Book The Philosophy of Eloquence Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of Eloquence Classic Reprint written by Don Antonio De Capmany and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Eloquence There is, however, one slight change which I have ventured to make, namely, that of dividing the book into four parts, instead of three. Perhaps it is only a matter of choice that in the enumeration of the parts of a house, the foundation is sometimes omitted, sometimes included. The latter course cer tainly appears more in accordance with our usage. Hence the Introduction of the original, which may be regarded as the most important and essential portion of all, is here made the First Part; the other Parts then follow in regular succession. This change affects only the form of the book. The sub stance continues the same as before. The time for the appearance of the bookseems opportune. A great wave of literary revival is passing over Ireland, and we are on the high-road to be a bilingual people, like the Welsh, or the Bretons, or the French Canadians. Nothing can be more just than that the Irish language - one of the most venerable relics of antiquity in the whole world, sheltered in this remote isle of the west from the revolution ary storms of society elsewhere - should be cherished and honoured. What a reproach if it should be appreciated by the most eminent scholars of Europe, and ranked by philologists as of equal importance with Sanscrit, but left by us to perish of cold neglect! Happily the Irish, spoken here from a time long before King Solomon ruled in Jerusalem or King Priam in Troy, that is, for about four thousand years, is still a living language, while Sanscrit has been dead for many centuries; and, con sidering how the Irish race everywhere pros pers under favourable circumstances, there is no reason why the language should not now, when all the world can read and write, attain to a noble literature, worthy of that fame for learning which distinguished Ireland in former days, and of the many precious old manuscriptswhich still remain, though almost unknown to us. Book The Principles of Eloquence

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Eloquence: Adapted to the Pulpit and the Bar The name of the Abbe Maury hath become so distinguished, not only in France, but also in this and other countries of Europe, that his literary productions will, probably, attract a degree of attention corresponding with that, which his public character and conduct have excited. As a member of the Constituting National Assembly, it was his lot to step forward at an epoch, which will for ever remain memorable in the annals of France. In the midst of those contests and recriminations, which prevailed among the different orders of which that assembly was composed, the Abbe Maury stood forth as the champion of the Church, and of Aristocracy. His eloquence and abilities elevated him to distinguished importance amongst his brethren, while his undaunted spirit acquired fresh energy from the number, the abilities, and the attacks of his opponents: thus though repeatedly foiled, yet like an expiring hero in the field of battle he was determined not to yield, but with his latest breath. Book The Glittering Mountains of Canada

Download or read book The Glittering Mountains of Canada written by James Monroe Thorington and published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This then is a book of mountaineering, not presenting the Canadian Rockies in their entirety -- no single volume will ever do that -- but including many of the finest things. It is also a book of mountain travel, under conditions such as perhaps the European traveller experienced in the Alps during the Eighteenth Century. Finally, it is a book of mountain history; for here is Geography in the making, and with a tradition behind it -- a story that has never been properly gathered together, and whose details, in part at least, are gone forever." -- from the Preface by J. Monroe Thorington Cloth bound in slipcase. Archival illustrations, photos and maps throughout; 4 panoramic, fold-out plates and 1 large map. Limited to 200 copies. Completely re-edited, re-designed and containing with an impressive collection of archival photos and maps, The Glittering Mountains of Canada is a must-read for anyone interested in mountain literature. The book's position in the pantheon of outdoor writing as a "classic" is only further enhanced and supported by the passionate Foreword by well-known mountain historian and environmental writer Robert William Sandford, who urges the contemporary reader to embrace Thorington's belief in the importance of landscape and the poetry of place. This is a book that deserves to be read and appreciated alongside the work of Wallace Stegner, Henry David Thoreau and Sid Marty.
