Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Grant and His Campaigns IT is fitting that the American people should know more of General Grant than is usually found in the ordinary histories of the times of his early days; of his training and characteristics, as he is another example of the man, ner in which our men Who have made their mark have risen to eminence from the ranks of the upright and well-to-do classes among the people. The aim, there fore, of the present volume is to give a sketch of his boy hood, including the preparation for the work in life that fell to his lot, by means of his education and training at West Point his services in the Mexican War, and, afterward, his experience as a subordinate officer on duty in Oregon and California. Then we see him resigning from the army and entering upon the life of a farmer he was honest, truthful, indefatigable, always at work, but he did not possess the knack of making money, says one who knew him well. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign Lives of Ulysses S. Grant, and Schuyler Colfax Before he was forty-three years of age he had participated in two great wars, captured five hundred guns, more than one hun dred thousand prisoners, a quarter of a million of small arms, redeemed from rebel rule over fifty thousand-square miles of territory, re-opened to the commerce of the world the mightiest river on the globe, and stubbornly pursued his path to victory, despite of all obstacles. Since then, he has crushed out the re bellion in the East, reestablished the authority of the Union over a territory larger than France, taken two hundred battle flags, scores of canon, thousands upon thousands of prisoners, and hundreds of thousands of small arms, and then modestly returned to the capital of the nation, to disband his army of a million of men, lay his sword at the feet of the Congress of the people, and wait their pleasure whether he should fill a high station or become an humble private citizen. The world fur nishes few such examples of greatness and humility, and our country only one other - that of George Washington. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Campaigns of General U. S, Grant The personal history of a Nation's benefactor will always interest the people whom he has signally served. General Grant rose from humble life to the highest position of military power, with no effort to attain it beyond unassuming and unwearied devotion to the Republic, during the period of its greatest peril and trial. Of such a man, the humblest citizen desires to know every detail of his career from his boyhood to his later and more eventful years. In this volume it has been the endeavor of the author to gratify that natural curiosity, by giving well-authenticated incidents of his life. For much information the author is indebted to family friends of General Grant; for others, to the writings of Carleton, Richardson, Nichols, and other historians of the war. It is believed, that what is written is historically correct; indeed, there is no better test than the able and succinct reports of the great captains, - Grant, Sherman, Meade, and Sheridan, - which are included in this volume. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of how one of America’s greatest military heroes became a literary legend. The former general in chief of the Union armies during the Civil War . . . the two-term president of the United States . . . the beloved ambassador of American goodwill around the globe . . . the respected New York financier—Ulysses S. Grant—was dying. The hardscrabble man who regularly smoked twenty cigars a day had developed terminal throat cancer. Thus began Grant’s final battle—a race against his own failing health to complete his personal memoirs in an attempt to secure his family’s financial security. But the project evolved into something far more: an effort to secure the very meaning of the Civil War itself and how it would be remembered. In this maelstrom of woe, Grant refused to surrender. Putting pen to paper, the hero of Appomattox embarked on his final campaign: an effort to write his memoirs before he died. The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant would cement his place as not only one of America’s greatest heroes but also as one of its most sublime literary voices. Authors Chris Mackowski and Kristopher D. White have recounted Grant’s battlefield exploits as historians at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, and Mackowski, as an academic, has studied Grant’s literary career. Their familiarity with the former president as a general and as a writer bring Grant’s Last Battle to life with new insight, told with the engaging prose that has become the hallmark of the Emerging Civil War Series.

