Book excerpt: "These are all warning markers-DANGER!-in our history book, written down so that we don't repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel-they at the beginning, we at the end - and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don't be so naive and self-confident. You're not exempt..." I Cor. 10:11-12 (The Message Bible). Just like these multitudes of Israelites that left Egypt (bondage) for Canaan (God's fullness, completeness and blessings), you as a Christian and believer in Jesus Christ are embarking on a similar spiritual journey. God has offered a Canaan Land opportunity to you as an individual, but the opposition to your seizing it can be threatening and formidable. What are the oppositions that God has allowed in your path? Maybe it is health issues, loss of relationships, joblessness, financial hardship, business failure or some other severe trials? Are there things that have you trapped in bitterness and discouragement? Then the story in this book may really apply to where you are right now with God. You may be getting ready to have your door opened to enter into your Promised Land. However, you are well aware of the giants and Canaanites with heavily fortified cities that you will be coming against if this door opens up for you. Will you affirm the giants and Canaanites with heavily fortified cities, like the generation that perished or the promise and faith of Joshua and Caleb?

Book excerpt: Set in the American South in the years before and during the Civil War, John Wray’s hypnotic new novel is at once a crime story, a bravura work of historical fiction, and a fire-and-brimstone meditation on American credulity and corruption. Thaddeus Morelle’s followers call him “the Redeemer.” Over the years he has led the Island 37 Gang from stealing horses to stealing slaves in an enterprise so nefarious that both the Union and Confederacy have placed a bounty on their heads. But now Morelle is dead, murdered by his puppet and protégé, Virgil Ball, who may rid himself of the Redeemer but can never be free of his Trade. Based on the true story of John Murrell, a figure once as infamous as Jesse James, Canaan’s Tongue is suspenseful and fiercely comic, a modern masterpiece of the American grotesque.

Book El Ahwat A Fortified Site from the Early Iron Age Near Nahal Iron Israel

Download or read book El Ahwat A Fortified Site from the Early Iron Age Near Nahal Iron Israel written by Adam Zertal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excavations at el-Ahwat constitute a unique and fascinating archaeological undertaking. The site is the location of a fortified city dated to the early Iron Age (ca. 1220–1150 BCE), hidden in a dense Mediterranean forest in central Israel, near the historic ’Arunah pass. Discovered in 1992 and excavated between 1993 and 2000, the digs revealed an urban “time capsule” erected and inhabited during a short period of time (60–70 years), with no earlier site below or subsequent one above it. This report provides a vivid picture of the site, its buildings, and environmental economy as evinced by the stone artifacts, animal bones, agricultural installations, and iron forge that were uncovered here. The excavators of this site suggest in this work that the settlement was inhabited by the Shardana Sea-Peoples, who arrived in the ancient Near East at the end of the 13th century BCE and settled in northern Canaan. In weighing the physical evidence and the logic of the interpretation presented herein, the reader will be treated to a new and compelling archaeological and historical challenge. “...this final publication of el–Ahwat will hold great value for those studying settlement, architecture, and change in the hill country culture of Iron Age Canaan.” Jeff Emanuel
