I have examined the statements of facts contained in this article, and find them unusually accurate, so far as they cover the ground. O. M. Poe, Major of Engineers, and Brevet Brig. Gen'l, U. S. A. Late Chief Engineer, Army of the Ohio. In the following Sketches, I cannot, consistently, make further pretension, than that of picturing my own experiences, which necessarily were largely confined within the limits of my own regiment. That justice may not have been done some equally or more deserving regiments, and that the skeleton of facts, upon which the following incidents are based, may be incomplete through the omission of some detail, there can be little doubt. The desire to preserve the incidents I have hitherto carried in my memory, and to make acknowledgment where justice demanded it, has been my only motive in offering this article to my comrades and those who are interested in the East Tennessee Campaign. I have been greatly aided through the courtesy of Generals A. E. Burnside, O. M. Poe, and F. W. Swift, who have granted me privileges of conversation and free access to data in their possession; and also, to Generals James Longstreet and E. P. Alexander, of the Confederate service, who kindly gave me permission to publish portions of a private correspondence. Extracts have been made, by permission, from "Burnside and the Ninth Army Corps," a very complete work published by "Woodbury," and from an article published in the "Atlantic Monthly," of July, 1865; for which favors I am deeply grateful. This book gives accounts of the events which occurred primarily from October, 1863 - January 1864 in East Tennessee including Campbell's Station, Bean's Station, Mossy Creek, Dandridge and Fair Garden. Reports put the number of Confederate Troops involved at 20,000 and the Union Troops at 12,000. The number of casualties in the battles around Knoxville will never be known. The total Union loss reported was killed 92, wounded 394, captured or missing, 207 = 693. The total Confederate loss (minus the Cavalry, not reported) was 182 killed, 768 wounded, and 192 captured or missing = 1142. The loss in the cavalry is estimated at 250.

Lee called his “Old Warhorse,” had long labored in the shadow of both his army commander and the late Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. When Confederate fortunes took a turn for the worse in Tennessee, both Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee dispatched Longstreet and most of his First Corps to reinforce Braxton Bragg’s ill-starred Army of Tennessee. Within hours of his arrival Longstreet helped win the decisive victory at Chickamauga and drove the Union Army of the Cumberland back into Chattanooga. For a host of reasons, some military and some political, Bragg dispatched Longstreet and his troops to East Tennessee. Waiting for him there was Ambrose Burnside, whose early-war success melted away with his disastrous loss at Fredericksburg in late 1862 at the head of the Army of the Potomac, followed by the humiliation of “The Mud March.” Burnside was shuffled to the backwater theater of East Tennessee. Bragg’s investment in Chattanooga and subsequent arrival of Longstreet opened the door to Tennessee’s Union-leaning eastern counties and imperiled Burnside’s isolated force around Knoxville, the region’s most important city. A heavy Confederate presence threatened political turmoil for Federal forces and could cut off Burnside’s ability to reinforce Chattanooga. Longstreet finally had the opportunity to display his tactical and operational skills. The two old foes from the Virginia theater found themselves transplanted to unfamiliar ground The fate of East Tennessee, Chattanooga, and the reputations of the respective commanders, hung in the balance.
