Book excerpt: Caterina Cammino is an attractive and reclusive thirty-five-year-old woman whose nightly ritual is to go to the beach and drink wine from the bar of her car. Though alcohol is her crutch and companion, it cant erase the memory of the summer of 1988 when she lost her innocence--and awoke to a scream. Tyler Beck is an intellectually gifted eighteen-year-old loner who has an invisible, magical cord above his right shoulder; he is also a former drug addict who was rehabilitated with the help of a counselor named Robie. After Robie dies, however, a distraught Beck exits his friends funeral and seeks refuge at the beachand in heroin. Their lives collide when Caterinas car strikes a trashcan that crashes into the semi-conscious Beck. When they both ask aloud for help, the grieving parts of themselves are transported to another dimension called 10-17. Caterina arrives in this dimension as her seventeen-year-old self, Cat, and there she meets Beck, whom she nicknames Ty. Once in this new world, set against a backdrop of Italy, they meet a Watcher named Miranda who tells them that they are in 10-17 for healing, even while their parallel lives are continuing on Earth. Miranda explains that the dimensions are spaced like slats on a window blind; she also tells the teenagers about a place called Thare, an Earth-like dimension populated by humans, but without suffering or addiction. While Beck readily embraces his love for the mature Caterina, she is conflicted over her feelings for a man half her age. Meanwhile, in Dimension 10-17, as Cat and Ty complete their lesson, they are torn over the choice that Miranda offers them: To go to the perfect world of Thare and leave the Earth and their families behind, or to return wholly to their Earthly selves...
Download or read book Glimpses of God written by Cookie Magee, DMin and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glimpses of God are opportunities to recognize, with greater clarity, the presence of God in the various places, people, events, circumstances, objects, and languages of our daily life. I offer them to you as an opportunity to reflect on how much God is a part of your life, and how He has chosen to be in relationship with you, how you have chosen to be in relationship with Him, and how through this relationship, you become one of His greatest Glimpses. They are glimpses because we can miss them if we are not paying attention. If we open our heart to His love, our ears to hear his gentle whisper, our eyes to see His light, our hands to feel His hand in ours, and our feet to walk with Him, then we are growing in our relationship with our God and exuding His presence in a clear and vibrant way. I believe that it is in and through this relationship that we are able to recognize His invitation to be a Glimpse to others on our life. I believe it is then that we see more clearly His presence within ourselves. As we recognize His presence within ourselves, and strive to see it more readily in others, then we grow not only in love with our God, self, and others, we are filled with a deeper peace, a greater joy, and a sense of being beloved. If we are open to sharing these gifts with others, then we too are being a Glimpse of God to those in our family, our neighborhood, our community, our society, our church, our friends, those we encounter on a daily basis and even the stranger.

Book excerpt: This text offers a readable and friendly presentation of the important methods, findings, and theories of human aging, while actively involving the reader in meaningful exercises and critical thinking. Students are repeatedly challenged to apply information in the text to the older adults in their own lives. Specifically, suggestions for enhancing the lives of their older relatives are offered and encouraged. These include guidelines for discussions they might have regarding social, emotional, and environmental changes as well encouraging intellectual and social interaction. In this Edition: Emphasis on the science of the study of aging and why questions in aging are difficult to answer, how social scientists attempt to handle such difficulties, and the successes and failures social scientists have had thus far in answering those questions. The text also demonstrates how current research findings are now being applied in the real world and/or how they might be applied in the future. Cross-cultural comparisons and ethnic group comparisons are included wherever possible. Each chapter begins with "Senior View," which introduces students to a real person and gives them a chance to hear what older adults think and say about important issues related to the chapter and a chance to compare those opinions to the research findings. "Chapter Projects" offer the opportunity for active learning, as students investigate for themselves an issue related to the chapter. Instructors can expand these projects for students who want to learn more, or for independent study. Download or read book Climb Every Mountain written by Trudy Cathy White and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If God had intended our days on earth to be easy, they would be. Instead, Jesus promised us quite the opposite. He said, “In this world, you willhave trouble.” He was right. We will have heartache. We will have sickness. We will have job loss, lost love, grief, and frustration. We will have times when all seems lost. Fortunately, that’s not the whole story. “But take heart!” Jesus says. “I have overcome the world.” In Climb Every Mountain, Trudy Cathy White invites you to join her on an expedition toward, up, and over the mountains most of us face in life—challenges such as figuring out our identity in Christ, understanding the gifts and calling God’s given us, godly parenting, and leaving (and living) a legacy for others to follow. She’ll also guide you through the rocky terrain of adversity, aging, and grief. With funny, heartwarming, and often-heartbreaking honesty, Trudy will reveal the principles God’s taught her through a lifetime of climbing the most challenging—and beautiful—mountains she ever imagined. God’s called us to join Him on the mountaintop of victory but getting there won’t be easy. We can’t wish, hope, or even pray our way to the top. We have to climb. Climb Every Mountain is the inspiring true story of Trudy Cathy White as she shares her life of climbing hermountains—literal and spiritual. As the daughter of S. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, Trudy learned how to climb mountains from her parents’ examples. Trudy learned that, as we climb every mountain withthe Lord, we move closer and closer to whoHe wants us to be and where He wants us to be. No matter how difficult the climb or how sweet the rewards seem today, the most glorious life we could ever imagine is still to come—just over the next peak.
