Penrose became a local ranching leader through his raising of purebred Holsteins and exotic sheep at Turkey Creek Ranch. He also kept wild animals, some of which became the basis for his Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Using the services of local high-style architects MacLaren and Thomas, Penrose built an impressive Spanish Revival style residence and numerous outbuildings at the Ranch in 1912-1913. Improvements continued at the Ranch until Penrose's death in 1939. The Turkey Creek Ranch district, which has been determined eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, consists of 8 historically significant buildings and 13 other buildings or structures.

Book World War II at Camp Hale Blazing a New Trail in the Rockies

Download or read book World War II at Camp Hale Blazing a New Trail in the Rockies written by David R. Witte and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1942, a little over two years before the Tenth Mountain Division officially obtained its name, the U.S. Army began the unprecedented construction of a training facility for its newly acquired ski and mountain troops. Located near Pando in Colorado's Sawatch Range, the site eventually known as Camp Hale sits at an elevation of 9,250 feet. Immense challenges in its creation and subsequent training included ongoing racial conflict, the high altitude and blustery winters. However, thanks to contributions from civilian workers and the Women's Army Corps and support from neighboring communities, the camp trained soldiers who helped defeat the Axis powers in World War II. Veteran David R. Witte brings to life this enduring story.

Book excerpt: The 49th Engineer Combat Battalion is called the "Ghost Battalion" because so little is known about this fascinating unit in WWII and its contributions to history. The 49th landed on Utah Beach on D-day, clearing beach obstacles, mines, taking and holding key points, building bridges and rescuing Airborne soldiers trapped behind enemy lines. Follow this unit through major campaigns and battles including Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Huertgen Forest, Cherbourg, Cologne Plain and Ruhr Pocket. This is a true historical rendering of their story taken from actual unit journals, battle casualty reports, photos and maps.
