Book excerpt: It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, had such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn’t last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home’s past owners had all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams’ new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family’s story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.

Book Mackenzie King s Ghost

Download or read book Mackenzie King s Ghost written by John Robert Colombo and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1991-12-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do ghosts exist? Are houses haunted? Do the dead communicate with the living? Should some places be shunned? Did the ghost of the late Mackenzie King carry on a long and wide-ranging conversation with Percy J. Philip, Ottawa correspondent for The New York Times, on a park bench at Kingsmere, Quebec, in 1954? Questions like these have been asked since time immemorial. But asking such questions is easier than answering them. So instead of arguing the pros and cons of the matter, Mackenzie King’s Ghost offers the reader fifty Canadian stories of ghosts and spirits, specters and apparitions, polertgeists and other powerful presences. These personal narratives – these first-person, eye-witness accounts of supernatural, physical, or paranormal phenomena – are presented as fact, not fiction. They describe hauntings that their narrators believe actually occurred. They make eerie and scary reading.

Book The Haunting of Vancouver Island

Download or read book The Haunting of Vancouver Island written by Shanon Sinn and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling investigation into supernatural events and local lore on Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is known worldwide for its arresting natural beauty, but those who live here know that it is also imbued with a palpable supernatural energy. Researcher Shanon Sinn found his curiosity piqued by stories of mysterious sightings on the island—ghosts, sasquatches, sea serpents—but he was disappointed in the sensational and sometimes disrespectful way they were being retold or revised. Acting on his desire to transform these stories from unsubstantiated gossip to thoroughly researched accounts, Sinn uncovered fascinating details, identified historical inconsistencies, and now retells these encounters as accurately as possible. Investigating 25 spellbinding tales that wind their way from the south end of the island to the north, Sinn explored hauntings in cities, in the forest, and on isolated logging roads. In addition to visiting castles, inns, and cemeteries, he followed the trail of spirits glimpsed on mountaintops, beaches, and water, and visited Heriot Bay Inn on Quadra Island and the Schooner Restaurant in Tofino to personally scrutinize reports of hauntings. Featuring First Nations stories from each of the three Indigenous groups who call Vancouver Island home—the Coast Salish, the Nuu-chah-nulth, and the Kwakwaka’wakw—the book includes an interview with Hereditary Chief James Swan of Ahousaht.

Book Canadian Gothic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cynthia Sugars
  • Publisher : University of Wales Press
  • Release : 2014-01-15
  • ISBN : 1783160004
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Canadian Gothic written by Cynthia Sugars and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Gothic tradition in Canadian literature by tracing a distinctive reworking of the British Gothic in Canada. It traces the ways the Gothic genre was reinvented for a specifically Canadian context. On the one hand, Canadian writers expressed anxiety about the applicability of the British Gothic tradition to the colonies; on the other, they turned to the Gothic for its vitalising rather than unsettling potential. After charting this history of Gothic infusion, Canadian Gothic turns its attention to the body of Aboriginal and diasporic writings that respond to this discourse of national self-invention from a post-colonial perspective. These counter-narratives unsettle the naturalising force of this invented history, rendering the sense of Gothic comfort newly strange. The Canadian Gothic tradition has thus been a conflicted one, which reimagines the Gothic as a form of cultural sustenance. This volume offers an important reconsideration of the Gothic legacy in Canada.
