Book excerpt: "SAS[superscript 2]: A Guide to Collaborative Inquiry and Social Engagement represents a groundbreaking international effort to support the creation and mobilization of practical, authentic knowledge for social change. The guiding principle behind SAS[superscript 2] (Social Analysis Systems, www.sas2.net) is that group dialogue and social inquiry are crucial for local and global development. Social issues must be addressed socially and in a multistakeholder mode, not by private interests and experts alone, and the insights that emerge fully integrated into processes of knowledge production, planning, and decision-making." "This book will be an invaluable resource for researchers, consultants, facilitators, and activists working with people to solve problems and support inclusive inquiry and decision-making. It will also be useful to scholars and academics studying and teaching participatory action research in the social sciences."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: A leading thinker on Canada's place in the world contends that our country's greatest untapped resource may be the three million Canadians who don't live here. Entrepreneurs, educators, humanitarians: an entire province's worth of Canadian citizens live outside Canada. Some will return, others won't. But what they all share is the ability, and often the desire, to export Canadian values to a world sorely in need of them. And to act as ambassadors for Canada in industries and societies where diplomatic efforts find little traction. Surely a country with people as diverse as Canada's ought to plug itself into every corner of the globe. We don't, and sometimes not even when our expats are eager to help. Failing to put this desire to work, contends bestselling author and longtime foreign correspondent John Stackhouse, is a grave error for a small country whose voice is getting lost behind developing nations of rapidly increasing influence. The soft power we once boasted is getting softer, but we have an unparalleled resource, if we choose to use it. To ensure Canada's place in the world, Stackhouse argues in Planet Canada, we need this exceptional province of expats and their special claim on the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last foreign policy review was conducted in 1995 and there has been no thoroughgoing, decisive, public reconsideration of the significance of the terrorist attacks against the United States, the violent response in U.S. policy and action, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, tests and failures of the United Nations Security Council, and the transformed quality of relations along the Canada-U.S. border. Still less has there been any open, extensive, government-led reassessment of the obligations of continental defence or the new and future accommodations required to realign Canada's relations with the United States and the rest of the world. Policy initiatives have instead looked temporizing and partial.

Book Reconquering Canada

Download or read book Reconquering Canada written by Andre and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen Quebec federalists dare to re-imagine the province and its defining role within a stronger Canada Quebecers have been debating their future relative to Canada since before Confederation, though the discussions have been most heated during the past four decades. In this time the debate has gone around in circles. Now, instead of presenting the often-repeated theme of Quebecois as constantly victimized by Canada, 14 Quebec personalities come together to propose a new vision which affirms Quebec's autonomy and includes it in building a strong, federal Canada. Eschewing traditional arguments which they claim prevent modern Quebec from advancing, lead to sterile debates, allow Quebecers to shirk responsibility and feed their victim complex, the contributors to this volume draw on their varied professional backgrounds as politicians, militants, intellectuals to invite Quebecers (and other Canadians) to rediscover the extraordinary potential of a well-crafted and properly realized federalism. Among the arguments, former provincial justice minister Martin Cauchon analyzes the evolution of the Constitution, discusses how Quebecois have used it as a tool to feed political debate and makes the argument that Quebec should acknowledge that the document reflects diversity and sign it, the sooner the better. Law professor Jean Leclair refutes the claim that nationality is exclusive, urging Quebecois to consider themselves both Quebecois and Canadian. UNESCO ambassador Marie Bernard-Meunier critiques the existing Canadian federal structure which she claims denies the provinces an institutionalized role at that level and suggests that an elected Senate and a commitment to unity might solve the problem. Although it was largely ignored by the French Canadian media when it was first published in French in 2007, The Reconquest of Canada is a breath of fresh air in the ongoing debate regarding Quebec's position relative to Canada. In this important book, the authors deliver a strong message that federalism provides Quebecers with the opportunity not only to find autonomy but to participate in the building of a united Canada. It is a clear, conciliatory treatise that paves the way for fresh voices and constructive discussion about the future of Canadian politics.

Book Words Don t Hurt Me They Make Me

Download or read book Words Don t Hurt Me They Make Me written by Dr. Yolanda Fleurantin, Ph.D and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A traumatic childhood experience causes a failed relationship with my parents and most of my siblings. When those who were supposed to nurture you, provide for you, love you, guide you, take care of you, make you feel comfortable instead choose otherwise and disappoint you, the end results can lead to destruction, shame, low self-esteem and/or failure. “The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14). The power of choice and having dreams had kept me going, kept me alive. While it is common to find people fixated on their history, the past, or on what other people had done to them, or said about them, none of these will really help you move forward. The good news for me is that my life has taught me a lot. Although there were plenty of things I could not control—like my parents’ anger, the slapping, the beatings, the whooping, the pulling, the name-calling, the putting me down in front of others—I always find strength to remain in a standing position. I had always tried to choose what next best thing for me to do. I had also tried to heal those internal wounds by reading self-help books. By doing so, I had learned better ways to cope and deal with issues, learn to love, appreciate, respect, forgive, and deal with my siblings in a less emotional way. I also know that life will take the meaning that you give to it. I sometimes feel cheated by my parents. I especially think that way because one of the things that children do is to teach their parents, challenge them, and expand their lives. An opportunity or a time in my life I had never lived or even experienced. It all seems like a story of unfinished sentences, of suppressed embraces, of almost belonging, of stammered affection.
