Book Canadian Labour Relations in an Era of Technological Change

Download or read book Canadian Labour Relations in an Era of Technological Change written by Jean Réal Cardin and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: This study will attempt to evaluate the contribution of current labour relations in Canada to solving the problems of manpower adjustment to technological and other changes. The paper will deal with weaknesses in the present situation, and suggest certain institutional means that may improve the quality of this contribution ... The basic hyposthesis of this survey is that our system of labour relations, because of its ideology and because of the functions performed by the parties to this system (enterprises, unions, public authorities), has not been successful, up to now, in permitting the introduction of an effective manpower policy; and that progress towards certain better-adapted forms of meeting and of dialogue among labour, management and governments, intended to assist or extend traditional collective bargaining, could be of great importance in changing people's points of view in this field.

Book Collective Bargaining Over Technological Change in Canada

Download or read book Collective Bargaining Over Technological Change in Canada written by Jonathan C. Peirce and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worker involvement in the technological change process can take many forms. This paper emphasizes the type of involvement afforded by formal collective bargaining in order to discover how frequently certain key technological change clauses occur in Canadian agreements and whether the incidence of these types of clauses has changed appreciably over time with particular reference to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the federal jurisdiction where technological change legislation is in force. Also discussed is the concern that more than half of Canada's workers are not unionized, suggesting the need for supplemental policy approaches to formal agreements that would include all workers.

Book Technological Change in the Auto Industry

Download or read book Technological Change in the Auto Industry written by David Robertson and published by Willowdale, Ont. : CAW/TCA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the auto industry is going through the most radical restructuring it has experienced since its birth. Included in this upheaval is a dramatic reorganization of the workplace, and technology has been both a catalyst and a central part of such change. The issues involved touch every facet of workplace life: job classifications and demarcation lines; seniority rules and transfer rights; teamwork and production standards; health and safety and the work environment; new skills and the content of retraining; the erosion of bargaining units and the degree of supervision; relations among workers and relations between workers, their unions, and management. The study reported in this paper by the Canadian Auto Workers union used a survey, case studies, and roundtables at seven auto industry plants in Canada to define what is happening in the workplace in terms of technological change. Extensive use of quotations from these sources is made throughout the report. The report is composed of six chapters that cover the following issues: (1) the new technology; (2) disappearing jobs; (3) transformation of work; (4) the new management agenda; (5) labor and technological change; and (6) policy implications for labor. Definitions of technical terms are provided. (KC)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Employment and Social Policy Volume 56 Digitalization, far from being solely a technological issue, has broad implications in the social, labour, and economic spheres. It leads to dangers as well as to new chances for the workforce, and thus labour law must develop effective ways to both protect workers and allow them to profit from new technological developments. The most thorough book of its kind, this collection of expert essays provides an abundance of well-thought-out material for understanding the consequences of digitalization for the labour market and industrial relations. Recognizing that only an international perspective can make it possible to face the challenges of the present (and the future), renowned authorities from the International Labour Organization and the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law, as well as outstanding labour law professors, examine in depth such salient issues as the following: transformation of production systems; the spread of artificial intelligence; precariousness and exploitation in the gig economy; lessons learned from COVID-19; employment status of platform workers; new cross-border issues; rights to trade union association and collective bargaining; role of the State in the new digital labour market; and blurred lines between work and private life. Thanks to the international team of contributors, the issues are dealt with from a variety of overlapping perspectives and points of view, combining aspects of labour law, commercial law, corporate governance, and international law. Highlighting the need to adapt, especially through the right to training, work, and professionalism with respect to the new technological landscape, the book draws on legislative, judicial, and theoretical initiatives suggesting ways of responding positively to the requests for protection that arise in the new forms of production. A uniquely valuable tool for study and reflection for policymakers and academics, the book is also sure to be valued by entrepreneurs, managers, consultants, corporate lawyers, judges, human rights experts, and trade unionists who are interested in the issues of labour, industrial relations, and social rights in European and international contexts.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognition of the contribution of technological change to economic growth has grown steadily in the latter half of the 20th century. That has spawned a large body of literature concerned with identifying the factors associated with the generation and spread of technological change. Little attention, however, has been given in the innovation literature to the "people side" of the equation, that is, to how organizations themselves have to adapt to technological change. These concerns have had a higher profile in other fields of research, such as organizational development and human resource management. This paper examines the links between computer-based technological and organizational change. The link is examined empirically using a longitudinal database on the innovation behaviour of Canadian businesses over two periods -- 1980-85 and 1986-91. The evidence shows that as the use of computer-based technologies deepens within firms, the level of organizational innovation increases. However, while technological change may stimulate organizational innovation, much of that innovation does not appear to be successful in the long-term

Book On the Job

  • Release : 1986-01-01
  • ISBN : 077356134X

Download or read book On the Job written by Craig Heron and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume enhance our understanding of Canadians on the job. Focusing on specific industries and kinds of work, from logging and longshoring to restaurant work and the needle trades, the contributors consider such issues as job skill, mass production, and the transformation of resource industries. They raise questions about how particular jobs are structured and changed over time, the role of workers' resistance and trade unions in shaping the lives of workers, and the impact of technology. Together these essays clarify a fundamental characteristic shared by all labour processes: they are shaped and conditioned by the social, economic, and political struggles of labour and capital both inside and outside the workplace. They argue that technological change, as well as all the transformations in the workplace, must become a social process that we all control.
