Download or read book College Girls Bluestockings Sex Kittens and Co eds Then and Now written by Lynn Peril and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Pink Think takes on a twentieth-century icon: the college girl. A geek who wears glasses? Or a sex kitten in a teddy? This is the dual vision of the college girl, the unique American archetype born when the age-old conflict over educating women was finally laid to rest. College was a place where women found self-esteem, and yet images in popular culture reflected a lingering distrust of the educated woman. Thus such lofty cultural expressions as Sex Kittens Go to College (1960) and a raft of naughty pictorials in men’s magazines. As in Pink Think, Lynn Peril combines women’s history and popular culture—peppered with delightful examples of femoribilia from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1970s—in an intelligent and witty study of the college girl, the first woman to take that socially controversial step toward educational equity.

Download or read book Behold The College Girls written by Mary Ngu and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behold The College Girls is the story of how students in an exclusive girls' mission boarding school interact with one another, on the one hand, and with their principal and staff, on the other. It portrays the power play between senior and junior level students, particularly the obstinate Form 2 students. Other struggles show students taking on the challenge of inadequate meals as well as the prohibition to entertain romantic relations with boys of other colleges within the city. It equally highlights key events like spending a day with boys, and the Vocational Week aimed at recruiting reverend sisters. The story brings to the fore the shared views of four key actors on main occurrences, with one of them featuring in every event, and thanks to whom the setting changes from the college campus to the outside world, particularly the village. In the closing chapter, readers cannot help but sympathise with the key protagonist due to the quandary she is facing- to pursue higher education or not, and if so, where? Thus, Behold The College Girls ends with a suspense. Answers can only be supplied through a sequel.
Download or read book Girls Like Us written by Sheila Weller and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-04-08 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America’s most important musical artists—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon—charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation—female version—but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written—until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel—except it’s all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information. Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them—confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

Download or read book Nollywood written by Jonathan Haynes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English-language branch of the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, has become the third largest in the world. Nollywood films saturate Nigeria and have spread across the African continent, achieving an astonishing extent and depth of cultural influence. They are the most important modern cultural form to come out of Africa. In this book, Jonathan Haynes aims to map out the cultural terrain of Nollywood films much more comprehensively and ambitiously than has been to date. He in effect establishes a canon for Nollywood films. The book is organized around the historical development of Nollywood film culture, which is explored with close attention to the recent history of Nigeria. Throughout the book, genre (defined with reference to common usage in Nigerian film markets) is the principal framework. Thus after establishing a sense of the material and social circumstances out of which Nollywood was born and exploring a few landmark films, Haynes analyzes the durable set of themes and plot types that dominate the industry and reveal deeply embedded tensions in contemporary Nigerian life. These genres include family films and romances, village films, cultural epics, political films, films made in or about the Nigerian diaspora, and campus films. Haynes concludes by offering some remarks on the future of Nollywood, exploring the buzz around a New Nollywood of films with higher budgets fit for international film festivals and widespread screening in cinemas in Nigeria and abroad."
