Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the 1745 siege of the Louisbourg fortress on Cape Breton is based on research in the Louisbourg archives. It reviews the reasons for a New England expedition to capture the fortress, the recruitment of a force of essentially unexperienced militia, the state of the French forces and fortifications at Louisbourg, the various stages of the siege, the effects of the attacker's batteries and the French countermeasures, the relations between the various siege commanders, and the eventual surrender of the fortress. The study ends with a discussion of the possible reasons for the outcome. The appendix contains a chronology, a copy of the Massachusetts governor's scheme for attacking Louisbourg, the governor's instructions to the expedition commander, and terms of the surrender of June 1745.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island is a beautiful region with a unique community whose history and ethnic composition have resulted in the evolution of a powerful sense of identity and place. While outsiders may think only of the island's perennial economic woes and long economic dependence on coal mining and steel production, it is also the home of a rich, vibrant, and distinct culture. Brian Douglas Tennyson's Cape Bretoniana is the first bibliography to gather together all known publications relating to the history, culture, economy, and politics of Cape Breton Island. With more than 6000 entries, it not only provides a comprehensive listing of publications and post-graduate theses, but also detailed annotations on the listings. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, volume and issue number in the case of periodicals, and page references, followed by a brief description of the item. Cape Breton has never been so thoroughly documented. This bibliography will help to ensure that ? even in a world becoming increasingly homogenized by the forces of globalization ? unique cultural identities like Cape Breton's can be preserved and nurtured.

Book The Struggle for North America 1754 1758

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE BEST FIRST BOOK CATEGORY OF THE TEMPLER MEDAL 2016 At the end of 1758, Britons could proudly boast of the numerous victories which had been achieved against the forces of King Louis XV. Although the Seven Years' War, or French and Indian War, was far from over, 1758 marked a significant turning point. Uniquely, this book provides an insight into the initial stages of the Seven Years War, and explains why Britain failed, despite the many advantages which it enjoyed. George Yagi employs an immense amount of varied primary material in order to provide the most thorough analysis yet of British failure during the early stages of the Seven Years' War. In doing so, it aims to dispel commonly held misconceptions and prove that the reasons for failure are much more complicated than has been assumed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The July 1995 proceedings feature 64 papers presented by cereal chemists, geneticists, physiologists, and researchers working with pre-harvest germination, sprouting damage, and dormancy in order to help growers succeed in harvesting their crops before rain or fog induces pre-harvest sprouting and lowers the commercial value of their crops. The 1995 program develops more molecular approaches to sprouting problems than in previous years, and highlights international developments in gene location, plant processes at a molecular level, and new technologies to develop more efficient diagnostic and screening tests. Book Life and Religion at Louisbourg 1713 1758

Download or read book Life and Religion at Louisbourg 1713 1758 written by A. Johnston and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996-06-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.J.B. Johnston establishes the secular and religious contexts of life at Louisbourg and traces the mixed fortunes of three religious groups: the Récollets of Brittany, who acted as parish priests and chaplains; the Brothers of Charity of Saint John of God, who operated the King's Hospital; and the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, who ran the local school for girls. Drawing on the extensive material in the Archives of the Fortress of Louisbourg, Johnston notes the groups' remarkable persistence in the face of personnel shortages, financial burdens, and conflicts with secular authorities and rival religious bodies. Not the least of their problems was the profound parsimony of the Louisbourgeois who declined to build a parish church or pay a compulsory tithe. Yet despite this independent stance, the author demonstrates, religion was at the centre of family and community life. Life and Religion at Louisbourg contributes substantially to the social as well as the religious history of New France.

Excerpt: ... afterthoughts And now comes the strangest part of the story. We get quite accustomed to thinking of the American colonies as the football of European diplomacy, our reading of history has fully prepared us for that: but we are not prepared to find events in the New World actually shaping the course of those in the Old. In a word, England lost the battle in Europe, -but won it in America. France was confounded at seeing the key to Canada in the hands of the enemy she had just beaten. England and France were like two duellists who have had a scuffle, in the course of which they have exchanged weapons. Instead of dictating terms, France had to compromise matters. For the sake of preserving her colonial possessions, she now had to give up her dearbought conquests on the continent of Europe. Hostilities were suspended. All the belligerents I agreed to restore what they had taken from each other, and cry quits; but it is plain that France would never have consented to such a settlement at a time when her adversaries were so badly crippled, when all England was in a ferment, and she hurrying back her troops from Holland in order to put down rebellion at home, thus leaving the coalition of which she was the head to stand or fall without her. France would not have stayed her victorious march, we think, under such circumstances as these, unless the nation's attention had been forcibly recalled to the gravity of the situation in America. In some respects this episode of history recalls the story of the mailed giant, armed to the teeth, and of the stripling with his sling. As all the conquests of this war were restored by the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, Cape Breton went to France again. Thus had New England made herself felt across the Atlantic by an...
