Book A Framework for Monitoring the Performance of Transport Systems in Canada

Download or read book A Framework for Monitoring the Performance of Transport Systems in Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance monitoring consists of periodically calculating a set of indicators of the performance of a system and the comparison of system performance with its own past performance or with other control groups. the results of a performance monitoring system may be used not only for evaluating the effectiveness of the system, but also as a guide to government policy formation and private decision making. this paper develops a general framework for the development and implementation of a performance monitoring system for canadian transportation that incorporates the following stages: 1) defining and operationalizing the concept of performance that applies to the transportation system, 2) discussing issues that will provide a basis for assessing and interpreting changes in performance, and 3) suggesting methods for selecting the best indicators of performance that reflect the objectives of all interest groups. for the covering abstract of the conference see irrd 807127.

Book Multimodal Freight Transportation Within the Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Basin

Download or read book Multimodal Freight Transportation Within the Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Basin written by Richard D. Stewart (Mariner) and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Freight Research Program (NCFRP) Report 17: Multimodal Freight Transportation Within the Great Lakes--Saint Lawrence Basin describes the current multimodal freight transportation system within this bi-national region--Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, and Quebec--and its importance to regional, United States, and Canadian economies. The report also analyzes the system's overall performance and related opportunities and constraints to improving performance and to meet projected freight flows. The report includes an analysis of each mode's capacity and the major commodities each of them moves; the barriers and constraints that impact each mode's ability to move cargo; the performance implications in terms of major commodity supply chains (coal, automotive parts and machinery, containerized consumer goods, grains, and iron ore); and a strategic freight planning process for multimodal transport chain performance going forward."--Publisher's description.

Book Evaluating the Performance of the Freight Transportation System of the Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Evaluating the Performance of the Freight Transportation System of the Great Lakes Region written by Qifeng Wang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimizing the supply chain has been increasingly important for the success of both manufacturers and retailers. This optimization has reduced costs for companies that are involved in the transport process and reduced cost to the end consumers, which brings benefits to both sides of the profit chain. Under difficult economic conditions, such as high fuel prices, mass congestion on major highway corridors, and strict reliability requirements for specific commodity types, the tangible as well as the intangible costs of freight transportation has been increasing rapidly. It swallows profits from the industry, increasing the cost for customers. Intermodal freight transportation has been introduced in recent years and has been more frequently selected by logistics companies, third-party logistics companies, and manufacturers to optimize the whole freight transport process. The trend of using more intermodal freight transportation is discussed in a qualitative perspective in the first part of this dissertation. Then the dissertation introduces a new shortest path algorithm entitled Tree Spanning Method (TSM) for large network processing. The new TSM algorithm is used as the main route planning algorithm throughout the dissertation for software development as well as freight demand forecasting. Due to the lack of specialized intermodal freight planning software in the industry, this dissertation discusses the key techniques in creating a specialized freight planning software, and a beta version of the software entitled "RouteInfo" is developed and introduced. The software works in a fashion similar to the Spatial Decision Support System. It enables users to be fully involved in the decision-making process and is able to determine the least expensive path between origins and designations on an integrated intermodal network. Real data includes USA highways and Canadian highways, and rail and maritime networks are integrated into the graphical user interface. Freight demand forecasting in the Great Lakes region is another focus of this dissertation. By using a four-step freight demand forecasting model at disaggregated (county) level, the travel patterns of freight transportation between 2010 and 2030 are obtained in the research area. The forecasting result is then used to quantitatively analyze the cost benefits of using more intermodal transportation options. Under the current situation of limited budgets, this dissertation proposes an intermodal solution that is able to solve the congestion issue without any highway expansion in the research area. The cost saving of this solution is also analyzed quantitatively. Overall, this dissertation is similar to a comprehensive consulting report. It proposes a new, shortest path algorithm which can be applied to the intermodal route planning. A new intermodal freight planning software is developed under a Python-based framework. The travel pattern of the freight transportation is estimated in the near future, and a solution is proposed to improve the transportation system in the research area in a cost-effective fashion.

Book Highways and Logistics and Production Performance

Download or read book Highways and Logistics and Production Performance written by Ghislain Blanchard and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retailers are moving towards minimum inventory systems such as just-in-time and quick-response. This places a premium on delivery time speed and consistency. Increasing highway congestion may limit these practices. These practices are transport-intensive, but can result in reduced logistics costs. Over time, an improved transportation network can allow shippers to restructure their production and distribution systems.

Book excerpt: The new Canada Transportation Act requires that the Minister of Transport lay before Parliament each year a report reviewing the state of transportation in Canada. This is the first annual report to be produced under the Act. The mandate of the report is interpreted broadly: this first volume sets out to consider all significant aspects of Canada's transportation system. This report covers the following topics: Transport and the economy, Government spending, Air, Marine, Rail, Road network, Trucking, Bus, Private Passenger vehicles, Financial performance of carriers, Intermodal freight, Safety, Environment, Industry trends in price and productivity, Transport and trade, Transport and tourist travel.

Book Canadian Multimodal Transport Policy and Governance

Download or read book Canadian Multimodal Transport Policy and Governance written by G. Bruce Doern and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given its geographical expanse, Canada has always faced long-term transport policy issues and challenges. Canadian Multi-Modal Transport Policy and Governance explains how and why Canadian transportation policy and related governance changed from the Pierre Trudeau era through the Chretien, Martin, Mulroney, Harper, and Justin Trudeau eras. With particular attention paid to the diversity and ongoing evolution of transportation policy since the 1960s, the broad distribution of regulatory authority across different levels of government, and the politicization of regulatory regimes and investment decisions since the 1970s, Doern, Coleman, and Prentice attempt to answer three critical questions: How and to what extent have policy and governance changed over the decades? Where has transport policy resided in federal policy agendas? And is Canada developing the policies, institutions, and capacities it needs to have a socio-economically viable and technologically advanced transportation system for the medium and long term? A sweeping history of transportation policy in Canada that fills a gap in the existing literature, Canadian Multi-Modal Transport Policy and Governance concludes that transportation has been subordinate to other federal goals and priorities, delaying and eroding transport systems into the twenty-first century.
