Book The Civil War by Campaigns Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Civil War by Campaigns Classic Reprint written by Eli Greenawalt Foster and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War by Campaigns Many good histories of the Civil War have been written. Nearly all of them devote much space to the details of battles and campaigns, - a most, excellent thing for those who wish to devote their time to a comprehensive study of the, war. The following chapters have been prepared for those who wish a more condensed account of the important events. The facts have been diligently collected from leading standard works, and are presented in a new form. Instead of treating the subject chronologically, as works generally do, the author has written entirely by campaigns. The movements of one army have been fully treated before the discussion of another has commenced. It is hoped that this method of treatment will be found both interesting and profitable. Indeed, this method of presentation of the subject to young men and young women in the school-room has resulted in awakening increased interest in the study of the great war, and has been the means of preventing many confusions that would otherwise occur; and it has made the time spent in the study of the war more fruitful in result. The military campaign maps tracing the movements of the armies are entirely original, and have been prepared expressly for this volume. A careful study of the maps "Grant's Campaign in the West," "Campaigns of Buell and Bragg," "Sherman's March to the Sea," and the "Army of the Potomac," will aid greatly in giving a clear and definite idea of the great theaters of the Civil War. The maps locating the battles and sieges have been copied from larger works. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaigns of the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861 1865 Most historians of the war recite the events chronologically, that is breaking from the campaigns of one section to describe those of another. We, however, have departed from this order, believing that a continuous account of each section will impress on the memories of the readers a clearer and more comprehensive conception of these intricate affairs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Campaigns of the Civil War the Army Under Pope It is not, to my thinking, a creditable thing to the country that the official reports of the war have not long since been published. The want of them is sensibly felt by every one who endeavors to investigate any campaign. These reports, both Federal and Confederate, are, however, now being published under the authority of Government. Book Battles of the Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Battles of the Civil War Classic Reprint written by Thomas Elbert Vineyard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battles of the Civil War In all history of this American Republic, or perhaps any other nation, there was no conflict that was so terrible as our Civil war. Napo leon's efforts to bring into reality his dream of universal empire would not compare with it. I have endeavored in this book to describe in detail the chief points that were enacted on the most important battlefields of that War. As those who participated in that War are now fast passing away, and the time will soon be here when they will only be remembered by their deeds of valor on these battlefields, I deem it only fit and proper that those in all walks of life should know more of these battles in detail and of those who participated in them. I think you will get this information from this book, as it is written specially with this view. It should specially appeal to teachers and students who can use it in a supplementary way in connection with the study of history of this period. I now commend this book to you, and trust that it may be the means of giving you more light on this the greatest civil war Of all time, and that it may help to lengthen in the minds of the American people their remembrance of those who participated in it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Contest: A History of Military and Naval Operations During the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861-1865 The histories that have been given to the public are in two, three, four, or more volumes, and are expensive; and the military and naval operations narrated in them are so interlaced with civil and polit ical history that it becomes tedious to the reader to follow the thread of the story. Every family that is able Should have such a history as greeley, lossing, draper, DE paris, or badeau has written. They are certam valuable; and to those who possess either, it is believed that this work will prove an excellent auxiliary. To the majority of people, however, simply the facts connected with the military and naval movements are of special interest, or what was going on at the front; and for this class this book is more particularly written. Two years of hard labor and thorough search have been spent upon this work in the endeavor to make it as nearly correct as possible; yet errors will no doubt appear, perhaps many of them. Dates of battles are easily obtained, but it is not always easy to ascertain the exact number engaged upon each side, or the exact losses in battle. In this work, in most instances, approximate round numbers are given. The arrangement of this volume originated with a desire to enable the -reader to follow each army, or the operations in any one section. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign and Battles of Gettysburg Stately palaces now line the avenues so lately filled with charred and smoking ruins. The fields around us smile in cultivated beauty where lately trod the iron hoof of war fetlock deep in blood. The lordly river, no longer grim with batteries on its banks, and iron-clads upon its surface, nor choked with obstructions in its channel, rolls its majes tic tides in unbroken currents to the sea. And save here and there, where some rude earthwork, overgrown with grass and weeds, scars the landscape, fair nature tells no tale of the devastation of civil strife. Book History of Grant s Campaign for the Capture of Richmond 1864 1865

This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Grant's Campaign for the Capture of Richmond (1864-1865): With an Outline of the Previous Course of the American Civil War IN the following pages I have sought to give an accurate, clear, and impartial narrative of the campaign which brought to an end the American Civil War, by subduing Richmond, and the great general and brave army defending it; thereby crushing the rebellion, preserving the Union of the States, and accomplishing the abolition of slavery. To explain the state of affairs when General Grant, placed at the head of the whole army of the United States, began the final advance on Richmond, two or three introductory chapters seemed necessary. These I have endeavoured so to write that the reader, if he has not already consulted any history of the war, may yet com prehend the outline of its course during the years 1861, 1862, and 1863. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Campaigns of 1862 and 1863: Illustrating the Principles of Strategy The discussion of events recently passed and fresh in everybody's memory, is a difficult task, as impressions of all kinds are still alive, and passions on the subject are not entirely subdued. It is therefore necessary, before entering on the discussion of the past campaign, to establish a sound basis, or rather to give the reader a correct idea of what in war is to be considered right and what wrong. For this, sound knowledge and thorough understanding of the great maxims of the art, and a familiar acquaintance with the great geographical features of the theater of the contest, are absolutely indispensable. We will, consequently, devote a few chapters to the principles of strategy, as ap plied to great wars of invasion; and we will consider the geography of the Southern Confederacy, in so far as it has an influence on military Operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outbreak of Rebellion Upon urgent and repeated request from the publishers, the author consented to lay aside temporarily a larger and more important literary task, to write for them this initial volume of the Campaigns of the Civil War. Personal observation and long previous investigation had furnished him a great variety of new material for the work; and this was opportunely supplemented by the recent publication of the Oficial War Records for 1861, both Union and Confed erate, opening to comparison and use an immense mass of historical data, and furnishing the definite means of verify ing or correcting the statements of previous writers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign in Virginia: May and June, 1864 I have been in this case an editor rather than author. I have frequently had reason to express my obligations to British publishers; to them I must now add their American colleagues in the service of knowledge. Wisdom is justified of her children, and the worship of Minerva is incompatible with base jealousies and narrow-minded self-conceit. But the career. Of Politics is a very different kind of service, and as in regard to the Wars of 1866 and 1870 - 1 in Europe, so in regard to the Civil War in America, I86I - 1865, not one prophecy, not one scheme, not one criticism of party politicians - American, British, or French - was justified by events. But hard-working and well-informed literary men and responsible soldiers were right in all three cases, both as to prognostication before the combatants opened. Fire and as to the methods on which success depended during the war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
