Book The Book of New Canadians Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of New Canadians Classic Reprint written by D. J. Dickie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of New Canadians The Book of New Canadians contains stories told by the children of twenty different countries. The stories de scribe the homes of about half the nations representatives of which have become citizens of Canada. Realising that it would be impossible in a book of this size to tell stories about all the different peoples now living in Canada, I consulted the latest census report of the Dominion Government. In the report the different nationals are listed in the order of the numbers resident in Canada. I chose the first twenty listed. Equally interesting and instructive stories about the other countries and their peoples could be told. Should these be called for a second book will, no doubt, be prepared. It is perhaps unnecessary to explain why stories of I France have not been included in the book. Since 1763 immigration from France has been very small, and as for the French Canadians they are much more anciently Canadian than the British Canadians. Book HANDBK NEW CANADIANS CLASSIC

Download or read book HANDBK NEW CANADIANS CLASSIC written by Alfred Fitzpatrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook New Canadians It combines a series of lessons in English with considerable practical information about Canada. It is not intended for school children, but for the adults. The general information on Canada is meant for those who have gained some proficiency in the language. The outlines on Government and Naturalization may seem difficult, but in these subjects the average foreigner is more or less interested from the time of his arrival and, very likely, has already picked up a good deal of vocabulary. The immigrant finds himself in the midst of new conditions. He lacks the language, and everything com'bines to make him the prey of unfavourable circumstances. Even the better informed of his own race, already in Canada, are sometimes ready to take advantage of him. Particularly does this apply to the masses of unskilled labourers. The in ux of non-english-speaking peoples into Canada is very large in proportion to the population. We allow new-comers to live in settlements on the prairies or, what is worse, to form colonies in large urban and industrial centres. There, their racial characteristics are continued and encouraged by native societies and leagues, forming hich are a menace to Canadian unity. Hole sections of alien races in Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Vancouver, and other centres. The tendency is for the foreign-born to make little effort for naturalization. We havg a right to demand that every man who comes to Canada become a citizen of this country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Canada and the Canadian Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canada and the Canadian Question Classic Reprint written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Canadian Question Where the subject is so complex and so disjointed, to devise a satisfactory arrangement is not easy. Writers and readers of the history of the Dominion too well know how wanting it is in unity. For the special purpose of this work, which is neither elaborate description nor detailed history, but the presentation of a case and of a problem, it seemed best first, briefly to delineate the Provinces, which are the factors of the case, then to sketch their political history, leading up to Confederation, then to give an account of the Confederation itself, with its political sequel, up to the present time, and finally to propound the problem. The general reader, if any one answering to that description ever takes up this work, may skip the chapter on the Federal polity, the subject of which to the reader specially interested in Colonial institutions will probably seem the most important of all. To impart anything like liveliness to a discussion of the British North America Act one must have the touch of Voltaire. Book New Canadian Library

Download or read book New Canadian Library written by Janet Beverly Friskney and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1950s, much Canadian literature was out of print, making it relatively inaccessible to readers, including those studying the subject in schools and universities. When English professor Malcolm Ross approached Toronto publisher Jack McClelland in 1952 to propose a Canadian literary reprint series, it was still the accepted wisdom among publishers that Canadian literature was of insufficient interest to the educational market to merit any great publishing risks. Eventually convinced by Ross that a latent market for Canadian literary reprints did indeed exist, McClelland & Stewart launched the New Canadian Library (NCL) series in 1958, with Ross as its general editor. In 2008, the NCL will celebrate a half-century of publication. In New Canadian Library, Janet B. Friskney takes the reader through the early history of the NCL series, focusing on the period up to 1978 when Malcolm Ross retired as general editor. A wealth of archival resources, published reviews, and the NCL volumes themselves are used to survey the working relationship between Ross and McClelland, as well as the collaborative participation of those who, through the middle decades of the twentieth century, were committed to studying and nurturing Canada's literary heritage. To place the New Canadian Library in its proper historical context, Friskney examines the simultaneous development of Canadian literary studies as a legitimate area of research and teaching in academe and acknowledges the NCL as a milestone in Canadian publishing history.

Download or read book The Real Canadian Classic Reprint written by John A. Thomas Lloyd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Canadian Facts, even those of sentiment, are facts, and it might be not uninteresting to examine, link by link, the long chain of cause and effect which has led through Canadian history to this momentous and spontaneous decision. It was given, it must be remembered, by the representatives of those two great European races who fought desperately for the mastership of Canada. It was given by the fellow countrymen of both Wolfe and Montcalm. For, at this cross-roads of the Dominion's history, French Canada has definitely associated herself with the national verdict against any economic change that might indirectly tend to sever the Dominion from the British connection. Book Canada as It Is Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canada as It Is Classic Reprint written by John Foster Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada as It Is Snows, he is made aware he has said something which is not appreciated. Should he unfortunately allude to the long winter, the difficulty of keep ing warm, and seek information about fur overcoats, he will be more or less politely told he is one of those ignorant Englishmen who help in libelling Canada by suggesting it is a region swathed most of the year in snow. Winter is a touchy topic with the Canadian. He never talks about it himself. He will tell you about the peaches grown in Ontario he will become rather pink with enthusiasm describing the wheat region Of the West; he will provide you with a bag of pamphlets on where to get the best fishing and best shooting, and he will remark, with a twinkle in his eye, that it must be rather uncomfortable living in the English rains. Like his neighbour in the States, he thinks it good sport to bait the visiting Englishman on the awfulness of the climate at home, where it is foggy when it isn't drizzling. You smile; but that is only proof he is correct. I am no apologist for the English climate. But in my life I have never known such rain, such clamminess, such a cold, Shivering summer as prevailed when I Visited the eastern provinces of the Dominion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada to-Day It is usual for visitors who commit to print their impressions of a new country, the information they have gathered, and the judgments they have formed, to offer apologies for publication, in the hope of averting, in some measure, the hostility naturally felt by those invited to read a book of travel written by one who cannot claim a thorough knowledge of the land of which he writes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Canada In the following pages will be found some contributions towards the history of Canada and of the manners and customs of its inhabitants during the hundred years beginning October 5th, 1792. On that date my ancestor, Roger Conant, a graduate of Yale University, and a Massachusetts landowner, set foot on Canadian soil as a United Empire Loyalist. From him and from his descendants - handed down from father to son - there have come to me certain historical particulars which I regard as a trust and which I herewith give to the public. I am of the opinion that it is in such plain and unvarnished statements that future historians of our country will find their best materials, and I therefore feel constrained to do my share towards the task of supplying them. The population of Canada is but five and one-third millions, but who can tell what it will be in a few decades? Book Finding New Homes in Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Finding New Homes in Canada Classic Reprint written by Edwin C. Guillet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding New Homes in Canada DO you ever wish that you had lived long, long ago? Do you sometimes think, when you are on your way to school, that it would be fun to talk to a boy or girl who went to school in Canada a hundred or two hundred, or even three hundred years ago? What would you say to them, and what would they say to you? You would show them your school books, and perhaps you would try to read out of theirs. Yes, I think it would be fun, and a very good education for you, too. Perhaps sometimes when you have been on a hike you have come to a hill-top and have looked down from it at a pretty farmyard below, a house of white frame or stone, a barn with a pitch roof and an Orchard all darkly green and' white in the warm spring sun. And as you have looked, you have wondered whose home it first was. Did boys and girls live there hundreds of years ago? Surely they must have. Or perhaps on your summer holidays you have found a woodland path with shrubs and bushes overhanging it, and, as you have picked your way along it, you have pretended that you were a Canadian pioneer going along a blazed trail to your first Canadian home.
