Book excerpt: Walter Chauncey Camp (1859-1925) was known as "The Father of American Football". Replying to a question, "What is your hobby today", in a questionnaire from The Select Features Company (presumably around 1890), Walter Camp answered, "Athletics and physical fitness," and it is interesting that his correspondence deal principally with these two general subjects. Camp was a prolific letter writer who corresponded with Yale football stars, football coaches throughout the United States, authors, publishers, and prominent political U.S. political figures. Another question in the questionnaire referred to above was, "What was your ambition when you were a boy?" Camp replied, "To write." It would appear that this ambition was realized during his lifetime. Approximately one-half of Camp's writings are concerned with football, its history, reviews of the seasons, All-America teams and rules. Camp's writings on other sports include rugby, baseball, track, golf, rowing and tennis, and a few articles on women in sports and athletics in general. In addition to extensive correspondence, the collection includes newspaper and magazine clippings which Walter Camp collected from the local press and from subscription clipping services across the country, photographs, and family papers.
