Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian History Notes The object of this little book is to awaken an interest in Canadian History to give the boys and girls of our schools a simple yet definite statement of the cause, incident and result of the impor tant events of the history of their own land; to lead them to see the steps by which Canada rose to her present proud position to see the struggle which won each of our great privileges of self government and the defects which each privilege remedied to lead them to honor and imitate the noble men and women who gave their time, their talents and their lives to work out the destiny of Canada - men whose lives teach us that Canada. Will become what her sons make her. At the same time it is hoped that the little work will be. A boon to teachers who are burdened with the many subjects of the school curriculum and the thousand interests of the school room. The two simple little sketches give a bird's-eye view of the whole period, refer to topics which are discussed in the book, and proceeding from the general to the particular, they arouse curiosity while they engender a spirit of research. What is commonly known as "England" is in reality "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland," consisting of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. England is the portion settled by the English. Ireland was conquered by Henry II., the first of the Angevins; and the Irish Parliament united with the English Parliament in 1800. Wales was conquered by Edward I., the fifth of the Angevins. Scotland and England have had the same king since the commencement of the Stuart period. James I. of England had been king of Scotland before he ascended the English throne, and he thus united the two kingdoms under one crown. The English and Scotch Parliaments were united in 1707, during the reign of Anne, the last of the Stuarts. Book Errors in Canadian History

Download or read book Errors in Canadian History written by Fred A. McCord and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Errors in Canadian History: Culled From "Prize Answers" Hermes has recently published his answers in pamphlet form, with the supposed Weight attach ing to the fact of his being the winner of the first prize and his answers are, in nearly every case, literally the same as those which the Spectator, with the assumed authority of a judge in the matter, decided to be the right ones. Additional prestige arises from the fact that he is the son of a well-known writer of Canadian History, whose works are used as text-books in many of our schools; and, moreover, the statement has been made in the public prints, and has not. Been contradicted, that the numerous notes and comments, forming part of the appendix, are from the pen of Mr. Miles' father. In these notes, only two or three of the answers are declared to be not altogether faultless, and it may therefore fairly be inferred that, in the majority of instances, the assertions of Hermes have the sanction of his father's approval.
