Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The author of The Happiness Project and “a force for real change” (Brené Brown) examines how changing our habits can change our lives. “If anyone can help us stop procrastinating, start exercising, or get organized, it’s Gretchen Rubin. The happiness guru takes a sledgehammer to old-fashioned notions about change.”—Parade Most of us have a habit we’d like to change, and there’s no shortage of expert advice. But as we all know from tough experience, no magic, one-size-fits-all solution exists. It takes work to make a habit, but once that habit is set, we can harness the energy of habits to build happier, stronger, more productive lives. In Better Than Before, acclaimed writer Gretchen Rubin identifies every approach that actually works. She presents a practical, concrete framework to allow readers to understand their habits—and to change them for good. Infused with Rubin’s compelling voice, rigorous research, and easy humor, and packed with vivid stories of lives transformed, Better Than Before explains the (sometimes counterintuitive) core principles of habit formation and answers the most perplexing questions about habits: • Why do we find it tough to create a habit for something we love to do? • How can we keep our healthy habits when we’re surrounded by temptations? • How can we help someone else change a habit? Rubin reveals the true secret to habit change: first, we must know ourselves. When we shape our habits to suit ourselves, we can find success—even if we’ve failed before. Whether you want to eat more healthfully, stop checking devices, or finish a project, the invaluable ideas in Better Than Before will start you working on your own habits—even before you’ve finished the book.

Book excerpt: “An intellectual page-turner” set in a secretive countercultural community by the author of The Beans of Egypt, Maine (O, The Oprah Magazine). It’s the height of summer 1999, when local Maine newspaper the Record Sun receives numerous tipoffs from anonymous callers warning of violence, weapons stockpiling, and rampant child abuse at the nearby homeschool on Heart’s Content Road. Hungry to break into serious journalism, Ivy Morelli sets out to meet the mysterious leader of the homeschool, Gordon St. Onge—referred to by many as “The Prophet.” Soon, Ivy ingratiates herself into the sprawling Settlement, a self-sufficient counterculture community that many locals suspect to be a wild cult. Despite her initial skepticism—not to mention the Settlement’s ever-growing group of pregnant teenage girls—Ivy finds herself irresistibly drawn to Gordon. Then, a newcomer—a gifted, disturbed young girl with wild orange hair—joins the community, and falls into a complicated relationship with the charismatic Prophet. When the Record Sun finally runs its piece on the leader of the Settlement, lives will be changed both within and beyond the community, in this novel by a writer described by the New York Times Book Review as “a James Joyce of the backcountry, a Proust of rural society.”

Book The Sin We Treat as a Virtue

Download or read book The Sin We Treat as a Virtue written by B. Ward Powers and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for all those of us who love the Lord Jesus: because this whole topic is an issue that deeply concerns every one of us, and it really matters. Is there indeed a sin we treat as a virtue? Could this possibly be true of us, of me? Yes, there is a sin we are treating as a virtue. This sin is greed—sheer plain greed. Coveting. The comfortable, respectable, sin. But the extremely dangerous and damaging sin. It is condemned by the Tenth Commandment. It is the sin Christ spoke against more often and more vehemently than any other— he warned against it in the strongest possible terms: “Beware! Take care! Watch out!” It chokes the Word of God in your life, he said. It hinders a person entering the Kingdom of God and deprives them of eternal life. That is how serious it is. Paul said that greed is a form of idolatry and can destroy a person. He found this sin sneaky, tricky, and insidious. The risk to us from this sin is all the worse because it is so often not recognized as sin. It is so all-pervasive that we do not actually see its deceitful danger. But statistics show it is insidiously at work in the church, seriously affecting its work and witness in the world. It is a trap and a snare that can so easily catch us quite unawares. Breaking free of it is in fact one of the most difficult issues we face in our Christian lives. Can anything be done about this? Yes! It is crucial that we become aware of what the Bible says about it, and then think through how to live our lives in accordance with biblical teaching. This book will point to all the relevant Scriptures. Can you afford not to heed what they say? They just might save you from spiritual disaster. Don’t treat this lightly. Jesus didn’t. Paul didn’t.

Book excerpt: In this “perfect, black little tale” from the author of Honour Thy Father, a feud between neighbors in an English town escalates to terrifying consequence (The Observer). In northern England, along a block of row houses, lives the widow Nell. Lately, she’s had a difficult time adjusting to her new lodger—her son Rodney. An ex-con imprisoned for something no one likes to talk about, Rodney has moved back into his old bedroom. He is his mother’s pride and shame. Two doors down from Nell is Olive. Obese, childless, near senile, and given to violent mood swings, Olive is comforted by her pets, and coddled by a patient lover. Once, Olive was beautiful. Once, Olive was Nell’s best friend. But for more than fifty years now, they’ve been separated by a paralyzing hatred and rivalry. Then, one night, the eight-year-old son of a new neighbor invites them both to a Guy Fawkes Day bonfire in his backyard. Amid the smoldering embers of fall leaves, a spark of another kind is ignited. Their violent rage is set to explode, a buried past will be revealed, and no one on their quiet little block is ever going to feel safe again. In this “absorbing” (Los Angeles Times) novel from the Somerset Maugham Award winner, Glaister expertly reveals her “uncomfortable knack of putting her finger on things we fear most” (The Independent on Sunday). “A cool, sure, bright entertainment.” —Kirkus Reviews “Before Gillian Flynn, there was Lesley Glaister.” —Harper’s Bazaar

Book excerpt: Trick may have met his match. The woman in his bed was sexy as hell and up for anything. Two things he found hard to resist. If he hadn't been burned so badly by his ex-wife, he might consider seeing where this fiery attraction between them might lead. Thinking to take advantage of what Lindsey is offering one more time before he tells her goodbye, he's stunned to find her gone from his bed the next morning. He's disappointed but tells himself it's for the best. Spending too much time with a woman like Lindsey might have him doing something stupid, like maybe rethinking his bachelor status. With his plate already filled with trying to figure out his ex's next move, his club being in the process of taking on a support club and having to constantly make sure his kids were safe and well taken care of, he resolves to forget the woman who intrigues the hell out of him. Showing up for his son's parent/teacher conference, he couldn't have been more surprised if he'd been struck by lightning. The woman he couldn't stop thinking about also happened to be his son's teacher. What were the odds? As an elementary school teacher, Lindsey isn't sure there is room in her life for a rough around the edges man like Trick. Sure, they had a physical chemistry that was off the charts, but could it, in all honesty, ever work between them? Not that it was an option. It was all just fantasy and wishful thinking on her part, and it wasn't like she ever planned on seeing the man again. She'd had one glorious night in his bed, and it had been enough to tell her she was playing with fire and if she wasn't careful, she could get burned. Shocked to her core, she almost had a heart attack when he walked into her classroom. Of all the ways she had imagined a chance encounter, never had she thought it would be as a father to one of her students. Holy cow! He was a dad! A hot, sexy, biker dad. Who would have thought? Seeing him again, she is quickly reminded of why she had been so drawn to him in the first place. From his tall frame to his coffee brown eyes to his too long blond hair and his sexy, confident swagger, the man was every woman's deepest darkest fantasy. She is also reminded of something someone once told her about being careful what she wished for because it might just come true. Rats. Maybe she should have taken the advice more seriously.
