Book Can We Still Be Christians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Can We Still Be Christians Classic Reprint written by Rudolf Eucken and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Can We Still Be Christians? Since a book like this has a decidedly personal note, it seems fitting that I should devote a few words to setting forth my personal position in the matter. Influenced by the sombre side of life, I was keenly interested in religious problems from very early days; but at the same time I could never come into friendly relation with the Churches, and I never thought of entering their ministry. Later on, indeed, when philosophy became my life-work, I sought to suppress the religious interest altogether, else I should scarcely have devoted myself so assiduously to a study of Aristotle and philosophical terminology. The old interest, however, would not die, and ever and anon it broke out again, even in the midst of my philosophical pursuits. But the old problem also remained: In the light of our freer convictions, what attitude can we take up, and ought we to take up, towards Christianity? For a long time it has been on my mind to speak out on this subject, but again and again I have postponed the task in the hope of being able to treat it more worthily as years brought me added experience, and to undertake more confidently the no slight responsibility involved in such treatment. It seems to me now, however, that the time has at length come when I should carry out my intention. For, as regards myself, old age draws near, and there is no knowing how long I may still be fresh enough for work. Then, too, the time is ripe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Christianity: Or Old Truths Restated It has long been a cherished hope of the author that he might be able to state the great essential doctrines of the common salvation - that is, the saving truths of the gospel - in such form as would commend them to the judgment and the cordial acceptation of God's chil dren in all evangelical denominations. This volume is the contribution of a Presbyterian to that wider Christian ity of the ancient past, and also of the future, in which it is hoped all evangelical Christians will ere long stand nearer together than they now stand, because they will learn to look less at their points of difference and more at the great principles of their common salvation. What the world needs is a living Christianity, and the Church can render it no better service than by proclaiming anew those old truths which are vital and saving. Book Christianity in the New Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in the New Age Classic Reprint written by Emily Herman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book The Darkening Age

  • Publisher : HarperCollins

  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book The Darkening Age written by Catherine Nixey and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book, winner of the Jerwood Award from the Royal Society of Literature, a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, and named a Book of the Year by the Telegraph, Spectator, Observer, and BBC History Magazine, this bold new history of the rise of Christianity shows how its radical followers helped to annihilate Greek and Roman civilizations. The Darkening Age is the largely unknown story of how a militant religion deliberately attacked and suppressed the teachings of the Classical world, ushering in centuries of unquestioning adherence to "one true faith." Despite the long-held notion that the early Christians were meek and mild, going to their martyrs' deaths singing hymns of love and praise, the truth, as Catherine Nixey reveals, is very different. Far from being meek and mild, they were violent, ruthless, and fundamentally intolerant. Unlike the polytheistic world, in which the addition of one new religion made no fundamental difference to the old ones, this new ideology stated not only that it was the way, the truth, and the light but that, by extension, every single other way was wrong and had to be destroyed. From the first century to the sixth, those who didn't fall into step with its beliefs were pursued in every possible way: social, legal, financial, and physical. Their altars were upturned and their temples demolished, their statues hacked to pieces, and their priests killed. It was an annihilation. Authoritative, vividly written, and utterly compelling, this is a remarkable debut from a brilliant young historian.

Book The Christianity of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christianity of Christ Classic Reprint written by Ernest Schneider and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ There soon comes a time in every child's life when it begins to notice things and to realize what is right and what is wrong. This is especially true if the child be of poor parents and must early bear a part of the burden of getting a liv ing. And as the child grows Older he can see all around him that something is wrong, but what it is he does not know. Life seems a puzzle. Anybody can see that something is wrong, but how to improve conditions is a matter of no little concern. Millions of reasons are given, investi gating committees galore are put to work trying to find the cause, and still things go from bad to worse. But the cause of all evils is the lack of Christianity. Lack of Christianity! Some one will say, with all our churches and services? Yes, churches enough and religions enough, or rather too many, but Christianity does not exist. In the following pages I will give my analysis of life and the rules which will, if put into practice, insure us a life as the Creator intended we should live it. I hope the day will come when this selfish life as it exists will be extinct and in its stead will reign the altruistic life as taught by Christ. Give Christianity full swing, and heaven on earth we will have. Then, and then only, can man be the highest creation of God, whereas in this degenerate state he is an abomination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dare We Be Christians God's world is great; too great for a little mind like mine to hold. I have traveled over thousands of miles of it, but for the most part my memory holds only a blur of space and movement. But there are a few places which my memory has made all my own. I know a place, just above Little Mud Turtle Lake, where the Gull River tilts around the rocks and sweeps in a curling crescent of foam around the wooded basin below the rapids. That place is mine because I swam in it with my boys; the river carried us down the rapids and around the whirlpool, shouting and laughing. Book Christianity and the New Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and the New Age Classic Reprint written by George Preston Mains and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the New Age While I could covet for this book a wide welcome, an interdenominational welcome, from both the ministry and the laity, in its preparation I have had not less in mind the lay than the ministerial reader. I have been led, sanely and constructively I hope, to discuss many phases of modem fact and thought, and in my various processes I think it could be only helpful if a large constituency of thinking laymen were to keep me company. I do not for a moment assume that all such readers would give consent to all the positions of the book, but it is my confidence that all would receive some benefit; and it might not be of least value that the attention of readers should be newly challenged at the very points, if any, which seem to awaken dissent. The theme of this volume is - the Church? Yes; but something far other and more. The central thought around which the entire discussion revolves is - the world-kingdom of Jesus Christ. I have elected for the title of the book, as covering perhaps its conception more perfectly than any other phrasing, this - Christianity and the New Age. This title is exceedingly broad - indeed, "broader than the measure of man's mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Total Christianity The purpose of this series of addresses is not con troversial. If I could not find anything to speak about for seven Sunday evenings except to make a series of attacks upon my fellow Christians in those other camps, I should certainly stop preaching and under take to earn my living in some more reputable way. In the newspapers much is made oftentimes of the divisions of Christendom, but these jokers know not what they say. The divisions on the face of them are many, but the agreements are more numerous and more significant. And the deeper meaning of these divisions lies in the fact that each groupof Christians which has any right to be, has made some special and characteristic contribution to the total Christianity. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Download or read book Studies in Christianity Classic Reprint written by A. Clutton-Brock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Christianity I am often told by my friends that Christianity is nothing but a set of statements about supernatural history which no one now can honestly believe. When I deny this, they ask me what Christianity is; and, if I try to tell them, they reply - That is not Christianity at all but certain beliefs which were held by men before Christ was born and may be held by them after his name has been forgotten. But, all the while, I am convinced that there is a body of belief, not concerned with supernatural history, which is Christian; that it began with the teaching of Christ, as Platonism began with the teaching of Plato, that it has been enlarged and enriched with the experience of nineteen centuries and yet has remained itself. I am not anxious to prove the originality of Christ in detail. It may be that he said no single thing which had not been said before him. The originality of a great teacher consists, not in particular sayings or doings, but in his power of giving life to an idea so that it continues to live in other men's minds and is enriched with other men's thought. The greatest ideas are not those which remain peculiar to their authors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
