Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Masterfully written . . . This series provides the enthusiast and historian with volumes in which history is combined with tourism on the battlefields.” —On the Old Barbed Wire In 1870 France embarked on a war with Prussia and her allied German states that was to be a complete disaster. For Napoleon III, after his ignominious surrender with thousands of his troops from the Army of the Rhine and the Army of Châlons, it meant his abdication and exile. For France it resulted in the humiliation of her army, a bitter civil war in Paris, the loss of two Provinces (Alsace and Lorraine) and a heavy indemnity. Maarten Otte provides background chapters to place the lead up to the war and the issues that were involved; he describes the makeup of the opposing armies and some of their principal commanders. The Sedan Campaign was fought over a relatively small area and the locations of some of the key battles have changed little, though some of those near the built-up areas, such as Sedan itself, require some imagination. After the war several German regiments erected monuments and a surprising number remain today, often hidden away in isolated fields and copses. Several communal cemeteries have a number of German graves. Perhaps one of the most macabre of these is the ossuary in Bazeilles, where the visitor is able to see skeletons that still have shreds of uniform and footwear on them. Sedan was also a focus of the most recent and bloody western European wars, and a notable feature of this battlefield is to see memorials to the conflicts of the twentieth century—the Great War and the Second World War.

Book 1870 SAARBRUCK TO PARIS A Strategical Sketch The Special Campaign Series

This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the acclaimed "Special Campaign" series of works intended for serious professional students of military history each volume is interspersed with strategical and tactical comments and illustrated by numerous sketches. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 marked a critical point in European history. The French goaded the Germans into action, provoking war.The Germans had been preparing for the conflict for some years and sprung into action, and the ensuing action would be a debacle for the French and a victory for the Germans. On 16 July 1870, the French parliament voted to declare war on Prussia and hostilities began three days later when French forces invaded German territory. The German coalition mobilised its troops much more quickly than the French and rapidly invaded north-eastern France. The German forces were superior in numbers, had better training and leadership and made more effective use of modern technology, particularly railroads and artillery. A series of swift Prussian and German victories in eastern France, culminating in the Siege of Metz and the Battle of Sedan, saw French Emperor Napoleon III captured and the army of the Second Empire decisively defeated. Excerpt: ... army, the credit of the success of the day, Count Bismarck is reported to have claimed some credit for effecting the unity of so many of the German races, who had that day made common cause, and fought side by side against the enemy in defence of the fatherland. The Germans celebrated this great victory by impromptu candle illuminations and the singing of the usual patriotic airs, but their leaders, discussing the chances of the future, felt that there might yet be DEMORALIZATION OF THE FRENCH ARMY. 59 many a hard day's fighting before peace would be declared. The situation of the French at the conclusion of the day, and while the bearer of the flag of truce was proceeding to the German Head-Quarters, is shown in the 2nd position on the large sketch; the town was entirely surrounded by the Germans, whose well-served guns, carrying with murderous effect over 4,900 metres, planted on all the surrounding heights, dominated the place, and could have shelled it so that hardly a house would have been left standing; while the defeated French soldiers, crushed into the narrow streets with no longer any organization, were perfectly demoralized, and exasperated by their bloody but useless struggles, were ripe for mischief and much more dangerous to friend than foe. The scene in the town was, I have heard from several of the inhabitants, of the most harrowing description: dead horses and men encumbered the ground; and horses, limbers, guns, caissons, and baggage-waggons all pell-mell, broke the surging mass of soldiers, who wandered about indiscriminately, drunk and cursing their leaders and officers, whom they threatened to assassinate. Under such circumstances what course remained open to the Emperor and his advisers but that which His Majesty...
