Book Canada and National Service Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canada and National Service Classic Reprint written by Colonel William Hamilton Merritt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and National Service The recognition that all was not well with the system of defence in vogue in Canada, that we lacked even the basic principle of national organisation and preparedness, did not come to me through being told something or reading something. In my case it eventuated from a distinct process of evolution, through seeing vastly different results from other conditions, and then from enquiring into what had brought them about. It is now nearly a dozen years ago that chance led me into the mountains of Switzerland, after more than a score of years' experience in the Canadian Militia. There, enquiry into the matter of shooting led to an enfolding of enough of the wonder of a true democracy of defence thoroughly to arouse my interest. This was the beginning of a general investigation, at every opportunity, of the Military systems pertaining to other countries, and of an examination into the conditions that prevailed in Canada in our past history. By contrast the hopelessness of our existing conditions was all too apparent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilian, Vol. 10: A Fortnightly Journal Devoted to the Interests of the Civil Service of Canada; September 28, 1917 Compulsory military service having been introduced, the Roll of Honour of the Public Service of Canada closes on the date of the first Proclamation under the Military Service Act. The Roll of Honour is a roll of volunteers and the names of conscripts will not be entered therein. The Roll of Honour, as compiled and published by The Civilian, is the greatest evidence ever given of the patriotism and willing sacrifices of the men and women of the Canadian Public Service in the national cause. Its value to the Service in a material way has already been proved repeatedly and, as time goes on, it will be more appreciated in a higher sense. The importance of having the R011 as full and complete as possible is obvious. The editors are working hard to attain that end, - hence this last call. Book Canada As It Was Is and May Be Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada, as It Was, Is, and May Be, Vol. 2 of 2 On one occasion we difl'ered as to the policy of appointing a time and place for two friends to meet us with 100 armed Canadians each. I wished them to remain at home until they knew we had landed on the main shore of the enemy, particularly so as their march would not be along one to join us, and circumstances might oblige us to foil them another time, about crossing over to the enemy's camp, when they were strong and we less than 200. He offered there to be one of fifty to do so; but I heard nothing more of the project after giving him permission to get up a party for the purpose. The fears he openly expressed, in hearing of the troops, at the probable effect upon the island of the enemy's firing their mortars and heavy batteries, was very discouraging, and we quarrelled about that - again, because he chose to consider himself in the light of a nonentity, for the reason that I did not deem it proper to call him in as a military counsellor. I should have done this most willingly if I had not, by this time, lost all faith in his qualifications or discretion. I was well aware, that with so little actual experience as I possessed, a trusty counsellor would be a great acquisition. To keep his restless spirit quiet, how ever, while our reinforcements were coming in, as well as to relieve myself of a most burthensome duty, the general correspondence was entrusted to his charge. How well, or how badly he performed the duty I am not able to judge, for he scarcely ever thought it necessary to make any reports, and his course in this respect has assuredly been detrimental to the service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Fisherman, Vol. 4: January, 1917 A campaign for National Service is at present being instituted throughout Canada. Briefly it is a census of the man power of Canada - a tally of all male Cana' dians between the ages of 16 and 65, and the trade they are working at for a living. The National Service campaign foreshadows a full utilization of the country's resources for the success ful prosecution of the war. Men engaged in necessary occupations will he expected to work to their fullest capacity. Others, not so engaged and physically fit, vill be expected to join the ranks of the fighting men. We strongly urge every fisherman, fish-house work er, canner, and those actively engaged in the produc tion and distribution of fish foods, -to fill out their National Service cards and send them in. The fisheries are necessary to the life of the country. It is possible that the Fishing Industry will be asked to speed up production to supply food for the people at home and overseas. The Government can only do this effectively when it has a list of the men engaged in the industry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Confederate Operations in Canada and New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book Confederate Operations in Canada and New York Classic Reprint written by John W. Headley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confederate Operations in Canada and New York There is little consolation in relating the particulars of the hostile operations along the northern borders of the United States, by Confederate soldiers from Canada, who were.assigned to this service by the authorities of the Confederate States in 1864. And yet the authentic narrative of this desperate warfare which recalls and includes the cruel phases of the deplorable conflict may be due to the survivors and the dead of the North and the South who were military foes, and may serve as a lesson and a guide to the present and future generations of our reunited country in determining the price of peace and the pretexts for war. All references that pertain to the conduct of the Federal Government and soldiers toward non-combatants are derived entirely from verified authority and the official records of the War Department of the United States. But little account of the engagements between the great armies is attempted. And it is deemed sufficient to submit the summaries of Generals Buell and Grant, the commanders of the two Federal armies at the battle of Shiloh, concerning the results of battles, the forces engaged, the morale of soldiers, and the cause of the war. The military operations in the Department of Tennessee are noted partially from personal knowledge, but those west of the Mississippi River, being of like character under like conditions, are omitted. And besides, the commanders in both these Departments of the Confederacy appear to have missed opportunities alike at the critical period - 1862-3, whilst Gen. Robert E.Lee was never driven, by generalship or numbers, from Virginia, but upon her bosom ended his struggle and breathed his last sigh as a soldier of the Southern Confederacy.
