Book Canadian Imports and Trade Issues

Download or read book Canadian Imports and Trade Issues written by Mathew B. Reynolds and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and Canada maintain the world's largest trading relationship, one that has been strengthened during the past fifteen years by the approval of two multilateral free trade agreements. Although commercial disputes may not be quite as prominent now as they have been in the past, the two countries in recent years have engaged in difficult negotiations over items in several trade sectors, including natural resources, agricultural commodities, and the cultural/entertainment industry. However, these disputes affect but a small percentage of the total goods and services exchanged. Also, the United States and Canada work together closely on environmental matters, including monitoring solid waste transfers, and protecting and maintaining the quality of border waterways. This new book explores specific issues related to trade between these two countries.

Book The Provinces and Canadian Foreign Trade Policy

Download or read book The Provinces and Canadian Foreign Trade Policy written by Christopher J. Kukucha and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past thirty years, international trade agreements have focused increasingly on areas of provincial jurisdiction. In The Provinces and Canadian Foreign Trade Policy, Kukucha argues that Canadian provinces have maintained a level of autonomy in response to these developments, sometimes even influencing Canada's global trade relations and the evolution of international norms and standards. The first comprehensive review of provincial foreign trade policy in Canada, the book highlights the convergence of debates related to federalism, Canadian foreign policy, and the global political economy as they are played out in the negotiation and implementation of international trade agreements. It will be of interest to students and practitioners of political science, public policy, and economics.

Book A Trading Nation

Download or read book A Trading Nation written by Michael Hart and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada has always been a trading nation. From the early days of fur and fish to the present, when a remarkable 90 percent of the gross national product is attributable to exports and imports, Canadians have relied on international trade to bolster their economy. A Trading Nation, a brilliantly crafted overview and analysis of the historical foundations of modern Canadian trade policy, is the first survey to address the history of Canadian commercial policy in over 50 years. Michael Hart skillfully guides readers through more than three centuries of Canadian trade history. His engaging narrative explains how Canadians have largely come to accept that a country that derives much of its wealth from international commerce has much to gain from an open, well-ordered international economy. Close attention to trade and related economic policy choices, he argues, is crucial if Canada intends to adapt to the challenges of the new globalized economy.

The present volume is offered as a further contribution topublic understanding of the policy issues involved. It represents theoutcome of a study over the past two years of how heightened internationalcompetition moves governments, on the one hand, to reinforce barriers toimports as a means of protecting domestic producers and, on the other hand, to encourage and assist producers to adjust to change.

An appendix by John Williamson calculated a fundamental equilibrium exhange rate for the Canadian dollar.

Book Canada the GATT and the International Trade System

Download or read book Canada the GATT and the International Trade System written by Frank Stone and published by Institute for Research on Public Policy = Institut de recherches politiques. This book was released on 1987 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: The multilateral trade system that was erected after the end of the Second World War represents one of the more successful efforts in international co-operation ... But during recent years of adverse world economic conditions, severe strains have emerged within the system that threaten the principles on which it is based. This study examines, from a Canadian perspective, the origins, structure and operations of GATT and the other international agreements and institutions that make up the multilateral trade system. It also examines some of the main developments and issues of special interest to Canada that have emerged within the system, and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the system as it now stands. Stone's work is designed for the general reader, rather than the specialist.

Book NAFTA to USMCA What is Gained

Download or read book NAFTA to USMCA What is Gained written by Mary E. Burfisher and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) was signed on November 30, 2018 and aims to replace and modernize the North-American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This paper uses a global, multisector, computable-general-equilibrium model to provide an analytical assessment of five key provisions in the new agreement, including tighter rules of origin in the automotive, textiles and apparel sectors, more liberalized agricultural trade, and other trade facilitation measures. The results show that together these provisions would adversely affect trade in the automotive, textiles and apparel sectors, while generating modest aggregate gains in terms of welfare, mostly driven by improved goods market access, with a negligible effect on real GDP. The welfare benefits from USMCA would be greatly enhanced with the elimination of U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Mexico and the elimination of the Canadian and Mexican import surtaxes imposed after the U.S. tariffs were put in place.
