that has never been accorded major league status. To this day it has been relegated to minor league status to the detriment of some of the pioneer players in the game.

Book excerpt: In the spirit of Moneyball, the voice of the Toronto Blue Jays offers cutting insights on baseball Buck Martinez has been in and around professional baseball for nearly fifty years as a player, manager and broadcaster. Currently the play-by-play announcer for the Toronto Blue Jays, Martinez has witnessed enormous change in the game he loves, as it has morphed from a grassroots pastime to big business. Not all of the change has been for the better, and today’s fans struggle to connect to their on-the-field heroes as loyalty to club and player wavers and free agency constantly changes the face of every team’s roster. In Change Up, Martinez offers his unique insights into how Major League Baseball might reconnect with its fanbase, how the clubs might train and prepare their players for their time in “The Show,” and how players might approach the sport in a time of sagging fan interest. Martinez isn’t shy with his opinions, whether they be on pitch count, how to develop players through the minor-league system, and even if there should be a minor-league system at all. Always entertaining, ever insightful, Martinez shares brilliant insights and inside pitches about summer’s favourite game.

Book Ed Barrow

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel R. Levitt
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2010-03-01
  • ISBN : 080322981X
  • Pages : 456 pages

Download or read book Ed Barrow written by Daniel R. Levitt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the feuding owners turned to Ed Barrow to be general manager in 1920, the Yankees had never won a pennant. They won their first in 1921 and during Barrow?s tenure went on to win thirteen more as well as ten World Series. This biography of the incomparable Barrow is also the story of how he built the most successful sports franchise in American history. øBarrow spent fifty years in baseball. He was in the middle of virtually every major conflict and held practically every job except player. Daniel R. Levitt describes Barrow?s pre-Yankees years, when he managed Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox to their last World Series Championship before the ?curse.? He then details how Barrow assembled a winning Yankees team both by purchasing players outright and by developing talent through a farm system. øThe story of the making of the great Yankees dynasty reveals Barrow?s genius for organizing, for recognizing baseball talent, and for exploiting the existing economic environment. Because Barrow was a player in so many of baseball?s key events, his biography gives a clear and eye-opening picture of how America?s sport was played in the twentieth century, on the field and off. A complex portrait of a larger-than-life character in the annals of baseball, this book is also an inside history of how the sport?s competitive environment evolved and how the Yankees came to dominate it.