Book General Grant and the Verdict of History

Download or read book General Grant and the Verdict of History written by Frank P Varney and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grant's Campaign in Virginia, 1864: The Wilderness Campaign Apart from its own intrinsic value as a tactical study, this campaign has a special significance when it is considered in relation to the three years of indecisive struggle which preceded it. Thus a certain acquaint ance with the course and nature of that struggle is necessary to fully appreciate the lessons of Grant's Campaign in Virginia. Unfortunately, these preceding operations are very lengthy and complex. The campaigns were numerous and spread over a vast area. Their plans, objectives and fortunes were so varied and so constantly changing that it is not possible to give more than the briefest outline here. And in fact, although the study of the first three years of the contest is highly instructive, its value consists chie y in showing how war ought not to be conducted. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Grant's Campaign for the Capture of Richmond (1864-1865): With an Outline of the Previous Course of the American Civil War IN the following pages I have sought to give an accurate, clear, and impartial narrative of the campaign which brought to an end the American Civil War, by subduing Richmond, and the great general and brave army defending it; thereby crushing the rebellion, preserving the Union of the States, and accomplishing the abolition of slavery. To explain the state of affairs when General Grant, placed at the head of the whole army of the United States, began the final advance on Richmond, two or three introductory chapters seemed necessary. These I have endeavoured so to write that the reader, if he has not already consulted any history of the war, may yet com prehend the outline of its course during the years 1861, 1862, and 1863. Book excerpt: A history of the series of American Civil War battles fought at a town outside of Richmond, Virginia. Robert E. Lee feared the day the Union army would return up the James River and invest the Confederate capital of Richmond. In the spring of 1864, Ulysses Grant, looking for a way to weaken Lee, was about to exploit the Confederate commander’s greatest fear and weakness. After two years of futile offensives in Virginia, the Union commander set the stage for a campaign that could decide the war. Grant sent the 38,000-man Army of the James to Bermuda Hundred, to threaten and possibly take Richmond, or at least pin down troops that could reinforce Lee. Jefferson Davis, in desperate need of a capable commander, turned to the Confederacy’s first hero: Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard. Butler’s 1862 occupation of New Orleans had infuriated the South, but no one more than Beauregard, a New Orleans native. This campaign would be personal. In the hot weeks of May 1864, Butler and Beauregard fought a series of skirmishes and battles to decide the fate of Richmond and Lee’s army. Historian Sean Michael Chick analyzes and explains the plans, events, and repercussions of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign in Grant’s Left Hook: The Bermuda Hundred Campaign, May 5-June 7, 1864. The book contains hundreds of photographs, new maps, and a fresh consideration of Grant’s Virginia strategy and the generalship of Butler and Beauregard. The book is also filled with anecdotes and impressions from the rank and file who wore blue and gray. Praise for Grant’s Left Hook “A superb installment . . . one of the best books in the ECW series (easily rating among the top handful in this reviewer’s estimation). Sean Chick’s Grant’s Left Hook is highly recommended reading.” —Civil War Books and Authors “An excellent, very informative book about one of the least understood campaigns of the Civil War . . . also quite readable, and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the great conflict, and particularly for those who like tramping across battlefields.” —The NYMAS Review

Book The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee

Download or read book The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee written by Samuel W. Odell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives and Campaigns of Grant and Lee: A Comparison and Contrast of the Deeds and Characters of the Two Great Leaders in the Civil War; With Introductory Reminiscences Much has been written about both Grant and Lee and the parts that each bore in the bloody strife that so nearly wrecked the Union, but, we believe, there are elements of novelty and interest in taking these two great master-spirits of the war, and, in the same book, analyzing their careers; comparing them step by step, to find what elements of similarity or dissimilarity existed between them, and wherein each succeeded or failed, and, if possible, to determine why. Such, at least, is the aim of the present work. The utmost care has been used to verify all facts and figures from the very highest authorities. No judgment has been passed on any person or event without weighing carefully all the evidence, and with a desire to be entirely fair and impartial. Special pains have been taken to avoid stirring up any spirit of controversy, and to judge each side in the great conflict only as the facts warrant. The publishers fully realize that in a narrative of so intense a struggle as the Civil War, where great bitterness was engendered, not only between the two opponents, but, also, even among some of the rival commanders on the same side, whose interests may have come in conflict, that any opinion that may be expressed about a leader, or his acts, is liable to be dissented from by those who may be his special friends or adherents. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Military Education of Grant as General Fourth, Contrary to the popular conception, victory or defeat is not a sound criterion of good generalship. Both the opposing commanders may be good generals, or both may be poor generals; yet, if the armies fight, one must win and the other lose. Though the leader of one army may be superior to his opponent in generalship, yet the condition of the troops as to discipline or morale, the proportionate number of combatants, or amount of material on each side, or other factors, such as terrain, supplies, transportation, or even the weather, may still determine the issue of the combat or campaign.
