Book Methodology Manual Measurement of Fishing Gear Selectivity

Download or read book Methodology Manual Measurement of Fishing Gear Selectivity written by Dickson, W and published by Fisheries and Oceans. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishing selectivity can be defined as the ability to target and capture fish by species, size, or sex (or a combination of these) during harvesting operations, allowing all incidental by-catch to be released unharmed. This manual outlines the steps and processes necessary to monitor selectivity demonstrations, collect data on selectivity, and validate scientific research on selectivity under normal fishing operations. Some mathematical and statistical examples are shown to clarify the methodologies and to facilitate understanding and application. The manual is intended to provide assistance to technicians and senior fishing crew in the planning, execution, and reporting of size and species trials and demonstrations with mobile and fixed gears. Sections of the manual cover measurement of selectivity, experiment design, experimental methods, data analysis, and the reporting of results. Case studies of experiments using both fixed and mobile gear are included.

Book Fish Catching Methods of the World

Download or read book Fish Catching Methods of the World written by Andres von Brandt and published by Fishing News Books Limited. This book was released on 1984 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of Professor Von Brandt′s lifetime devotion to the study of fishing gears and catching methods from prehistoric times to the present. In it he shows how the main components of early methods – netting, lines, hooks, floats and sinkers – are still in common use even though their efficiency has been improved. His extensive travels have enabled him to include examples from many eras and many different parts of the world and his descriptions are enhanced by hundreds of illustrations. He describes gears in logical sequence from the most primitive gathering methods to the possible use of fully automated harvesting machines totally operated by computers. Also, he has developed a rational classification system for the multitude of fish devices and techniques. Although this has been done in a most scholarly way, the resultant text is alive with interesting anecdotes. This meticulously compiled edition will be invaluable to eveyone concerned with commercial fisheries as well as a delight to sport fishermen and all with an interest in fish or its capture.

Download or read book Responsible Fishing in Canada written by George Richard and published by Program Planning and Coordina Ries and Oceans Canada. This book was released on 1998 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to describe the Canadian experience relating to the introduction of both improved conservation harvesting technologies and fishing practices. The first two parts describe improvements in fishing technology which help to achieve size and species selectivity, catch limitation, and best use of the fishery resource. It includes information on hook-and-line gear, trawls, seines and nets, fish traps and fishwheels, and shellfish traps. The final two parts review approaches to responsible fishing, such as regulatory controls, industry co-operation and partnership, and training in responsible fishing operations, as well as case histories of projects and initiatives that illustrate successes in responsible fishing.

Book Improving Fish Stock Assessments

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Book Ecosystem Effects of Fishing in the Mediterranean
